NYSBHOF dates for 2020 and 2022 classes

The COVID-19 pandemic certainly knocked down boxing in general for the past 1½ years. Ring 8, though, remained busy despite not being able to hold its monthly meetings.

Despite no revenue-generating events as it normally has several times during the year, Ring 8 got up off the mat and recorded a KO victory on several fronts.
Ring 8 distributed more than $11,000 in financial assistance to numerous deserving people in the boxing community, ranging from boxers to trainers, cornermen and those in the boxing community who were in need.

Another success story during the pandemics was the founding and funding of the “Patrick Day Sports Achievement Award”, a $5,000 scholarship to be distributed to a worthy Freeport High School student in increments of $500.00 per year for 10 years. Figueroa KOs Nery to unify 122lb belts

Luis Nery Vs Brandon Figueroa
Photo: Esther Lin/Showtime

By Rocky Morales at ringside

WBA super bantamweight champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa (22-0-1, 17KO) was relentless in defeating previously undefeated two-division WBC champion Luis Nery (31-1, 24KO) in a WBA and WBC super bantamweight unification bout on Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Figueroa showed little respect to Nery and Nery eventually yielded the middle of the ring. At that point, Figueroa became the hunter and Nery became the hunted.

Nery had no answer to keep the taller, younger and harder punching Figueroa off of him and his only hope seemed to be if he could land a counter punch while Figueroa was coming in. Despite being in control of the fight, Figueroa never took his foot off the gas and just kept coming. Continue reading “Figueroa KOs Nery to unify 122lb belts”

Hill Stops Julio Bassa in Myrtle Beach

Hill Julio Bassa

By Boxing Bob Newman

In the main event of Christy Martin’s sold-out show at the Crown Reef Resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, New Orleans lightweight Jeremy Hill took out Colombian Deivi Julio Bassa with a four-knockdown beating. Dropping Bassa twice in round two and twice more in the fourth, prompted referee Bill Clancy to halt matters at 2:09 of the round. Hill was coming off his first career loss in March, while Bassa was coming off a recent win in March. Julio Bassa showed excellent ring genetics as he is related to former Colombian world champions Jorge Eliecer Julio and Fidel Bassa. He was able to land some nice counters on Hill, but once Hill realized the naturally smaller Bassa couldn’t hurt him, he opened up, scoring the knockdown and hurting Bassa even when he didn’t knock him down. With the win, Hill moves to 15-1, 9 KOs, while Bassa falls to 22-10, 14 KOs. Continue reading “Hill Stops Julio Bassa in Myrtle Beach”

Don King: WBA hasn’t sanctioned illegal bout

Heavyweight boxer Christopher Lovejoy, who has an exclusive promotional agreement with Hall of Fame boxing promoter Don King, nor the promoters of Saturday’s boxing card in Germany, are complying with the Cease & Desist letter they received several weeks ago.

Lovejoy has weighed in and plans to fight the WBA champion in recess Mahmoud Charr on Saturday night in Germany.

“Lovejoy and the German promoter are defying the law,” said King. “We have served them and justice will prevail. We will see who will be “quacking” when we get to court and the legal process decides that everything is there in black and white.

“Lovejoy is out there popping off and feels that this fight is for the WBA championship. The WBA hasn’t sanctioned this illegal bout and they certainly won’t do so. Trevor Bryan is the WBA champion. Continue reading “Don King: WBA hasn’t sanctioned illegal bout”

Doubt Cast Over Claim of Corbett-Courtney Being First Fight Ever Filmed

By Boxing Bob Newman

Argentine boxing historian, author, radio and TV broadcaster Marcos Vistali, contacted this writer earlier this week with what he feels is a significant historical find in the world of boxing. Read on to learn about this discovery, in Vistali’s own words…

We all know, by now, that the first fight to be filmed was that of James Corbett with Peter Courtney on October 7, 1894. It was not that film that drew attention to boxing. Before the brothers Auguste and Louis Loumière introduced it, as early as 1888 an English photographer Eadweard Muybridge took serial images of boxers, which were then intended to be passed in sequence to give the sensation of movement.
