Among the more than one hundred boxers who were training on Monday at the Pedro Alcazar Gym in Curundu, Panama City, a new face attracted attention. It was Belgian super lightweight Antoine Vanackere (16-1, 9 KOs), 26, who was sweating in the midday heat as he followed the instructions of the Arboleda family coaches.

A few meters away his father, promoter Alain Vanackere, was observing him, and told us “I had to meet here with WBA authorities to discuss the next defense of my new champion, cruiserweight Ryad Merhy, on July 17th in Belgium, so I suggested to my son, who will also fight in that event, to come with me and train here for 2 weeks”, said the father. “We are very happy to be in Panama to discover the country and especially this well-known gym,” he added.

Ramirez: I’ll always be the underdog

The countdown is on, and WBC/WBO junior welterweight world champion Jose Ramirez is 12 days away from a legacy-defining undisputed showdown against Josh Taylor, Scotland’s IBF/WBA kingpin. It’s business as usual for Ramirez, the 2012 U.S. Olympian from California’s Central Valley who hopes to become the first four-belt undisputed champion of Mexican descent. He’s spent the better part of two months training in Riverside, California, with Robert Garcia, who has guided his career inside the ring since after his March 2018 title-winning effort over Amir Imam.

With fight week seven days away, Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) is the prohibitive underdog for the first time in his professional career, as Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) is a more than 2-to-1 favorite at most sportsbooks. Continue reading “Ramirez: I’ll always be the underdog”

WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (30-1, 14 KOs) on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The reigning pound-for-pound king Canelo out of Guadalajara, Mexico, clocked into work once again in his third fight since December 2020, proved too strong for the Brit Saunders and stopped him on his stool between the eighth and ninth rounds and leaves the Lone Star State as the super middleweight unified world champion.

With the win, Canelo snatched the WBO belt from Saunders to go along with his WBC and WBA straps and now set his sights on IBF champ Caleb Plant this September for the undisputed title, which has been his stated goal. Continue reading “Canelo stops Saunders in eight”

Canelo-Saunders Undercard Results

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

2016 Olympic bronze medalist Souleymane Cissokho (13-0, 8 KOs) from Bagnolet, France by way of Senegal, scored a surprisingly close split decision to claim the WBA Intercontinental Super Welterweight title over UK’s Kieron Conway (16-2-1, 3 KOs).
It was a chess match from the opening round as neither fighter would give an inch. Cissokho often initiated the action with jabs to the head and body and Conway would look for a counter right hand. Cissokho also controlled distance throughout the fight and would often slip out of the way after he landed his jab or right hand. Conway was often a step behind as he tried to time the elusive Cissokho. Continue reading “Canelo-Saunders Undercard Results”
