Irish super welterweight prospect ‘King’ Callum Walsh, (7-0, 6 KOs) of Cork, Ireland, scored a fourth round stoppage over veteran Carson Jones (43-16-3, 31 KOs) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Friday night in headlining 360 Promotions Hollywood Fight Night series at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California.

Walsh let his hands go from the opening bell as connected on a shelled-up Jones. Displaying hand speed and flash in round two, Walsh tagged Jones flush to the chin with a combination. In the third round, Walsh continued to box and outland Jones, who continued to shell up on defense. Coming out strong in the fourth, Walsh pressed and backed up Jones, connecting flush as the face of Jones became a bloody mess. Moments later, Walsh dropped Jones. He got up, but Walsh finished him in the final seconds of the fourth as referee Eddie Hernandez had seen enough waving it off at 2:59. With the win, Walsh captures the WBC US Silver welterweight title. Continue reading “Walsh stops Jones in four”

Izmailov edges Foster

Izmailov Foster 3

By Boxing Bob Newman at ringside

In an intriguing light heavyweight matchup, southpaw Charles Foster took on conventional Ali Izmailov in yet another battle of undefeated fighters on the stacked Hall of Fame weekend card at the Turning Stone casino in Verona, New York.
From the outset, it was clear that the 3-inch taller Foster would utilize his jab, often measuring his foe, which drew warnings from referee Charlie Fitch. While Izmailov’s promoter Dimitriy Salita touted his charge as, “The best light heavyweight in the world,” it didn’t appear that Foster was listening.

Olympic Boxing Update

The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended on Wednesday to the IOC Session to withdraw recognition of the International Boxing Association (IBA), in accordance with Rule 3.7 of the Olympic Charter (OC). The IOC EB also recommended to the IOC Session – in the interest of the boxing athletes and the sport of boxing – to maintain boxing on the sports program of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. To discuss the matter and take a decision, the IOC EB and the IOC President have convened an extraordinary IOC Session to be held remotely on June 22. The IBA has been suspended since 2019 and the IOC itself oversaw the 2020 games in Japan.

* * *

IBA President Umar Kremlev said, “From a disreputable organization named AIBA governed by someone from the IOC’s upper echelon, we committed to and executed a change in the toxic and corrupt culture that was allowed to fester under the IOC for far too long. We have made the International Boxing Association new, transparent, clean…for four years, the IBA has not received a single opportunity to present its achievements at an in-person meeting with the IOC, rather than only exchanging letters and emails instead. We accepted the process and the rules, but in the end, we were not assessed fairly. Now, we are left with no chance but to demand a fair assessment from a competent court.”

* * *

The IBA’s rival, World Boxing, applauded the IOC’s decision. “This is a very significant moment as it provides an opportunity for the sport (subject to the decision of the IOC Session on 22 June 23) to move on from the corrosive leadership of IBA which has brought boxing to a place where its status as part of the Olympic program is in doubt. Broner-Hutchinson Final Press Conference

Photo: David Martin / DKP

Four-division former world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner and Bill Hutchinson faced off at the final press conference for Friday’s PPV showdown at the Casino Miami in Miami, Florida.

Adrien Broner: “The real problem is they let Adrien Broner and Don King get together – that’s the real problem. I can tell you right now, I am not looking past this man, but I can tell you this – Adrien Broner will become world champion again. And it will be under Don King. There is bigger things to come, but the first is to take care of Billy.

“Usually when people see Adrien Broner, there is usually something messed up coming behind him. So after I mess (looking at Hutchinson) you up I’m going to hire you because I can always use a good lawyer. Now that I know you’re a fighter, I know you will fight for me, in the courtroom.”

Bill Hutchinson: As previously stated, I am a licensed attorney. However, first and foremost, I am a fighter, and Adrien Broner is going to see that Friday night, and he’s going to have his hands full. So I appreciate the offer for some work after the fight, and we can talk about that after, but make no mistake, I am going to do everything in the ring to take his head clean off his shoulders.

Don King: “Dealing with lawyers is Broner’s forte.”

Navarrete-Valdez is official

Three-division world champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete (37-1, 31 KOs) will defend his WBO junior lightweight world title against former two-division world champion Oscar Valdez (31-1, 23 KOs) in an all-Mexican throwdown on August 12 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. ESPN will televise/

Emanuel Navarrete: “After so much time, this fight will finally take place. Obviously, I am 100 percent motivated because Valdez is still a big threat, and a fight against him could possibly be the start of a new Mexico vs. Mexico rivalry like the one between Barrera and Morales.”

Oscar Valdez: “I’m excited to return to the ring, especially because it’s for a world title against ‘Vaquero’ Navarrete. Being a world champion is something that I always dreamed of. I already did it two times, and this is yet another opportunity. So, I’m excited and prepared both mentally and physically for this new opportunity. And I like that it’s between two Mexicans because it’s a win-win for Mexico. It’s a guaranteed war when there are two Mexicans in the ring.”

Boxval, Boxing With Values

By Mauricio Sulaimán
President of the WBC – Son of José Sulaimán

Boxing is the purest sport and without a doubt, the oldest, since the caveman era when humans fought for rudimentary supremacy.

There is plenty of evidence to the history of boxing in various stages and eras of humanity: Mesopotamia, Rome, Egypt, and Constantinople, to name a few, until the Middle Ages erased the history of this sport and almost everything in humanity for the dark ages lasting centuries.

However, modern boxing evolved, finding its home in England. People would gather to watch two men fight bare-knuckle and without rules, and so it went on for decades. The first attempt to formulate rules was by the Marquess of Queensberry, but it actually took many more years for it to become a properly regulated sport.
