“I knew that he was looking for the jab. So my team wanted me to show other tools in my arsenal. My dad wanted me to throw the hook more. But I feel that the right hand was what won me the fight tonight,” said undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney after defeating George Kambosos Jr. on Sunday in Melbourne, Australia.

“When he first came out, I didn’t expect him to be switching. But I caught on to his timing and his angles, and I started to pick my shots more. Against a southpaw, the right hand is always on the money. That’s what happened.”

“He’s a warrior. I take my hat off to George Kambosos and all the Australian fans that came out. Thank you guys for giving me so much hospitality here.

“I should definitely be on the pound-for-pound rankings. Continue reading “Haney: I believe I’m the best fighter in the world”

Former heavyweight champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder explained his successful plan leading to his first round knockout of Robert Helenius. “I had to take my time,” said Wilder in the ring. “I had to circle around the ring. I had to be mobile, hostile, and agile tonight. I set him up, allowed him to reach, and then I attacked. So it was a great fight.

“Who’s next? …I’ve been hearing rumors about Usyk. I see he isn’t in the building, or is he? Most of the time when guys say they want me and they come to a show of mine, they see a devastating knockout, and then they turn the corner on me. I’ve had many. I’m down for Andy Ruiz, or Usyk, or whoever.

“Deontay Wilder is back…the excitement in the heavyweight division is back…there’s no heavyweight division without Deontay Wilder. That’s a fact!”

WBC/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Claressa “GWOAT” Shields (13-0, 2 KOs) once again became the undisputed 160lb champion with a ten round unanimous decision over WBO titleholder Savannah “The Silent Assassin” Marshall (12-1, 10 KOs) on Saturday night in a grudge match at the O2 Arena in London. Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, fired quick flurries that kept power-punching Marshall off-balance early on. Marshall upped the pressure and often bullied Shields into the ropes as the bout progressed. Scores were 96-94, 97-93, 97-93.

“I bit down in every round,” Shields said. “In every round, it felt like she would hit me with a big shot, and I would hit her with a big shot. If she hit me to the body, I’d punch her to the body. But I know that I did the most work today and that I was winning with my inside combinations.”

Marshall handed Shields an amateur defeat in 2012, the only time Shields has been toppled as a pro or amateur, but she couldn’t repeat the feat tonight in her own backyard.
