Nieves scores KO in Columbus, Ohio

By Brad Snyder-The Undercard
Photos by Bob Ryder

Bantamweight Antonio Nieves (18-2-2, 10 KOs) made a statement early, as he coasted to a KO victory at :56 of the fourth round over Christian Esquivel (30-15-1, 23 KOs). Nieves, at 31 years of age, once challenged for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) jr bantamweight title.
Nieves3a
The road to relevance stopped at Hollywood Casino under the stars in Columbus, Ohio. Esquivel, who was overmatched right out of the gates, could only find a moral victory in going four, as Nieves exploded on him from round one. It was a left to the body and a shot to the head that finished off Esquivel. The scheduled eight-rounder was probably meant to keep Nieves working. His speed still looks like championship challenger material. Nieves looks like a contender. Saturday night was another step in the right direction. In a unification bout for the lightweight titles of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing Federation (IBF), Mikey Garcia (40-0, 30 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Robert Easter (21-1, 14 KOs) on Saturday night at Staples Center, Los Angeles, California.
Mikey Garcia Vs Robert Easter Jr
Garcia knocked down Easter in the third round with a beautifully placed right cross, left hook combo. Easter, to his credit, recovered and did his best to box Garcia from the outside but was unable to hurt Garcia with what was mainly his jab. The ninth round was the best of the fight with the two engaging in toe to toe action. That would be Easter’s last hurrah as it seemed to take its toll on him and he went into survival mode for the remainder of the fight.

Judges scored it 116-111, 117-110 and 118-109 all in favor of the now unified lightweight champion, Garcia. Continue reading “Garcia beats Easter, unifies WBC, IBF lightweight titles”

Ortiz easily won the opening round and hurt the much bigger Cojanu with a body shot. Cojanu twice attempted to get up but fell each time and when he did manage to get up, it was on unsteady legs, and seemingly concussed, prompting the referee to stop the fight.
