Matchroom announces May 15 UK show

WBA super featherweight champion Hyun-Mi Choi (18-0-1, 4 KOs), the longest-reigning world ruler in women’s boxing, will face WBC and IBO beltholder Terri Harper (11-0-1, 6 KOs) on May 15 at the AO Arena in Manchester, England. This will most likely be Matchroom’s last event in the U.K. behind closed doors, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

Former New England middleweight champion Kendrick “Peppa” Ball, Jr. (16-1-2, 11 KOs) won an eight round unanimous decision over veteran Bryan “The Warrior” Vera (28-17, 18 KOs) on the evening portion of Saturday’s “Crossroads” day-night doubleheader at New England Sports Center in Derry, New Hampshire. Scores were 79-73, 79-73, 78-74 as Ball became the WBC USNBC United States Silver super middleweight champion. Overall 18 fights took place during the day/night boxing marathon.

A new record was set during this event according to Greg Sirb, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. He pointed out that the shows included the most boxers on a card that were also on the ABC Watch List (10). The ten fighters went 0-10, with nine losing by KO.

Tooth abscess KOs Yarde return

World-rated light heavyweight Anthony Yarde has unfortunately been forced to withdraw from his return fight against unbeaten Emin Atra in London on Saturday. The 29-year-old is suffering with a tooth abscess, meaning his 10-rounder against the 17-0 Atra is now subject to a short delay.

“I am frustrated but it is what it is and I won’t rush anything,” said Yarde on his dental treatment. “It just makes me even more eager to get back out.

DKP seeking to halt Charr-Lovejoy fight

Hall of Fame boxing promoter Don King has sent a Cease & Desist letter to undefeated heavyweight boxer Christopher Lovejoy, claiming he is under an exclusive promotional agreement with Don King Promotions and not permitted to enter any future fights without King’s consent.

Recent media reports have stated that Lovejoy is currently in Germany and has agreed to face the WBA champion in recess Mahmoud Charr on May 15 in Hamburg, Germany. The letter demands that Lovejoy (19-0, 19 KOs), who had previously announced his retirement from boxing, not participate in the bout with Charr or any other future bout or opponent.

Australia’s biggest pay-per-view boxing attraction and Australian heavyweight contender Paul Gallen (10-0-1, 5 KOs) says he will defeat former WBA heavyweight champion Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (29-2, 25 KOs) on Wednesday at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre, Wollongong, NSW that will be televised on Foxtel Main Event Pay-Per-View.

WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (30-0, 18 KOs) wants his fellow champions to step up after he defended his title on points against Liam Williams on Saturday night in Hollywood, Florida. He says it’s time for fellow champions Jermall Charlo (WBC), Gennadiy Golovkin (IBF) and Ryota Murata (WBA) to make unification fights.

“At the end of the day I am a champion,” said Andrade. “I am undefeated. In the main event, unbeaten Ruben “Ace” Torres (15-0, 12 KOs) needed just 64 seconds to blow away Diego Contreras (11-4, 5 KOs). Contreras down 2x.

Unbeaten Miguel “El Explosivo” Madueno (23-0, 21 KOs) destroyed Bergman Aguilar (15-7-1, 5 KOs) in the first round. A body shot ended it at 2:59. It was Madueno’s U.S. debut.

George “El YuYu” Acosta (11-1, 1 KO) outpointed Edgar “Pito Lupillo” Ramirez (17-17-1, 14 KOs) in a six-rounder. Scores were 60-54 3x.

YouTuber-turned-cruiserweight boxer Jake Paul (3-0, 3 KOs) scored a spectacular first round KO over former MMA star Ben Askren on Saturday night in the Triller pay-per-view main event at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Paul dropped Askren with a big right hand and referee Brian Stutts waved it off. Time was 1:59. Quick stoppage.

Former super lightweight champion Regis Prograis (26-1, 21 KOs) won by six round technical decision over Ivan Redkach (23-6, 18 KOs). Prograis threw a clean grazing body shot (erroneously ruled a low blow) that left Redkach writhing on the canvas. Redkach was eventually taken from the ring on a stretcher. The bout went to the scorecards where Prograis was up 60-54, 60-54, 59-54.

Former cruiserweight world champion Steve Cunningham (30-9-1, 13 KOs) scored a six round unanimous decision over UFC legend Frank Mir who was making his pro boxing debut. Scores were 60-54, 60-54, 58-56. Cunningham was in control the whole way but Mir was never in danger of being stopped.

The scheduled ten round main event saw world-ranked Gustavo Daniel Lemos (27-0, 16 KOs) of Argentina stop countryman Maximilliano Ricardo Veron (12-3-1, 4 KOs) in round eight. Lemos was on the attack from the beginning until the end working the body and head. A rapid flurry stunned Veron against the ropes where the referee properly stopped the fight. WBO light flyweight champion Elwin Soto will defend his title against Katsunari Takayama as the co-feature to the super middleweight unification clash between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders on May 8 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, live on DAZN. Soto (18-1 12 KOs) fights under the Matchroom banner for the first time on the show having penned a deal with Eddie Hearn last week. 37-year-old Takayama (32-8 12 KOs) is a five-time minimumweight champion aiming to become a two-weight world champion.

Former WBC super welterweight world champion Tony “Superbad” Harrison (28-3-1, 21 KOs) and Bryant “Goodfella” Perrella (17-3-1, 14 KOs) battled to a twelve round draw on Saturday night at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles. It was a close, tactical boxing match with 5:1 underdog Perrella seemingly doing more. Scores were 116-112 Harrison, 117-111 Perrella, 114-114.

Undefeated super lightweight Omar “El Relampago” Juarez (11-0, 5 KOs) took a hard fought ten round unanimous decision over Elias Araujo (21-3, 8 KOs). Scores were 98-92, 99-91, 99-91.

In an upset, welterweight James Martin (7-2, 0 KOs) scored a deserved eight round majority decision over previously unbeaten 18-year-old prospect Vito Mielnicki Jr. (8-1, 5 KOs). Martin outworked Mielnicki to come away with a 76-76, 77-75, 79-73 verdict.

WBO middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (30-0, 18 KOs) defended his title by twelve round unanimous decision against Liam Williams (23-3-1, 18 KOs) on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Live at Hard Rock Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, Florida. Andrade dropped Williams in round two and Williams barely beat the count. Andrade, however, was unable to get the scrappy Williams out of there and the bout went the distance. Scores were 116-111, 118-109, 118-109.

Super middleweight Carlos Gongora (20-0, 15 KOs) retained his IBO title by eighth round KO over Christopher Pearson (17-3, 12 KOs).
