A boxing milestone bout took place last Saturday at a club show in Allard Way, Coventry, England, as British journeyman super lightweight Kristian Laight took part in his 300th pro bout. Laight has a less than stellar record of 12-279-9 with 0 KOs to date. He is currently riding a 53-bout winless streak. His 300th fight matched the output of now-retired fellow Brit Peter Buckley who retired in 2008. The 38-year-old Laight aims to break Buckley’s bout total in short order with 300 career losses a distinct possibility.
American super middleweight Reggie Strickland, who retired in 2005, had 363 bouts with a record of 66-276-17, 14 KOs.
It is believed that British lightweight Len Wickwar had the most fights of any pro boxer, competing in 470 bouts between 1928 and 1947. His record was 340-87-42, 93 KOs and one no-contest.

Unbeaten two-division world champ Kosei Tanaka (11-0, 7 KOs), the enfant terrible in Japan, will make a mandatory shot at the World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight belt against compatriot Sho Kimura (17-1-2, 10 KOs) in Nagoya, Japan, on September 24. It was announced by his promoter/manager Kiyoshi Hatanaka, ex-WBC 122-pound titlist, on Tuesday. Kimura, fresh from his second defense over Froilan Saludar via sixth round knockout in China last Friday, didn’t appear in the press conference, but will make his own in Tokyo later.
Should Tanaka win the third world belt in his twelfth bout, it will tie the record of Vasyl Lomachenko. But Hi-Tech suffered the one and only setback to Orlando Salido in his second pro outing, while Tanaka may achieve the establishment with an unblemished mark. Philadelphian Tevin Farmer, 25-4-1, 5 KOs, 1 NC, has a chance to get it right this week when he faces Billy Dib, 43-4, 24 KOs, in a fight in Australia for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) world junior lightweight championship. This will be Farmer’s second attempt at winning a world title after letting his first opportunity slip through his hands, thanks to a long layoff, bad scoring, two injuries, an opponent on performance enhancers, and his own entitled attitude that hampered his ability to get the job done last December.
That concoction of factors conspired to keep Farmer down among the pack of ordinary boxers, but on Saturday, he gets another chance to rise above the rest of the 130-pounders, and above all receive a rare second opportunity to prove what he is all about. However this time, he has to get it right. The bout with Dib comes on Friday, August 3. Continue reading “Farmer needs to get it right this time”
