David Benavidez: “Morrell has been talking about me for a while and disrespecting me. He wanted to make it personal with me, so I’m personally going to break his mouth. That’ll give him something to remember me by…he thinks he’s big and bad, but he’s nothing. I’m gonna show him who’s the best on February 1.”

David Morrell: “I’m getting the knockout. 100%. He’s all talk and no bite. He can’t do what he thinks he’s gonna do…he has no idea what he’s talking about, but he’s provoking me and now I want to go out there and beat the crap out of him. I’m here now and none of that talk matters.”

Tyson vs. Paul: Behind An Unforgettable Event

By Mauricio Sulaimán
Son of José Sulaimán – President of the WBC

I suppose that most of those who are reading my column knew that last Friday, Mike Tyson returned to the ring and faced Jake Paul.

There is so much to comment on everything that happened. and it is hard for me to put my thoughts in order. Let’s see how it turns out. I will not even hint on any negatives and will focus on the positive as this was a memorable event overall.

Mike Tyson is a legendary figure who will be talked about in 500 years and for eternity. He won the WBC world heavyweight championship at the age of 20 and was feared like few others during his reign. He was Undisputed after Don King made the heavyweight tournament, and regained his WBC crown after being released from prison. Continue reading “Tyson vs. Paul: Behind An Unforgettable Event”

McCall: I am always in shape

This Tuesday night at The Troubadour in Nashville, Tennessee, former WBC heavyweight champion Oliver McCall is set to return to action as he takes on veteran Stacy Frazier in a bout scheduled for four-rounds. At 59 years old, McCall will set the record for being the oldest former heavyweight champion to compete in a sanctioned fight. The record was set just four days earlier by former undisputed champion Mike Tyson when he took on Jake Paul in Arlington, Texas.

McCall, 59-14 with 38 knockouts knows that staying active over the last 19 years will separate his performance on Tuesday night from what Tyson looked like on Friday.

“I am ready. I have been training down here in Nashville for a few weeks, but I am always in shape. This will be a lot different then what fans saw on Friday. I think being active has a great deal to do with it. The only reason that I have not fought in five years was the pandemic and a few things falling through. If you look at my record, since 2005, I have fought 25 times and have been 19-6 with wins over quality fighters and have won various regional titles.” Continue reading “McCall: I am always in shape”

Ioka-Martinez to collide again on New Year’s Eve

Four-division champ Kazuto Ioka (31-3, 16 KOs) has announced to square off against his conqueror and current WBA superfly ruler Fernando Martinez (17-0, 9 KOs) with his belt on the line in Tokyo, Japan, on New Year Eve. The grudge fight will take place at Ota-city general gymnasium after their first encounter in July, when the Argentine puncher defeated the Japanese technician by a unanimous verdict (116-112, 117-111, 120-108) over twelve hard-fought rounds.

Ioka, 35, said, “I’ll demonstrate how I rebound and regain the world championship.” “Pumita” Martinez, 33, also appeared at the on-line press conference, saying, “I welcome this revancha (rematch). I’ll fight more carefully against Ioka this time.” It will be a very technical fight with the highly skilled 115-pounders with their pride and belt at stake since Fernando recently renounced his IBF belt by prioritizing this rematch than the IBF-ordered mandatory defense. Probably Martinez may prefer a better payday here in Japan. Continue reading “Ioka-Martinez to collide again on New Year’s Eve”

“This is one of those situations when you lost but still won. I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in ring one last time.

“I almost died in June. Had 8 blood transfusions. Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won.

“To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish 8 rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed Dallas Cowboy stadium is an experience that no man has the right to ask for. Thank you.”

Jake Paul: Tyson didn’t need to be hurt

YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has admitted that he carried 58-year-old ring legend Mike Tyson in their boxing match on Friday night in Arlington, Texas.

“I wanted to give the fans a show,” said Paul at the post fight press conference, “but I didn’t wanna hurt someone that didn’t need to be hurt. [I took my foot off the pedal] a little bit, yeah like I did. There was a point where you know I was just like ‘OK he’s not really engaging back and I don’t know if he’s tired or whatever’ and I could just tell that his age was showing a little bit.

“I just have so much respect for him, and that violence/war thing between us like after he slapped me, I wanted to be aggressive and take him down and knock him out and all that stuff, but that kind of went away as the rounds went on.”

Jake Paul decisions Mike Tyson

Jake Mike Sharpenai Softness

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

In an official heavyweight boxing match, Jake “El Gallo” Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) scored an eight round unanimous decision over 58-year-old ring legend “Iron” Mike Tyson (50-7, 44 KOs) on Friday night in front of 72,300-seat at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Scores were 80-72, 79-73, 79-73. The fight was fought with 14-ounce gloves and two-minute rounds.

Tyson came out strong in round one and landed the first blow of the night, a right hand to the head of Paul. Paul landed a shot later in the round as Tyson was warned of a low blow. Staying on the outside in round two, Paul scored with a body shot as Tyson landed a solid left hook. By round three, it was clear Tyson could not move well with a brace on his right leg as Paul continued to control the fight from the outside. In round four, Paul’s confidence grew as he let his hand go and hit Tyson with combinations. From rounds 5-8, it was mostly Paul picking his shots to the head and body whereas Tyson land an occasional left hook to Paul’s head. Continue reading “Jake Paul decisions Mike Tyson”

Taylor edges Serrano again

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

Super lightweight champion Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) out of Ireland went toe-to-toe with her Puerto Rican nemesis Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs) once again over ten brutal rounds and escaped the Lone Star State with a unanimous decision to retain her WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and Ring belts in another instant classic. Taylor barely beat Serrano via split decision in their 2022 fight of the year at Madison Square Garden. This time it was 95-94 3x.

In a continuation of their last fight, Serrano and Taylor went right to work. Serrano, a southpaw, showed off her blazing speed early and went right after Taylor and connected a left hook on the jaw at the end of the round. Taylor landed power right hands in round two and both exchanged blows in round three. Continue reading “Taylor edges Serrano again”

Barrios and Ramos battle to a draw

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

In a classic welterweight clash, “El Aztec” Mario Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) out of San Antonio battled fellow Mexican Abel Ramos (28-6-3, 22 KOs) out of Arizona to a split draw over twelve bloody, entertaining rounds on Friday night at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The scores read 114-112 Ramos, 116-110 Barrios and113-113.

Barrios came out on fire from the opening bell using a pinpoint one, two on Ramos and appeared to drop him in round one as it appeared Ramos’ hand touched the canvas. In round two there was no debate as Barrios put Ramos on his back with a left hand to the body followed by a right hand to the head. Using his clear size advantage, it seemed this might be an early night for the WBC welterweight champ. Continue reading “Barrios and Ramos battle to a draw”

Tyson-Paul Undercard Results

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

In the first boxing match on Netflix to kick off the Paul-Tyson heavyweight clash at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, super middleweight Neeraj Goyat 19-4-2 8 KOs, an actor and star in India, battled Brazilian musician YouTube sensation with 44.7 million subscribers Whindersson Nunes (2-3-1 2 KOs) over six entertaining rounds. Goyat used his experience and quick hands to out box Nunes to win a six round unanimous decision. Goyat, clearly an entertainer, waved his hands early in the fight to get the crowd engaged, and left his hands at his side to goat Nunes to throw punches. Goyat landed fast combos at times as Nunes countered at times and landed a few right hands, but not enough to win rounds. Goyat is signed to Most Valuable Promotions and even wants to fight his promoter, Jake Paul. Goyat called him out in the pre-fight presser and Jake responded that it would happen in India. For now, Goyat gets the title of the first winner on a live Netflix card to share with his millions of fans in India as the scores read 60-54 twice and 59-55.

Shadasia Green (16-1, 11 KOs) claimed the vacant WBO super middleweight belt with a hard fought win split decision against the undefeated Canadian Melinda Watpool (7-1, 2 KOs) for the vacant WBO super middleweight title. Green controlled the early rounds with on the outside as she landed a straight right hand to the face of Watpool. Watpool took the fight inside and had her most success as she took the fight to Green over the second half of the contest. Over ten action packed rounds, Green squeaked out the win with scores of 97-93 and 96-94 twice. Green wins her first world title after losing against Franchon Crews Dezurn for the WBC strap in 2023.

In a competitive super lightweight battle, Lucas Bahdi (18-0, 15 KOs) from Niagara Falls, Canada, scored a ten round majority decision against Armando Casamonica (14-1, 3 KOs) out of Rome Italy. It took some time to heat up as Casamonica was the early aggressor. Bahdi started to let his hands go in the middle rounds. In a tactical fight, neither fighter was hurt, as the fight lasted the full ten rounds. Scores read 95-95, 96-93, 98-92 for Bahdi as he remained undefeated with the victory and gave the Italian his first loss of his career.

In the opening bout at AT&T Stadium of the massive Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson battle live on Netflix, rising featherweight star Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington (15-0, 8 KOs) said he was going to steal the show versus Dana Coolwell (13-4, 8 KOs) and he sure tried to make his case early in the night. “Shu Shu”, a product of Brownsville, NY, like his idol “Iron Mike,” dropped Coolwell twice to score a dominant unanimous decision, 80-70 x 3.

Carrington put his full arsenal on display landing left hooks to the body, right hand uppercuts and everything in between. It was a left hook that dropped Coolwell in round four and the same shot that hurt him in round eight before “Shu Shu” put him down again with a flurry of shots in the corner. Coolwell was game and survived to the final bell but was no match for the ultra-skilled Carrington. The night could only get better for Carrington if “Iron Mike” beats Jake to win a 1 million dollar bet he made with Jake at weigh-ins on Thursday.
