WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) scored a sixth round one-hitter quitter over Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) before 18,570 on Saturday night at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn New York. No first round KO for Rolly, but he handed a good right before the bell. It was a tactical fight with Rolly holding his own until round six when Davis connected with a big left hand and dropped Romero. Rolly beat the count, but was unsteady and referee David Fields waved it off. Time was 2:39.

“He was strong for sure but there were a couple shots that I was getting warmed up with and he caught me and I was like, ‘I can’t sit with him just yet,’” said Davis afterward. “I know when to take it to my opponents and when to chill out…the crazy thing is that I didn’t even throw it that hard. He just ran into it. He just ran into it. Something like when Manny Pacquiao got caught. I didn’t even throw it that hard and he’s the one who ran into it, when he was talking that it was going to be me.”

Romero stated that he wants a rematch. “I want the fight again,” said Romero. “I exposed him and won every single round. I jumped into something and ate a stupid shot.”

WBA middleweight champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (29-3-3, 17 KOs) dominated and stopped Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan (31-5, 21 KOs) on Saturday night at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn New York. Lara, 39, dropped O’Sullivan in round four, then repeatedly rocked O’Sullivan in ensuing rounds until the bout was stopped at :23 of round eight.

“This new style that I’m demonstrating is for all the boxers to show them how I can fight now, just being able to change up,” said Lara. “He was a tough boxer, too. Unbeaten super welterweight Jesús Ramos avenged the loss of his uncle Abel Ramos to Luke Santamaria on Saturday night at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn New York. Ramos (19-0, 15 KOs) won a ten round unanimous decision over Santamaria (13-3-1, 7 KOs) by scores of 98-92, 97-93, 97-93.

Former WBA heavyweight world champion “Diamond Boy” Mahmoud Charr (33-4, 19 KOs) blew away Nikola Milacic (21-3, 14 KOs) in round three on Saturday night outdoors at Die Bucht in Hamburg, Germany. Easy work for Charr who dropped Milacic multiple times. Milacic was a late sub after Charr’s original opponent Jean Pierre Augustin was arrested at the airport when trying to catch a plane for Germany.

WBO #13 heavyweight Ali Eren Demirezen (16-1, 12 KOs), coming off his TKO over Gerald Washington on a January 1 PPV, topped 42-year-old former world title challenger Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson (35-19-1, 19 KOs) via eight round unanimous decision.

Heavyweight Christian Hammer (27-9, 17 KOs) knocked out journeyman Drazan Janjanin (22-35, 19 KOs) in the first round.

Heavyweight Michael Wallisch (23-5, 16 KOs) stopped Toni Thes (19-12-1, 13 KOs) in round two.

A small, but intrepid group attended the final meeting of IBF 37th annual convention this morning at 9:30 a.m. PST.

While some convention goers have already left for home, others had a very good time during and after last night’s awards banquet, hence their absence.

That being said, IBF president Daryl Peoples and the rest of the IBF board of directors gave thanks to the convention goers for their presence, shared ideas and commitment to the federation. Peoples also personally thanked the IBF front office staff of Jeanette Salazar, Tracy Lundy and Ruth Jimenez for their dedication and extremely hard work and making this convention a success.

Officials are set for tonight’s two WBA title bouts on Showtime PPV from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

For the WBA lightweight title bout between Tank Davis and Rolly Romero, the referee will be David Fields. Judges are Ron McNair (N.Y.), Kevin Morgan (N.Y.), and Robin Taylor (N.Y.)

For the WBA middleweight title fight between Erislandy Lara and Spike O’Sullivan, the ref will be Benjy Esteves. Judges are Allen Nace (N.Y.), Tony Paolillo (N.Y.), and Waleska Roldan (N.Y.)

The IBF closed the festivities portion of their 37th annual convention with the emotional awards banquet. The somber emotions were felt right off the bat as esteemed ring announcer Craig Stephen of Scotland, tolled the memorial ten count for fallen members of the IBF family. Board members Anibal Miramontes, Dr. William Lathan, Roberto Rea, Eddie Cotton, Neville Hotz, Vaughn LaPrade, IBF members Hilton Whitaker, Lindsey Page, Luigi Zaccardi, James Bagshaw, Herbert “Fritz” Werner, Isaac Xamlashe as well as boxers Patrick Day and Maxim Dadashev all passed over the last three years.

There was a buzz as a few familiar faces, who weren’t present at the “Meet the Champions” night made their entry into the ballroom. Day 4 of the IBF 37th Annual Convention got underway at 9:00 a.m. with the medical seminar. Doctors Rick Weinstein, Paul Wallace and Massimiliano Bianco delivered their respective talks during the morning session.

Dr. Wallace gave his talk entitled “Weight Cutting & Dehydration In Combat Sports.”

Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Rolando “Rolly” Romero had to be separated at Friday’s weigh-in. When posing for photographers, Romero stood in front of Davis, prompting Tank to push him off the stage! An enraged Rolly then tried to get at Tank, but both fighters were held back. Should be a good one tomorrow (as long as it lasts).

Heavyweight Otto Wallin returned to action for Salita Promotions Thursday night in Dearborn, Michigan. Wallin is looking to climb in the heavyweight rankings and crack the Top 5. Thursday brought him a tough challenge in Rydell Booker (26-6-1, 13 KOs). The style and weight of Booker would be Wallin’s toughest obstacles leading to his victory. Round one had Booker having some moments with a lunging left. Wallin controlled the first and second rounds. Wallin became frustrated early in the fight with Booker’s clinching style of boxing. In round four, Wallin was able to connect with a big left to Booker’s chin. The southpaw Wallin had his best round in the fifth, catching Booker on the ropes. Booker, who talked to Wallin throughout the fight, could not produce enough offense to threaten Wallin. The ninth and tenth Rounds of the scheduled 10-round bout had Wallin ending strong in the last seconds of those rounds. Booker, who was just too tough, went the distance.

“I knew he (Booker) was going to be dangerous for the first two rounds.. then try to survive. And that’s what he did,” Wallin said, after the fight. The judges saw the fight (99-91, 100-90, 99-91) all in favor of Wallin. The win improves Wallin’s record to (24-1, 14 KOs) as he looks to find bigger fights in the second half of the year. Lunga Sitemela from Cape Town won the South African junior lightweight title on a tenth-round stoppage against the defending champion Sibusiso Zingange of Pretoria at The Gallery in Sandton, Johannesburg on Thursday night. The general session of the IBF 37th annual convention kicked off in the Centennial Ballroom Thursday morning.

California State Athletic Commission Executive Director Andy Foster and Chairman Peter Nieves welcomed the convention to their state as well as discussed their roles as well as their long and prosperous relationship with the IBF. Nieves also mentioned his role with the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, KY. One of his initiatives is to petition the US Postal Service to commission a Muhammad Ali postage stamp. That effort will kick off on June 3rd.

The customary introductions then ensued with members from around the globe- from across the USA to as far as Mongolia, Luxembourg, Australia and Venezuela.

IBF president Daryl Peoples opened with the physical and emotional losses suffered by everyone in boxing and especially the IBF. The federation lost ratings chairman Anibal Miramontes, director Eddie Cotton, director and European representative Roberto Rea, Africa representative Neville Hotz and medical director Dr. William Lathan. Undisputed IBF, WBA, WBO, and WBC Franchise lightweight champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos should be considered as a top ten pound for pound boxer and the best Australia has produced if he defeats WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney on June 5 (June 4 in the USA) at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, televised on ESPN and Sky, according to Hall of Fame promoter Lou DiBella.

“If he beats Devin Haney, he has got to be considered a top ten pound-for-pound boxer in the world,” DiBella said. “If he beats Devin Haney, he becomes the biggest Australian fighter in my memory. Jeff Fenech was a star and Kostya Tszyu was a star. There were other stars and upcoming stars like Tim Tszyu. If George wins this fight there is no one on the Australian continent bigger than George Kambosos. I think if he wins this fight he can make claim to be a top ten pound-for-pound fighter.”

Five-time world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and unbeaten mandatory challenger Rolando “Rolly” Romero squared off at a tense final press conference Thursday before they meet in the Showtime PPV main event this Saturday from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Tank Davis: “I just want to show people that there are different levels when it comes to boxing. There are people that play boxing and there are people who have been doing this since they were kids. It’s time to show that I’m one of the guys who’s not to be played with. It starts with him and it’s going to continue.”

Rolly Romero: “This guy Davis talks about everything but the fight. He’s taking this fight personally. My job is just to beat him up. He’s very emotional. That’s why I’ve been calling him out. He has a big head for me to hit. I’m not going to say what punch I’m getting him with, but you’re all going to see on Saturday night. This is ending in one round.”

Southern California 140-pound standout Arnold Barboza Jr. (26-0, 10 KOs) wanted the main event spotlight. He’ll get his opportunity to shine when he takes on Puerto Rican contender Danielito “El Zorro” Zorrilla (16-0, 12 KOs) in a 10-round junior welterweight showdown Friday, July 15, at the Pechanga Summit at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California.

A bronze statue of former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was unveiled Wednesday at the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. At the ceremony, Wilder announced that he will be resuming his career “for sure.”

“I’ve been highly requested,” Wilder said, as reported by the Tuscaloosa News. “So many people have told me, ‘come back, come back.’ I’d say I’m back by popular demand. And the business of boxing needs me. When there’s a thriving American champion, there’s nothing like it. When there’s not, you see it’s dead. There’s a drought. People know the difference now.”

No date or opponent, but Wilder is rated WBC #1, so if champion Tyson Fury is really retired, Wilder will be right back in the mix.

WBA, IBF world bantamweight champion “Monster” Naoya Inoue (22-0, 19 KOs) showed a public workout before the press on Wednesday at Ohashi Gym in Yokohama, Japan. He looked fit and sharp in strenuous training thirteen days before his grudge fight with WBC ruler Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire (42-6, 28 KOs), 39, with the three belts on the line at the Saitama Super Arena on June 7.

Naoya replied to the press representative’s questions:

“I’m very much motivated to display my improved real power to Donaire. Whatever strategy he may select and show, I’ll cope with him with no problem since I’m in great shape. Last time I had a grueling fight with him, but this time it won’t become like that. I’ll be convincingly victorious without fail.”

Nhlanhla Tyirha returns to action for the first time since October last year when he meets the tough Filipino, Esneth Domingo in a ten round non-title light flyweight bout at the East London International Convention Centre on Saturday.

Domingo, 23, from Sultan, Kudarat who has compiled a record of 16-1, 8 KOs, will be having his second fight outside his home country.
