RIP Felix “Tuto” Zabala

Unnamed (30)Fighter.

No word better described the life and legacy of Felix Zabala. Fighter not only defined his struggle for survival in the cutthroat sport of boxing but was the adept term to describe how he dealt with the health obstacles which became his daily opponent the past two decades.

Affectionately known by his nickname “Tuto,” Felix Zabala – husband, father, grandfather, loyal friend and one of the preeminent promoters in boxing history – succumbed to his last battle around his family on May 6, 2021.

Born October 18, 1937 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Tuto always had a love for sports, particularly baseball and basketball. He was a multi-sport athlete during his grade and high school years. Following high school, Tuto played for the intercollegiate basketball team at the University of Havana. Continue reading “RIP Felix “Tuto” Zabala”

More on Mayweather-Paul

Floyd Paul2Report and photo: Zach Hirsch

YouTuber Logan Paul towered over former multi-division world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather at their kick-off press conference on Thursday in Miami.

Paul vowed that he’s “going to beat the greatest fighter of all time,” while Mayweather promised to “knock Logan Paul out.”

The 26-year-old Paul will have at least a 30-pound weight advantage over 44-year-old Mayweather, but Paul’s 0-1 pro record stacks up unfavorably to Floyd’s 50-0 ledger and Hall of Fame credentials.

Unnamed (29)
Photo: Ed Mulholland/Matchroom

The final press conference took place today ahead of the super middleweight unification showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders on Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, live worldwide on DAZN and TV Azteca.

Canelo Alvarez: “I feel really thankful with the response of the people and that boxing is a sport that brings everything back to normal. I’m ready for this fight. He’s a great fighter, he has a lot of ability and he’s a southpaw. I’m not the same fighter I was six or seven years ago, this Saturday I will show that. I’ve been involved in a lot of big fights and this is just another day at the office. I come to win, like I said boxing is my life and I come here to win.”

Billy Joe Saunders: “I don’t think we’ve had somebody come to win for a very long time. We’ve had a lot of people turn up, collect checks and fly out but we haven’t had the heart, soul and IQ that I’ll bring to the ring on Saturday night to win. Boxing Hall of Famer Floyd “Money” Mayweather and YouTuber Logan Paul met face-to-face Thursday at a media event to preview their special exhibition match that headlines a SHOWTIME PPV event on Sunday, June 6 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. After the press event, a scuffle between the two camps ensued following an incident between Logan’s brother, Jake Paul and Mayweather after Jake grabbed Floyd’s baseball cap.

“It’s one thing to sell a fight, and people can say what they want, but one thing no one is going to do is disrespect me,” said Mayweather.

“Floyd came out of retirement, just to get re-retired,” said Paul.

The pay-per-view will also include WBA light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal and two-division world champion Badou Jack in a 12-round rematch, plus former unified super welterweight champion “Swift” Jarrett Hurd against Luis Arias in a 10-round bout. Former NFL star wide receiver Chad Johnson will be making his boxing debut against TBA.

Saunders: This fight is all about the brain

Billy Joe Saunders
Photo: Ed Mulholland/Matchroom

Billy Joe Saunders says he has the boxing brain to dethrone pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez in their WBA/WBC/WBO super middleweight unification battle on Saturday night on DAZN.

“This fight is all about the brain,” said Saunders. “Not about power, muscle or skill, it’s the brain and the game plan, and being able to execute that game plan. I brush opinions off because I know what goes through my head and my mind, and what I have done in my career is through the will and want to win, and the day I lose that, I won’t put a pair of gloves on again. Celebrities in Boxing

By Mauricio Sulaimán
Son of Jose Sulaiman / WBC President

Is it good to see celebrities inside the ring? Yes of course! But it is also important to take a number of steps to make it a safe plus resounding success.

Boxing is the oldest sport of mankind. It all began with battles for power and supremacy from the time of the caves, and thus evolved to find traces of this throughout the evolution of humanity. Andy Foster, the executive of the California Boxing Commission, recently confirmed to me that it is one of the few sports mentioned in the Bible, as per Saint Paul: Continue reading “Celebrities in Boxing”

Where Moruti Mthalane went wrong

By Peter Leopeng

So everyone is wondering whatever happened to Moruti Mthalane to have lost his IBF flyweight belt to unheralded relative novice Sunny Edwards. I’ve read and listened to all sorts of explanations, but listen to me when I say “Baby Face,” as Mthalane is affectionately known, need not have surrendered his world in that fashion.

Strategy or game plan is everything in any sporting event, more so especially in boxing. The great Sugar Ray Leonard often said you never go into a fight if you do not have a plan B, and sometimes even plan C. Strategy is everything in this sport we call the sweet science.
