NABF Convention, Day 2

The opening general session of the 50th NABF convention got underway Friday morning in Reno, Nevada. After the national anthems of member countries Canada, Mexico and the United States were played, NABF VP Joanna Aguilar introduced NSAC commissioner Staci Alonso. Comm. Alonso welcomed the NABF to Reno and reflected on the 50 years that the organization has been in existence. Alonso compared the need to work even harder at maintaining one’s health the older they get, to the need for an organization to also not rest on its laurels and continue to strive for excellence.
Nabf2018daytwo09
Former president Duane Ford then introduced a video from WBC president and NABF VP Mauricio Sulaiman. Sulaiman underwent emergency surgery a few weeks back and is unable to travel at this time. He wished the NABF family well and a successful convention. Continue reading “NABF Convention, Day 2”

Tevin Farmer: I’m ready to fight anyone

Tevin “The American Idol” Farmer (26-4-1, 5 KOs), of Philadelphia, PA, won the IBF Junior Lightweight World Title today via 12-round unanimous decision against Australian Billy Dib (43-5, 24 KOs), at Technology Park, in Eveleigh, a suburb of Sydney, Australia.

Tevin Farmer: “Billy Dib is a hell of a fighter, he had a great career, and he’s a two-time world champion. He tried to bully me and that might have worked if I wasn’t from Philly. I’m the new champion of the world. It was a long time to get here, but there’s a long way to go. Nobody wanted to give me a shot, everybody was ducking me so I had to kick the door in. Now I’ve got the belt and everybody will want to start screaming my name. I’m ready to fight anyone and unify the titles.”

Promoter Lou DiBella: “I’ve never had a champion like Tevin Farmer. At 7-4-1, with all the odds against him, he decided he’d be a world champion. He went from 7-4-1 to 26-4-1, now with an IBF strap around his waist. Despite being shot through the hand protecting family and getting robbed in his last fight, he never stopped smiling and always believed in himself. Tevin is Philly to the core.”

Kovalev-Alvarez face off

By Przemek Garczarczyk

Sergey Kovalev: (commenting on his “two crazy losses”) “It was a kick from life to awaken me and put my mind on the right trail. I lost my mind when I started to get famous. And I also didn’t have a coach in my training camp. I now have coaches in my training camps. (Before) all of my training camps were done myself and, of course, some training camps were good, and some were not. There were some mistakes, of course, there are always mistakes, and of course, my performances were some a little good, and some not. Right now, with my coach working with me for the fight, Abror Tursunpulatov, I feel much more professional, because we’ve delivered and went through mistakes. I hope this Saturday, I will show my best skills and what I came to do.”

Eleider Alvarez: “With my trainer, I had one of the best, hardest trainings in the world. It’s made me in the best shape I’ve ever been right now. Having this opportunity to go up against a fighter with one of the greatest reputations of any contender I could think of, Sergey Kovalev, it’s an incredible opportunity. I’m very full of pride and joy to let the world know who Eleider Alvarez is. It’s time.” Continue reading “Kovalev-Alvarez face off”

NABF 50th convention- Day 1 report

By Boxing Bob Newman

The 50th annual NABF convention got underway this afternoon at the Silver Legacy Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada. With convention delegates arriving throughout the day, the schedule was light with registration all day, followed by the ratings meeting and a closed board of directors meeting. The night capped off with the federation’s customary “personality improvement” cocktail gathering at the Rum Bullion’s Patio.
Nabf2018reno2
Ratings chairman Tommy Ashy presided over the ratings meeting with several interested parties in attendance. While changes are always par for the course as all ratings are fluid, some key changes were noted:

Former WBC light heavy champ Jean Pascal came out of retirement to win a fight at cruiserweight, hence his new ranking at #4 in that division.

Recent WBO super feather title challenger Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz has dropped down to featherweight and is ranked #5. Continue reading “NABF 50th convention- Day 1 report”

European Boxing Update

By Marco Bratusch

Boxing Club Hyerois, from France, won the purse bid last Tuesday at EBU headquarters, to earn the rights to stage the European junior featherweight bout between Abigail “Bebé” Medina (19-3-2, 10 KOs), the current champion, anche Jeremy Parodi (42-4-1, 10 KOs), the challenger, in a awaited rematch of their first clash dated two years ago. The French club put in the envelope 21,000 Euros as the only bidder to participate and aims to promote the bout on October 24 in his operating area of Hyerois, France. This will be the third defense for Medina, a slender, fast-handed boxer who was born in the Dominican Republic but then grew up in Barcelona, Spain. On the other hand, this bout will represent for Parodi the fourth effort to win the European belt, as he fell short in the previous three occasions, although every time against solid opponents. Adamek likes chances vs. Big Baby

“I could fight Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller (21-0, 18 KO) in Chicago – why not? Fans would not be disappointed because I like to do some hit and dance in the ring and Jarrell is a true old school heavyweight, who is not afraid to mix it up. Great fight to watch,” says former light heavyweight/cruiserweight champion and heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (53-5, 31 KO). Adamek has won his last three fights and looked better than he was in years in his last one in dismantling Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell.

When Jarrell Miller’s fight was announced by DAZN for October 6 in Chicago, various reports – and Big Baby in many interviews – linked himself with another Polish heavyweight, Artur Szpilka. Since then, we already know that “The Pin” decided to fight again Poland (most likely against Mariusz Wach on November 10), and Adamek who is preparing for possible return in autumn, became a hot topic of conversation for next possible bouts. “Góral”, currently ranked higher than Szpilka, has no problem to be part of Chicago show.
