Madrimov gets controversial win over Soro

In a WBA super welterweight eliminator, WBA #2 Israil Madrimov (8-0, 6KOs) scored a controversial ninth round TKO over WBA #1 Michel Soro (35-3-1, 24 KOs) on Friday night at the Renaissance Hall in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. When the bell rang at the end of round nine, Madrimov continued punching – landing half-a-dozen punches after the bell and referee Salvador Rodriguez then waved off the bout! The Soros’ corner complained bitterly and there was mass confusion that lasted some eight minutes before Madrimov was finally declared the winner. Madrimov is now the WBA mandatory challenger to champion Jermell Charlo unless the WBA orders a rematch.

Unbeaten YouTuber Jake “The Problem Child” Paul and former MMA world champion Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley previewed their rematch during the final press conference Thursday before they square off in the Showtime PPV main event this Saturday from Amalie Arena in Tampa.

Jake Paul: “This is no problem for me. I’m getting a big bag to beat the guy I already beat. It’s going to be a bank robbery. We added the $500,000 knockout bonus to his contract for this fight, but I don’t need anything else, I already have everything. My career has become about shutting people up. This is another version of that. We’re here to up the ante.”

Tyron Woodley: “Every time I hit him, he ran. When I got hit, I came right back into his face. August 29 was a Christmas gift. On December 18, it’s going to be a bad night for Jake Paul. I just need to go out there and get it done. This is round nine to me…I’m coming to smash him.” Continue reading “Paul-Woodley 2 Final Press Conference”

Alen Babic (9-0, 9 KOs) just found out his opponent will be David Spilmont this week. Usually weighing in the 210-215 range, “The Savage” is taking aim at the new bridgerweight division.

“Two weeks ago, [Eddie Hearn] slid into my DMs and asked if I wanted to fight, I said ‘yeah let’s go.’ People have routine victories, I have routine knockouts, I think Saturday is going to be another routine knockout. I’m going to operate like John Wick.

“I like this, I like this living. I give it all to boxing and for the next five to six years I just want to box – I don’t want to do anything else. I have a brilliant team. We are going for the bridgerweight title. I’m really into it and let’s go, I’m going to give my whole life to it and I’m sure we’re going to get it.”

Heavyweights Joseph Parker and Derek Chisora appeared at the final press conference ahead of Saturday’s rematch at the AO Arena in Manchester, England, live worldwide on DAZN.

Chisora chose not to speak, but here’s what Parker had to say:

Joseph Parker: “It’s great to be back in Manchester with the team. We’ve had a tremendous camp; this fight will be different from the first for sure. Not having a crowd made a big difference, I think Derek feeds off the crowd, I feed off of them too. A lot of fighters feed off the crowd and just having no noise and hearing specific voices it’s pretty weird…I want to probably knock him out between round six and ten.”

Ioka to defend WBO 115lb belt against Fukunaga

By Joe Koizumi

WBO junior bantamweight champ Kazuto Ioka (27-2, 15 KOs) has announced to defend his belt against Japanese and WBO Asia Pacific titlist Ryoji Fukunaga (15-4, 14 KOs), a hard-punching southpaw nicknamed “Little Pacquaio”, on New Year’s Eve at the Ota-city General Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. TBS Television makes it a rule to broadcast Ioka’s title defense on the last day of the year for years.

Originally Kazuto was slated to face IBF ruler Jerwin Ancajas for unification at the same venue on the same date, but it was pitifully canceled since our government, in the end of the previous month, abruptly declared a ban on foreign people’s entries into Japan in order to protect our country from a notorious emergence of omicron variant. It is very rare to stage a world title promotion in a couple of weeks after the public announcement. Our fight fans, however, will be able to watch another world title go within this year, which must be a good thing.

Former K-1 champ Takei scores third first-round demolition

Takei Quickly Demolishes Imamura 12 14 2021

By Joe Koizumi
Photos by Naoki Fukuda

On the undercard of the Inoue-Dipaen world bantamweight title bout, sensational former K-1 champ Yoshiki Takei (3-0, 3 KOs), 122.5, scored three consecutive first-round demolition in as many career when he needed just 59 seconds in the opening session to dispose of Kazuhiro Imamura (2-1-1, 1 KO), 121, in a scheduled eight on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan.  Takei, formerly K-1 Grand prix 122-pound champ, had registered a 23-2 mark with 16 stoppages.  Yoshiki, a stylish southpaw at 25, cautiously started fighting and caught Imamura with a southpaw right uppercut to put him prone en route to a fine TKO victory.  Prior to his debut in the international style fighting Takei engaged in an exhibition with ex-WBO flyweight champ Sho Kimura and lopsidedly battered him nearly at will.  Ohashi Promotions once planned to make Takei win any regional belt within three pro outings, but the WBO Asia Pacific body told Takei for at least ten professional bouts, which was very logical.  The vastly talented Takei, quick and hard-punching, will acquire any regional belt sooner or later.  This prospect is worth watching.

Serrano: Lightweight is where the big fights are

Amanda Serrano 5
Photo: Nick Levya/SHOWTIME

Woman’s P4P best and seven-division world champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano faces Miriam Gutierrez in the co-main event of Saturday’s Paul-Woodley PPV in Tampa, Florida. Serrano is moving up to lightweight in anticipation of challenging undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor next year.

“I have knockout power throughout all the weight classes, but I do feel stronger at this weight,” said Serrano. The girls at this weight are a little slower, so it’s going to be a different attack than what you saw from my last fight. I have a task in front of me and that’s Miriam Gutierrez. I always train like I’m the underdog. Once you overlook your opponent, you won’t get what you want in the future.”

Of course, if Serrano knocks out Gutierrez, it would send a message to Taylor, who beat Gutierrez by decision last year. Continue reading “Serrano: Lightweight is where the big fights are”

Recognition of the Greatness of Boxing

By Mauricio Sulaimán
Son of José Sulaimán / President of the WBC

This past Saturday a wonderful cycle culminated in the lightweight division; without a doubt, the most attractive category of today, filled with talent and potential great matches to be made. With great satisfaction, we see that the World Boxing Council concept of the franchise champion is flourishing.

This innovation arose to recognize those few elite boxers with special benefits, but most importantly to enable the great fights to be made.

This concept still has detractors. Resistance to change is a conservative and stubborn part of human nature, and systematic criticism from those who live in obduracy occurs incessantly when there are controversial issues.

It is confusing, but the results and the facts are what count. They speak for themselves. Continue reading “Recognition of the Greatness of Boxing”
