Linares: Let’s make the big fights happen

By Hesiquio Balderas

Jorge Linares post-fight quotes: “I won and that’s important, I made defensive moves, I didn’t feel his punches. I hurt my hand in the fourth round. I couldn’t land the punches as I wanted. But I took it easy, I was relaxed in there. Freddy (Roach) is supposed to be the best trainer in the world I beat his fighter. Freddy said Gesta was going to beat me with the left hook and he never landed it.

“I told Oscar I want the best, we are ready for the big fights and the good things. Let’s do the big fights, let’s make it happen. They (Mikey Garcia and Lomachenko) keep mentioning my name and that’s who I want next. I dedicated this fight to Japan, to Los Angeles and Las Vegas and especially to my country of Venezuela. We are going through tough times but I am putting all my best to make you all proud.”

Matthysse stops Kiram for WBA welter belt

By David Robinett at ringside
Photos: Sumio Yamada

It is an axiom of boxing that power is the great equalizer, and no better example of that was a past-his-prime, but still dangerous, Lucas Matthysse (39-4, 36 KOs) knocking out previously undefeated Thai challenger Tewa Kiram at 1:21 of round eight to capture the vacant WBA welterweight title in the HBO Boxing After Dark main event from Inglewood, California.

Up until the eighth round, it seemed as though the unknown Kiram (37-1, 27 KOs) might send Mattthysse into retirement in what amounted to a crossroads fight for Matthysse, as Kiram used his jab, length, and movement to stay out of range and frustrate the Argentinian slugger whilst boos rained down from a crowd anxious for blood from a typical Matthysse fight, despite the fight actually being an interesting contrast of styles. But early in round eight the previously ineffective right hand of Matthysse finally found the mark, at the end of a two-punch combination that sent Kiram to the canvas. Kiram rose gamely and traded with Matthysse when action resumed, but the damage from those followup punches, punctuated by a stiff left jab by Matthysse, sent Kiram down under the bottom rope for the full count. In a title bout pitting two fighters unbeaten since 2012, WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares (44-3, 27 KOs) successfully defended his title, as well as recognition as the Ring Magazine lineal lightweight champion, with a twelve-round unanimous decision over Mercito Gesta (31-2-2, 17 KOs) in the co-main event on HBO Boxing After Dark at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Scores for Linares were 117-111, 118-110, 118-110.

The southpaw Gesta started quickly, darting behind his right jab and landing quick left hands and short combinations, although a Linares counter right might have been the hardest punch of the round. Continue reading “Linares retains WBA lightweight title”

Undercard Results from the Forum

By David Robinett and Miguel Maravilla at ringside

Welterweight contender Marcelino Lopez (34-2-1, 19 KOs) fought back a spirited challenge from faded but game Breidis Prescott (30-12, 22 KOs), to score a knockout just before the bell at 2:59 of round five in a scheduled eight-round bout. Despite normally fighting a weight class lower than Prescott, Lopez traded with the bigger man from the start. The two put on an entertaining show, trading punches off and on early before Lopez started to pull away in round five. A short right hook by Lopez clipped Prescott late in the fifth and sent him to the canvas. Prescott beat the count in decent shape but went toe to toe with Lopez as the latter tried to close the show. A much bigger right hook caught Prescott flush right before the bell and dropped him on all fours, where he was counted out.

Filipino lightweight Romero Duno (16-1, 14 KOs) made quick work of Yardely Armenta (21-10, 12 KOs) in scoring a first round knockout. Duno was aggressive from the start attacking Armenta as a right hand did it dropping Armenta as referee Jerry Cantu reached a ten count at 1:07 of the first. 2016 Olympic bronze medal Filipi Hrgovic (3-0, 3 KOs) stopped British Tom Little (10-5, 3 KOs) in round four of their scheduled eight round heavyweight contest. The Croatian put on a strong start in round one, following Little through the ring an landing a straight right flush just before the bell, which made Little wobble and as he looked for the stool. Little tried to fire back in round two in order to earn some respect from Hrgovic landing something big but he does not seem to have the necessary stamina to keep his hands go continuously. The Birt showed his cheeky temperament in round three yelling at Hrgovic’s face to provoke him but the former Olympian stick to his plan, using his jab and fighting at a decent pace. In round four, Little did land a good right punch but then suffered the Hrgovic comeback, which after a flurry of punches forced referee Daniel Van de Wiele to stop his foe. Little was cut on his left eyebrow and had some trouble for a few seconds after the stoppage as he struggles to regain his balance. Continue reading “Undercard Results from Latvia”

Hearn: Parker never hit with Joshua’s ferocity and speed

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Eddie Hearn, promoter of IBF, WBA heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, has warned WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker that getting hit by Joshua is no laughing matter. Parker is on the record saying he will smile when Joshua lands his best shots.

”Apparently [Parker is] going to laugh when Anthony Joshua hits him on the chin. I hope he doesn’t. If he does, I think we’ve got something to worry about, because when Anthony Joshua hits you on the chin, I don’t think laughing is one thing you’ll be doing. But interesting comment,” Hearn told Sky Sports. “They say he’s got a granite chin, but he’s never been hit with the ferocity and speed of Anthony Joshua. It’s going to be a huge event on March 31 and one we cannot wait for.”

70,000 tickets already been sold according to Hearn.
