Barry: Parker on track for great performance

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker is looking good in training for the March 31 showdown in Cardiff, Wales against IBF, WBA heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua according to trainer Kevin Barry. “Joe has been very disciplined and on point. His body looks really good. He is in much better shape already than he was for the Hughie Fury fight,” Barry told Stuff.”He’s doing some great strength and conditioning work, I’m confident we are on track for a very good performance.

“We both believe this is the right time to fight Anthony Joshua. If we don’t get the result that we think we are going to get, it’s because we’re simply not good enough. There is no other reason. If we don’t beat him, it’s because he is the better fighter. But we are both very confident, we like where we are at, we are excited by the magnitude of this challenge. I’ve said all along, the bigger the challenge will bring the best out of Joseph.”

Canelo: I’d Never Consider MMA Like Floyd

By TMZSports.com

Canelo Alvarez says he wouldn’t be caught dead in an MMA cage because he’s got too much love and respect for boxing … unlike Floyd Mayweather. With all the buzz about Floyd possibly taking a UFC fight, we had to ask Canelo if he’d consider crossing over, too. Canelo shut that down quick — and shaded his former rival in the process.

“I respect boxing. Boxing’s my sport. That’s what I love. The other sport, that’s something we’ll never know,” he told TMZ Sports. As for Floyd — “With him you never know … but you know what? Whatever he does doesn’t interest me.”

Of course, Canelo’s focus is on his May 5 rematch vs. GGG … and both guys let us know why this one’s a way bigger deal than their first matchup.

WBC 118lb champ Nery, Yamanaka glove dispute

By Joe Koizumi
Photos by Naoki Fukuda

In a press conference on Tuesday for this coming world title twinbill, there happened a hot dispute between WBC bantam champ Luis Nery (25-0, 19 KOs) and former titlist Shinsuke Yamanaka (27-1-2, 19 KOs) on the gloves to be used for their highly anticipated rematch on Thursday in Tokyo, Japan.

The local promoter, Teiken Promotions, prepared Reyes gloves for both contestants as it respected the champ’s nationality and believed that Nery would love to use Mexican brand of gloves. Nery, however, strongly insisted on using Winning gloves made in Japan since he won the first encounter by using Winning ones, kept on training with Winning in Mexico and prefers fighting with the same brand of gloves again. Yamanaka, on the contrary, supposed that the revancha would be competed with Reyes gloves and prepared to use Reyes throughout his training. WBA 122lb champ Roman, Matsumoto make weight

By Joe Koizumi
Photos by Naoki Fukuda

A couple of handsome boys will square off tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan. It is rare to stage a world title bout at the Hall (the capacity of which is only 2,000 plus at maximum), as our impresarios usually like to use a bigger stadium in Tokyo for world title bouts such as Ryogoku Sumo Arena, Ota-City General Gymnasium, etc. WBA super bantamweight champ Daniel Roman (23-2-1, 9 KOs) tipped the beam at 121.25, while Japanese challenger Ryo Matsumoto (21-1, 19 KOs) at the 122-pound class limit at the Korakuen Hall’s exhibition hall.

Prior to the weigh-in ceremony, we saw a press conference with WBA officials: referee Luis Pabon (Puerto Rico); judges Glenn Feldman (US), Mikael Hook (Sweden), Chalerm Prayadsab (Thailand); supervisor Alan Kim (Korea). Continue reading “WBA 122lb champ Roman, Matsumoto make weight”
