RIP Mitchell Rose

Sad to report the passing of former heavyweight boxer Mitchell Rose at the age of 51. Rose, a career journeyman with a mark of 2-11-1, 2 KOs, first came into the national spotlight when he handed the previously unbeaten Eric “Butterbean” Esch a shock defeat by second round TKO at Madison Square Garden. Seven years later, Rose was in the news again after a scuffle with Mike Tyson inside a Brooklyn nightclub. He later wrote a book on the incident, titled “Mike Tyson Tried To Kill My Daddy.” We’ll update this story when more information comes in.

WBA orders Goulamirian-Egorov clash

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee ordered the mandatory bout between cruiserweight super champion Arsen Goulamirian and Aleksey Egorov.

Frenchman Goulamirian won the title on May 31st, 2019, so the deadline to face Russian Egorov has lapsed. Based on the regulations, the Committee gave a 30-day period for negotiation, which will start this February 11, 2021 and end on March 13 (- 5 GTM). Continue reading “WBA orders Goulamirian-Egorov clash”

Maruta halts WBC#9 Sagawa, wins Japanese 126lb belt

Elongated Japanese prospect, JBC#1 Hinata Maruta (11-1-1, 9 KOs), 125.5, impressively dethroned WBC#9/IBF#11 national feather champ Ryo Sagawa (10-2, 5 KOs), 125.25, by a fine TKO victory at 2:57 of the seventh session on Thursday in Tokyo, Japan. Sagawa, making his third defense, took a very solid right and almost lost his equilibrium just before the bell to end the third, which obviously hurt him physically and mentally in following rounds. After the fifth, the open scoring system showed the challenger Maruta leading on points: 49-46 twice, 48-47. Sagawa, formerly a university boxer, fought back hard in the sixth, but Maruta, in round seven, caught him with his favorite right, dropping him on the deck. His follow-up combinations decked the champ again at the referee Fukuchi’s intervention. Standing at 5’9.5”, Maruta, 23, looks promising and talented. Andy Ruiz Update

Several images through social media have shown the physical transformation of former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz, who has not fought since December 2019 when he lost the WBA, IBF and WBO belts against Anthony Joshua. In June 2019, he shocked the world by knocking out Joshua at Madison Square Garden, New York, but there was a big difference when he returned to the ring for the rematch later that year and was several pounds over compared to his first fight.

Since that loss, Ruiz has made several changes in his career, most notably joining Team Canelo to train with Eddy Reynoso and focus on losing weight to improve his mobility and boxing style. Continue reading “Andy Ruiz Update”

A charity event named “Legends” was very sensational and successful on Thursday in Tokyo, Japan. WBA, IBF bantam champ “The Monster” Naoya Inoue (20-0, 17 KOs) looked too sharp, strong and smart, as expected, for ex-WBC flyweight ruler Daigo Higa (17-1-1, 17 KOs), giving him a lesson all the way for three three-minute exhibition sessions at the Yoyogi First Gymnasium, originally constructed for the Olympic Games. Inoue proved he was excellent and effective in offense and defense against the onrushing hard-puncher Higa. Continue reading ““Monster” Inoue, Uchiyama shine in charity event”

Hearn eying Teofimo-Kambosos purse bid

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Promoter Eddie Hearn could be placing a bid on the IBF lightweight title bout featuring undisputed champion Teofimo Lopez and IBF mandatory contender George Kambosos that will be held at IBF Headquarters on February 18. “What happens is these governing bodies, they give you a period of time to negotiate and if you can’t come to an agreement, it goes to purse bids,” Hearn said on DAZN’s Ak & Barak Show.

“That period of time now has expired, so there will be a purse bid for that coming up in about a week’s time. Which is really interesting because then it becomes an open marketplace. Right? So, all of a sudden, DAZN, PBC, Top Rank, of course, can bid for this fight.”
