Japan’s 122-pound champ, Gakuya Furuhashi (28-8-2, 16 KOs), 122, barely kept his national belt as he was held to a majority draw (95-95 twice, 96-94 against him) with former titlist Yusaku Kuga (20-5-2, 13 KOs), 122, over ten hard-fought rounds on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan.

It was a grudge fight since Furuhashi, 34, a game brawler, withstood the then champ Kuga’s assault and finally dethroned him via ninth-round come-from-behind stoppage just a year ago. The muscular ex-champ Kuga, 31, had an upper hand with more accurate attacks in the first half, leading on the open scoring system—49-46, 48-47 twice. Furuhashi, however, turned loose to accelerate his retaliation in the second half to overcome his early deficits on points. Kuga, a prefight favorite, almost regained the belt, but failed to recollect it from the pugnacious champ. Continue reading “Furuhashi barely keeps Japanese 122lb belt”

By Joe Koizumi

Newly crowned WBC 108-pound champion Masamichi Yabuki (13-3, 12 KOs), 29, will face former titlist Kenshiro Teraji (18-1, 10 KOs), 30, in his initial defense in Kyoto, Japan, on March 19. Yabuki dethroned Teraji by an upset tenth-round TKO victory last September, and it will be his direct rematch with the ex-champ. Teraji (the outboxer) party claimed that Yabuki (the aggressive puncher) committed an intentional headbutt in round nine, which eventually resulted in an unexpected forfeiture of the previously undefeated Teraji. Did Sugar Ray Robinson claim Carmen Basilio’s intentional butt after their first encounter in 1957? As the WBC ordered, their rematch may solve all disputes between the still hostile parties. Time will tell.

WBA gives 90 days for Akhmadaliev-Rios fight

The World Boxing Association (WBA) gave a deadline of 90 days, until next April 24, to carry out the mandatory bout between WBA super bantamweight super champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev and his mandatory challenger Ronny Rios. Matchroom Boxing won the right to promote the fight on May 24, 2021. However, the fight had to be suspended due to Covid-19 and Akhmadaliev received special permission to defend against Jose Velazquez last November.

Once the voluntary defense was completed, the Championships Committee sent the communication form to the company in charge of organizing the fight with the established deadline to promote the confrontation. Akhmadaliev is the 122lb world champion and Rios occupies the first position in the WBA rankings.

WBA orders Davis-Romero clash

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee ordered the lightweight world title fight between champion Gervonta Davis and mandatory challenger Rolando “Rolly” Romero. The formal communication was sent to both teams of both fighters, who will have 30 days, which expires next February 24, to reach an agreement.

Pursuant to WBA rules, the president and the Committee have the right to define a mandatory period at their discretion. In Davis’ case, it was conditioned to a nine (9) month mandatory defense period. As this period has expired, he must face Romero.

The fight had been previously ordered but external issues prevented it from taking place at that time. The Davis-Romero showdown marks another step in the WBA’s title reduction plan.

“You can’t lose with either one of those fights,” Ward told Max Kellerman. “Kambosos is flexing his muscles in this 135-pound division like he just beat Floyd Mayweather, but he will soon understand that if he is successful in his next fight, regardless of who it’s against, there’s a thing called mandatories. Salita Promotions put on a successful night of boxing Saturday night. The card, matched by Lina Kurylyuk and Steve Clemente, featured up-and-coming local boxers, some long-awaited pro debuts and a main event that showcased fighters from Georgia and California.

Middleweight Hugo “The Boss” Centeno Jr. (28-4-1, 15 KOs) headlined the 10-Round main event. Across the ring from him was a well-matched Antonio Todd (13-5, 7 KOs). The fight, which started slowly, had both fighters feeling each other out. The early rounds favored Centeno, as he was able to get in and then out of danger quickly after he threw punches. Centeno landed some nice combinations early in the 2nd Round. In the 3rd Round, Todd was able to land a beautiful right cross that connected, snapping Centeno’s head back. A very even 4th, led to the fight picking up the pace. Todd, all of a sudden, was touching Centeno’s chin often, and with power. The last three rounds, Todd was chasing Centeno and tagging him with his gloves. A fight, which started pretty slowly, ended at a good, fast pace. Ring announcer Pete Trevino had the honor of delivering the judge’s scores. The scores read (97-93-Todd, 95-95-Draw, 96-94-Todd) giving Todd the majority decision win. Magsayo (24-0, 16 KOs) ended the reign of boxing’s longest male world champion Gary Russell Jr. (31-2, 18 KOs), largely benefiting from an injury to Russell’s right shoulder that became discernable in round four. “I knew that he was hurt,” said Magsayo. “I hit him with a good shot. That’s why he got hurt. That was a big advantage for me. He was only using one hand. This was my opportunity to follow through. My coach was telling me to use good combinations and follow through.
