Shumenov stripped, Merhy named WBA cruiser champ

The World Boxing Association (WBA) withdrew its recognition of the cruiserweight champion Beibut Shumenov due to his long inactivity, promoting interim titleholder Ryad Merhy to full champion. Merhy must face Yuniel Dorticos in his next bout.

Shumenov had become champion on July 7, 2018 when he defeated Hizni Altunkaya. In October of that year he was ordered to fight Arsen Goulamiriam. In January 2019 the WBA summoned a purse bid for the two contenders to fight and Don King Promotions was awarded the rights to make the event in May of that year.

However, health problems prevented Shumenov to fight and he presented his case to the WBA Medical Committee, who informed the Championships Committee that, indeed, Shumenov was not fit to step into the ring at that time. Continue reading “Shumenov stripped, Merhy named WBA cruiser champ”

Manny Pacquiao named WBA champion in recess

Manny Pacquiao has been named champion in recess by the World Boxing Association (WBA) in a resolution issued by the Championships Committee, while Yordenis Ugas was promoted to welterweight super champion.

Pacquiao won the super champion belt in July 2019 when he defeated Keith Thurman, however, he has not defended the belt since then.

The WBA, according to its rule C.14, dictates that champions and their teams are required to know the WBA rules and regulations. Rule C.22-24 states that when a champion is unable to defend the belt for medical, legal or other reasons beyond his control, he may be named champion in recess. The medical reasons must be documented before the WBA Medical Committee, while the legal reasons must be evidenced before the legal director and the Championships Committee.

Any inconvenience that may arise in the process will be resolved under the guidelines of the WBA regulations.

WBA sanctions Bryan vs. Stiverne

The World Boxing Association (WBA) declared heavyweight Mahmoud Charr as champion in recess after 38 months without defending the world title.

The decision was made strictly based on WBA regulations. As Rule C.14 dictates, all boxers, promoters and representatives are obliged to know and familiarize themselves with the WBA regulations. On the other hand, Rule C.22-24 states that when a champion is unable to defend the title belt at the time specified, whether for medical, legal or any other reason beyond his control, the Committee may appoint him as champion in recess and call the official contenders to fight. Team Charr Statement

Entry was imminent. All formalities were settled. Only a valid P1 visa stood in the way of the planned fight between Mahmoud Charr and Trevor Bryan in the USA. This was also already organized and could easily have been issued, but since Don King Productions still refuses to sign a valid fight contract and cannot provide any confirmation for the venue, the US consulate in Frankfurt am Main, to the chagrin of everyone, could not hand over the visa, as the consulate announced in writing. Charr-Bryan Update 2

Looking pretty certain now that we’re going to be getting WBA interim heavyweight champion Trevor Bryan against former WBC champ Bermaine Stiverne on Friday night. It also appears that WBA champ Beibut Shumanov is out, so an opponent is needed for WBA #8 cruiser Raphael Murphy.

Title ramifications are uncertain. Promoter Don King is pushing for Bryan-Stiverne to be for the full WBA title currently held by Manuel Charr. This would necessitate Charr being stripped or made ‘champion in recess.’ Stiverne, however, has lost three of his last four, so WBA approval isn’t a certainty.

Not clear whether Murphy’s fight will be for a title.

You can order the PPV stream at donking.com.
