Foster, weighing in at 174 looked sharp throughout, maintaining optimum punching range and landing both to the head and body of the aggressive Thomas. Dropping Thomas in the second with a nicely timed straight left, Foster maintained the lead utilizing excellent movement and connecting accurate combinations up and down to walk away with the victory and belt by scores of 100-89 across the board. Ortiz looking to make history

When unbeaten heavyweight Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz faces WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on Saturday, he can become the first Latino or Hispanic heavyweight world champion born outside of the U.S. and just the second heavyweight of Latino or Hispanic descent to capture the heavyweight world title. The first was Massachusetts’ John Ruiz, whose parents were Puerto Rican and who defeated Evander Holyfield for the WBA heavyweight title in March 2001.

“This fight is not only important for my family, but for Cuban boxing history,” said Ortiz. “My only focus right now is on the strategy I will need to defeat Wilder, but I know this fight has a lot of significance. I’m going to make history for myself and my country when I knock out Wilder on March 3.” Continue reading “Ortiz looking to make history”

Srisaket edges Estrada, keeps WBC superfly title

By Rocky Morales at ringside
Photos: Sumio Yamada

Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (44-4-1, 39KO) retained his WBC Super Flyweight title with a hard fought battle in a scintillating majority decision victory over Juan Francisco Estrada (36-3, 25KO) on Saturday night at the Forum in Los Angeles.

Estrada got off to a good start in the early rounds but then Rungvisai’s simple but effective and powerful punches started to find a home in the middle rounds. Despite some heavy leather being traded and a few tangled feet resulting in downed fighters, there were no knockdowns in the fight.

Estrada was most effective when he had the opportunity to counter Rungvisai but, by the championship rounds, Rungvisai fought a very controlled fight and the opportunities for Estrada to counter dried up. In the twelfth and final round, Estrada threw everything he had at Rungvisai but it was in vain and, while enough to win the round, not quite enough to win the fight. By scores of 114-114, 117-111 and 115-113, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai retains his title by majority decision to the utter disappointment and disapproval of the large Mexican fan base in attendance.

Nietes KOs Reveco, retains IBF fly title

By Rocky Morales at ringside

IBF flyweight champion Donnie Nietes (41-1-4, 23KO) scored a spectacular knockout victory over the very tough two-time world champion, Juan Carlos Reveco (39-4, 19KO) on Saturday night at the Forum in Los Angeles. The two fighters were engaged in a tactical battle for the first few rounds that elicited disapproving boos from the crowd but action opened up in the sixth round with Nietes badly hurting Reveco with a devastating right hand counter at the end of the round.

Reveco wobbled back to his corner, possibly already concussed, was examined by the doctor between rounds and allowed to continue. Coming out for the seventh round, it was evident that Reveco’s legs were gone. Nietes came right after him and ended a flurry of punches with a perfectly landed uppercut that floored Reveco. Dalakian beats Viloria for WBA flyweight title

By Rocky Morales at ringside

Artem Dalakian (16-0, 11KO) captured the vacant WBA Flyweight title with an impressive performance over four-time world champion, Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria (38-6, 22KO) on Saturday night at the Forum in Los Angeles. The younger, 30-year-old Dalakian outboxed Viloria the entire time and proved to be too quick and elusive for the 37-year-old to catch.

Dalakian really left no doubt as he not only proved hard to hit but also landed a number of hard power punches, as well. Dalakian hurt Viloria badly in the eleventh round and left him a bloody mess after opening a gash on his forehead with an elbow. By scores of 118-109 on all three scorecards, Dalakian wins the title vacated by Kazuto Ioka and shows himself a force to be reckoned with in the flyweight division and a potential opponent in a flyweight unification bout for the winner of the Nietes vs Reveco. In the main event, welterweights Thomas LaManna, Millville, NJ, 25-2-1, 9 KOs, and Brooklyn’s Gabriel Bracero, 24-3-1, 5 KOs, fought to a ten round split decision draw. Many of the rounds were close and one of the official judges scored it that way. Lawrence Layton had the bout 95-95, but the other two judges split the vote rather one-sidedly. Joe Pasquale favored LaManna 98-92, while Pierre Benoist thought Bracero was the winner 97-93. I scored the close fight 96-94 for LaManna. Continue reading “LaManna, Bracero battle to draw”
