Fight fans are a funny sort. You think that in 2021 we’d have learned our lesson by now. We seldom want to admit it, particularly those of us in the United States, but the sport tends to be very Amerocentric. We focus on those fighters who become household names fighting on televised fight cards in the United States, and disregard our fellow fight fans from overseas when they tell us about some young hotshot prospect or contender who is making waves outside of the bright lights of Las Vegas.

You think that by now we would have learned our lesson.

Just over a week after countless American boxing fans were forced to search YouTube and Google to get educated on who Josh Taylor was and how he emerged as undisputed junior welterweight champion, we are right back to where we started. Continue reading “Exclusive Interview: Tim Tszyu”

He doesn’t know how to use those abilities that he has, he only has one way to fight. (Question) And you believe that fight will end in a knockout? Yes for sure!” Continue reading “Interview: Stephen Fulton Jr.”

Let’s KO discrimination!

By Mauricio Sulaiman
Son of Jose Sulaiman / President of the WBC

Boxing is global, it has no barriers, walls or borders. It is inclusive by nature, it shows diversity in realities, practices, customs and religions. There is no discrimination in boxing, a fighter from the United States is the same and has the exact same rights as one from Nigeria, Japan or Nicaragua.

One of the most important values for the World Boxing Council is and always will be to fight against racial discrimination. When discrimination occurs, it produces abuse of power that culminates in terrible acts of injustice. Continue reading “Let’s KO discrimination!”

Ring legend Floyd Mayweather spoke to the press after his eight round exhibition on Sunday night in Miami.

“The people wanted a show. I could have [got him out of there]. I could have pressed real, real hard and started throwing these crazy combinations, but it was fun…his whole goal wasn’t to come out here and knock me out. His whole goal was to survive. And that was a win for him.”

“When I come and do an exhibition or come out and box to have some fun, I do it because I want to do it, not because I have to do it. Whereas Pacquiao at his age, which is sad, he has to fight. I’m financially set. And I wanna let everybody know this. You’re gonna hear stories, ‘Floyd has to do this.’ No. I’m well off.”

“The best thing about this week was my youngest daughter graduating.”

Free-swinging veteran Japanese, WBO#11 ex-OPBF champ Ryo Akaho (37-2-2, 25 KOs), 123.5, impressively made short work of active policeman Daisuke Sugita (6-2, 3 KOs), 123.25, finishing him for the count at 1:49 of the third round in a scheduled ten on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan.

Having failed to win a world 115-pound belt twice from compatriot Yota Sato (L12) here in 2012 and from Pungluang Sor Singyu (KOby 2) in Thailand in 2015, the hard-punching Akaho thus registered eleven victories in a row and demonstrated his latest surge at the age of thirty four. Decking Sugita with a right shot in round one, Ryo finely connected with a vicious right following a solid combo and had him down for the fatal ten.
