By Mauricio Sulaiman
Son of Jose Sulaiman / President of the WBC

The World Boxing Council unveiled the Mestizo Belt this past Thursday in Toluca, in the State of Mexico.

The WBC commemorative belts, of May 5 and September 16, were created to serve as a majestic trophy, which is presented to the winner of the highest-ranking fight held on these two traditional Mexican holidays, regardless of the nationality of the contenders.

Mestizo Belt

It is a tradition spanning more than 40 years, so much so, that the most important fights take place precisely around these two dates, and it is more than significant, for the most important boxer in the world to define his annual calendar taking them into account as the focal point. These dates have been passed down for generations between Sal Sánchez, Julio Cesar Chávez, Oscar de la Hoya, Érik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Márquez, Floyd Mayweather and now Saúl Canelo Álvarez. Presenting Erick Rosa, The Mini-Pacman

ShuanrosaBy Robert Coster

He is a diminutive (5’2″) 105 lbs boxer with an innocent schoolboy face. But do not be fooled: Erick Rosa is a bona fide boxing contender. he is ranked 2nd by the WBA and holds the WBA Latino and Fedelatin titles, this with only 3 pro fights (3-0,1KOs). The “mini Pacman ” as he is nicknamed is becoming something of a small celebrity in his native Dominican Republic, appearing on TV shows and, in August, will be fighting unbeaten WBA 5th ranked Ricardo Astulvica (21-0, 4 KOs) of Peru. The fight, which will be held in Santo Domingo, will be for the WBA world interim title. Rosa turned pro in October of last year, making boxing history by being the first boxer to win two regional title belts in his pro debut. He has since then, defended his belts twice. Rosa’s career is being guided by Shuan Boxing Promotion. Fightnews® questioned its CEO Belgica Pena about their 21-year-old phenom. Continue reading “Presenting Erick Rosa, The Mini-Pacman”

Triller sues PPV pirates

Triller Fight Club today announced that it has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court of Central California with regard to widespread piracy that impacted their April 17 Triller Fight Club Pay Per View event that was held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The lawsuit seeks $100 million in damages from the groups named.

“It’s shocking to think a theft so grand can be done so blatantly and brazenly and with no remorse. There is zero difference between what they did and walking into a market stealing tons of a product and selling it at a discount in the parking lot. It’s neither civilly nor criminally any different, and we are prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law. There were more than two million illegal streams, akin to hundreds of millions of dollars,” said Ryan Kavanaugh, co-controlling shareholder of Triller.

Edwards: I’m not going to try and beat him in a fight

IBF flyweight champion Moruti “Baby Face” Mthalane (39-2, 26 KOs) says he expects challenger Sunny Edwards (15-0, 4 KOs) to run when they fight on Friday night at York Hall in London.

And Edwards agrees with him!

“I think I will have to move around and have a look for the whole 12 rounds, to be honest. You don’t go head on against an immovable object, I’ve got to try and work around it for as long as I can…this is definitely a 12-round fight and I have trained for 15. All I know is, I wouldn’t try and beat him in an arm wrestle, so I am not going to try and beat him in a fight!”

ESPN+ has picked up the fight for U.S. transmission.

Mthalane: Edwards will run all over

When Moruti Mthalane steps into the ring at London’s York Hall this weekend, it will be six days shy of 500 since he last defended his IBF flyweight championship. It’s a massive gap for a man who makes his living as a fighter, but, as with everything in Mthalane’s life, he’s learned to roll with the punches.

“What can you do?” he asks philosophically. “Covid has messed everything up.”

For his fourth title defense, against England’s Sunny Edwards this weekend, the man they call “Baby Face” had to stage a phase of his training camp in unfamiliar Tunisia before heading for London via Paris, all because of the restrictions on South African travelers. WBO featherweight champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete (34-1, 29 KOs) defended his world title by twelfth round TKO against Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz (26-3, 16 KOs) on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd of 3,262 at the socially distanced Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida. Navarrete dropped Diaz in round four with a lead uppercut. Diaz was deducted a point in round seven for hitting on the back. Navarrete floored Diaz twice in round eight and again in round twelve. Diaz’ corner finally pulled their man out with 11 seconds left.

Navarrete said, “I think we did put on a worthy performance (of Mexico vs. Puerto Rico) because ‘Pitufo,’ I knew he was tough, I knew he was strong. And I knew he could hit hard, but he surpassed all my expectations. He brought out all the best in me and so I’ve got a lot of respect for Christopher ‘Pitufo’ Diaz. Wins WBO Asia Pacific 118lb belt

By Joe Koizumi

Unheralded ex-amateur novice Ryosuke Nishida (4-0, 1 KO), 118, upset former WBC champ Daigo Higa (17-2-1, 17 KOs), 118, by a unanimous decision (117-111 twice, 118-110) over twelve heats and captured his WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight belt on Saturday in Ginowan, Okinawa, Japan.

In a homecoming event of the defending champ and prohibitive favorite Higa, an unexpectedly huge upset took place with the taller southpaw rookie effectively outpunching the power-punching champ. Nishida, moving down from the 122-pound category, utilized his physical advantage and effectively had Higa befuddled with the underdog’s aggressiveness from the start. Teraji defeats Hisada, keeps WBC 108lb belt

01

By Joe Koizumi
Photos by Naoki Fukuda

Unbeaten WBC light-flyweight champ Kenshiro Teraji (18-0, 10 KOs), 107.25, kept his belt as he displayed his superior speed on hand and foot, winning a unanimous decision (118-109 twice, 119-108) over Tetsuya Hisada (34-11-2, 20 KOs), 108, over twelve fast rounds on Saturday in Osaka, Japan. Teraji floored Hisada with a well-timed overhand right in round two to take the initiative from then on. The referee was Yuji Fukuchi, Japan.

It was a less spectacular contest though the champ making his eighth defense won as expected. It was like a Tom-and-Jerry race with Hisada stalking all the way, while Teraji retreating and circling with some counters to the onrushing challenger.

The officials’ tallies might show a one-sided game, but it wasn’t so but a monotonous accumulation of close rounds, almost all of which went to the less aggressive champ who, however, connected with better precision.

Hisada, formerly a long-time Japanese national titlist, already 36, started well from the outset, winning the first and third rounds on a couple of judges’ scores. But the fleet-footed champ’s left-right combo decked the challenger so early in the second, which deprived Hisada of his rhythm and fight plan in following rounds.

After the fourth, the WBC open scoring system showed Teraji leading on points—38-37 twice and 40-35 all in the champ’s favor. The differences on the tallies would become wider as the contest progressed.

Moving side-to-side and to-and-fro, Teraji, 29, averted nearly all Hisada threw in pursuing the Fancy Dan, who kept jabbing, moving and countering on his safety-first game plan.

The tallies announced after the eighth clearly proved it’s Kenshiro’s game—78-72 twice and 79-72. It also proved that Hisada wouldn’t be victorious unless he should score a come-from-behind knockout in any of the last four sessions.

It appeared the delayed runner attempted to fully exert himself to catch up with the frontrunner by a mile in the marathon race. The last four sessions saw Hisada seldom land any effective shots to the champ still floating like a butterfly. It was revealed–after the fight–that Hisada suffered an optical accident upon his second-round visit to the deck that unfortunately caused a double vision thereafter.

Teraji, in the last four rounds, connected well with a few jabs, uppercuts and right crosses despite his energy-saving strategy. Hisada, though throwing much more blows, hit only the air. The champ swept all with ease down the stretch.

Originally slated on December 19, this contest had to be re-scheduled four months later because of the champ Teraji’s unsocial misdemeanor that he had destroyed a stranger’s car while he was heavily intoxicated. Though he proved he could punch, he was eventually suspended for three months and fined some 30,000 USD by the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC).

Kenshiro apologized for his previous scandal on the ring. “I deeply sorry to have badly bothered people concerned as well as Hisada.

Now that he sincerely reflected on his unpleasant affair, he will not do it again.

The crestfallen loser said in the dressing room, “I will hang up gloves for good. I have done all with my best efforts. I simply appreciate warm supports by my people and my family.” He was truly a game warrior.

Another winner might be the promoter Masato Yamashita of Shinsei Promotions. Our government just declared a state of emergency to avert the nationwide infection of the COVID-19 from Sunday to May 11—for the third time. Just a day prior to the declaration, he could breathlessly have this event done as scheduled—with some 2,200 spectators in attendance. It was the very first world title contest staged here in Japan this year.
