Zepeda-Prograis Venue Named

WBC #1 ranked Jose ‘Chon’ Zepeda (35-2, 27 KOs) and #2 ranked former World Champion Regis ‘Rougarou’ Prograis (27-1, 23 KOs) will battle for the vacant WBC super lightweight world title on November 26 at ‘The War Grounds’, a.k.a. Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA and broadcast live on pay-per-view, it was announced today. Tickets will go on-sale this Friday.

Jose Zepeda: “I’m really excited about this fight finally happening. This is not like other fights. This is the top two in the 140lb. division, fights like this you don’t see in boxing anymore. This is a real fight and the best part is that the fans are aware of this.”

Regis Prograis: “I’ve been waiting for this fight for three years. I was a champion three years ago, and I stayed at 140 so that I can fulfill my goal and be a two-time champion at 140. I’ve been waiting long for this opportunity, and I believe November 26 is when I will unleash my three years of frustration. I could have gone to 147 and got more money, but I always wanted to be a two-time champion. I changed some things around, I got a nutritionist for my last fight. I am very grateful for this opportunity to come again, and I will not let it slip.”

Lopez, Arredondo battle to a draw

Ring Of Hope 132

By Jeff Zimmerman

In the main event at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas, super featherweight Juan Antonio Lopez (17-11-1, 7 KOs) out of Fort Worth battled Henry Arredondo (8-1-1, 4 KOs) from San Antonio to a draw over six rounds at the Night to Fight benefiting the Ring of Hope and the inaugural event for the Texas Boxing Hall of Fame.

Lopez, a southpaw and a longtime local crowd favorite, showed his ring generalship in the early rounds to stay away from the aggressive Arrendondo and picked his spots landing his straight left hand. Over the next few rounds, the fight moved in the pocket and Arredondo found success landing his power shots. Lopez traded blows inside, but Arrendondo’s threw more punches that seemed to have more pop on them. Neither fighter was hurt. Although Arrendondo won five of six rounds on one scorecard, the other two judges saw it three to three as the scores read 57-57 twice and 59-55 for a majority draw. Fundora defeats Ocampo, remains unbeaten

One of boxing’s latest wonders was victorious Saturday night as the 6’6, WBC interim super welterweight champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora (20-0-1, 13 KO’s) of Indio, California won a workmanlike twelve round unanimous decision over Ensenada, Mexico’s Carlos Ocampo (34-2, 22 KO’s) in headlining Showtime Championship Boxing at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Scores were 117-111, 118-110, 119-109.

In typical fashion the much taller Fundora pumped out the jab, but Ocampo threw the chopping right that connected on Fundora. Ocampo connected with a right in the second, but Fundora responded with his right, busting the Mexican’s nose as Ocampo began to bleed. Measuring with the jab in round three, Fundora appeared to be timing as Ocampo charged and attacked to close the round. It was an inside fight in the fourth as Fundora and Ocampo exchanged, neither taking a step back. Continue reading “Fundora defeats Ocampo, remains unbeaten”

The fight got off to a very slow start with the Los Angeles fight fans quick to boo the lack of action in the feeling out first round. Both fighters were content to mostly paw with their jab as they measured each other up. Continue reading “Adames KOs Maciel for WBC interim 160lb belt”

By Miguel Maravilla at ringside

Argentina’s IBF junior bantamweight champion Fernando Martinez (15-0, 8 KO’s) and former world champion Jerwin Ancajas (33-3-2, 22 KO’s) of the Philippines met in a rematch going the distance to kick off the Showtime Championship Boxing telecast on Saturday night at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The two fighters came out swinging, going at each other in the opening round as this fight appeared to begin where it left off the last time. The aggressiveness from the Flipino appeared to get the better of Martinez as he was momentarily staggered in the second from an Ancajas counter but he continued to go at the Ancajas and fight on. Ancajas landed a low blow in the third as Martinez attacked but the referee did not catch it. Staying close and on top, Martinez pressed in the fourth as Ancajas boxed and countered, later in the round a vicious exchange from the two in closing the round. Former world title challenger, Lithuanian welterweight Egidijus Kavaliauskas (23-2-1, 18 KO’s) won a unanimous decision against Mykal Fox (22-3, 5 KO’s) of Washington, D.C. on Saturday night at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Kavaliauskas floored Fox twice in round three. The Mean Machine was the aggressor pressing Fox throughout the fight as Fox basically fought to survive following the knockdowns.

Attacking much of the fight behind a strong jab, the second half of the fight saw Kavaliauskas chase and continue to attack as Fox kept his distance and boxed away using his height and reach to his advantage. It was all Mean Machine as he continued to attack and landing big punches backing Fox, closing to impress the judges in route to the decision. The judges scored the bout 100-88, 99-89, and 98-90 in favor of the Mean Machine.

By Rocky Morales at ringside

In a minor upset, Edward Vasquez (13-1, 3KO) edged a split decision victory over Viktor Slavinskyi (13-2-1, 6KO). The two fighters were very evenly matched but Vazquez seemed to beat Slavinskyi to the punch on many occasions. There were no knockdowns in the bout. Judges score the bout 74-78, 77-75 and 79-73 in favor of Vasquez in the eight round featherweight contest.

20-year-old, 5’9” Gabriela Fundora (9-0, 5KO) put on a boxing clinic to win a clear-cut unanimous decision victory over tough but outmatched Naomi Reyes (9-2, 5KO) in a ten round flyweight bout. There were no knockdowns in the bout and judges scored it 99-91, 98-92 and 99-91, all in favor of Fundora.

Eumir Marcial, Zamboanga City, Phillipines, (3-0, 2KO) was the unanimous decision winner over local fighter, Steven Pichardo (8-3-1, 2KO) from nearby Gardena, California. Marcial was badly cut by an accidental headbutt in the second round and was a bloody mess for the remainder of the six round middleweight bout. Judges scored it unanimously 60-54 in favor of Marcial in what appeared to be a much more evenly contested fight.

In opening bout action from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, hometown fighter Brandon Lynch (12-1-1, 9KO) stopped outclassed his Argentinian opponent Roque Junco (11-13-1, 6KO) by third round stoppage. Fundora, Ocampo Presser Quores

Unbeaten WBC interim super welterweight champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora promised to deliver another memorable night of action at Thursday’s final press conference before he defends his green belt against former title challenger Carlos Ocampo live on Showtime this Saturday from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Sebastian Fundora: “Ocampo might come into this fight to display his boxing skills, or he might come on the inside looking to exchange. I’m confident in my corner and how we prepared and it’s going to show in the ring.”

Carlos Ocampo: “I’m going to lean on my preparation and training. I’m strong just like Sebastian is. I’m going to have to stick to my training and the results will come with that.”

Thursday’s press conference also featured middleweight Juan Macias Montiel, who squares off against Carlos Adames for the WBC interim 160lb title in the co-main event. Adames was not present at the press conference.

Juan Macias Montiel: “I’m only focused on this fight. A rematch with Jermall Charlo is of course what I want, but I can’t get there unless I win spectacularly in this fight. Saturday night is my time to prove myself.”

Opening the Showtime telecast, IBF junior bantamweight champion Fernando Martinez and former world champion Jerwin Ancajas meet in a rematch.

Fernando Martinez: “I’m very motivated for this fight, as much or more than the first time we fought. We’re familiar with each other now, but I’m not taking anything for granted.”

Jerwin Ancajas: “I was not in as good of shape in our last fight. I fought toe-to-toe because my legs were cramping in the fight. Now we’ve prepared for what he does in the ring and we’ll be ready to reclaim our belt….I can’t wait to get in the ring. Winning my title back is all I’ve been thinking about since we first fought. I know I have what it takes and I’m going to prove it on Saturday night.”
