Interview: Jaron Ennis

Unbeaten welterweight contender Jaron “Boots” Ennis was back on the Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer for Round 2. Boots tells us why he thinks he’s the most talented fighter in the division, who he wants to step into the ring with next and when he will be the world champion.

Ennis on why he’s the most talented fighter in the welterweight division

I can box, I fight on the inside, I’m strong, fast, powerful, everything you need I have it and I’m well rounded in everything. I think this division, they’re only good at one thing or two things, but I’m good at everything.

Ennis on who he wants next in the ring

I want a top three or top five guy (the Keith Thurmans, Shawn Porters, Yordenis Ugas) that way it will put me in line for a world title by the end of the year or the beginning of 2022. I just want all the great fights and fight all the best fighters and that’s the goal.

Ennis on his talent

I haven’t shown the world my full potential, I’ve shown like 30%, 40%. I feel like I really haven’t had to go into my bag yet to show my full potential and in my last fight I was just warming up and I end up getting a knockout.

Ennis’ goal to be world champion this year

That’s the goal, fight the best, work my way up, I know I got to work my way up, I know they’re not just going to pick me and fight me and I respect it. I’m going to continue to work my way up to the world title, keep beating everybody they put in front of me and eventually I’ll be a world champion. I figure it will be the end of this year or beginning of 2022.

  • they should at some point let hope it doesn’t turn into a Spence Crawford scenario

  • As a PBC fighter he is in an enviable position to fight most of the best at 147. Yordenis Ugas should be the target IMO, to build a mega fight against Spence, if he wins the belt.

  • He needs a real step up opponent like Josetito Lopez, Luis Collazo, Jose Benevidez, or The Mean Machine Kavialauskus. But we already know those fights are too risky so he’ll be fed typically no hoper’s for 2 years.

  • This kid has a ton of talent but is no Virgil Ortiz when it comes to charisma and interviewing . I like how Boots didn’t trash his last opponent but found his statement about other welterweights doing only one or two things a bit ridiculous. Let’s see if he still feels that way after getting in the ring with Spence, Crawford, or Shawn Porter.

    • What charisma has Ortiz shown? That played out, Fernando Vargas-wannabe Aztec Warrior nonsense? Go on man!

      • Exactly. Just like Canelo. They both have the personality of a doorknob. I think we know the real reason someone would prefer Vergil to Jaron. Its sad that it always comes down to it…

    • That’s very subjective. You’re biased, and you like Vergil. Great. What does that have to do with whom the better fighter is?

  • Ennis is trying to be a master boxer puncher and not going fo the quick KO- it all shows he has a great boxing IQ. Ennis will beat Crawford and Spence and that will put him as the top P4P along with Canelo. He is that good.

  • If Ennis maintains discipline inside/outside the ring, he may become a monster at 147. 147 is no joke, and Ennis better not take matters for granted.

So far, great progress for Ennis, and I can’t wait to see his next fight.

  • Ennis is “The New Sugar” of this era…this kid has the magic in both hands & feet, we all see something very special in him…let’s all hope and pray the powers that be “allow him” to fully flower & bloosom with epic masterpieces and three fight trilogies like the great sugars of the past.
