Fight Week: Herring-Stevenson, bridgerweights

Two notable world title fights this week.

On Friday night, the first over WBC bridgerweight world title clash will take place as Oscar “Kaboom” Rivas (27-1, 19 KOs) meets undefeated Ryan “The Bruiser” Rozicki (13-0, 13 KOs) at the Montreal Olympia. The weight limit is 224 lbs. ESPN+ will air the fight.

On Saturday night is the grudge match between WBO junior lightweight world champion Jamel Herring (23-2, 11 KOs) and undefeated former featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson (16-0, 8 KOs) at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. ESPN/ESPN+ will deliver the action.

Top Rank inks 17-year-old

17-year-old lightweight Abdullah Mason has signed a professional contract with Top Rank and will turn pro in a four-rounder on ESPN+ November 5 on the Mikaela Mayer-Maiva Hamadouche undercard at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

“Abdullah Mason is one of the most electrifying young fighters I’ve ever seen, a 17-year-old who is ready to be a sensational professional,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “He’s held his own in sparring against the best pros in the world, and everybody I’ve spoken to raves about his talent and work ethic. Four-division world champion Mikey Garcia weighed in on his shock loss to Sandor Martin after the fight.

“I thought it was a good fight, you know, he fought a very good fight, he was boxing. I thought I did what was necessary, to close the gap, putting the pressure, looking for the fight. He was the one moving around, running around a lot. He was able to counter a few times but I was the one actively looking for the fight. I thought I was ahead on the cards. You know, it is what it is. There’s three judges and they decided he was the one winning the fight.

Fuentes undergoes surgery after KO loss

On Saturday night, Shearns Boxing Promotions presented the first professional boxing show ever in Framingham, Massachusetts, at the Sheraton Hotel.

The main event saw local super lightweight Nelson “Chino” Perez (4-0, 2 KOs), fighting out of neighboring Marlborough, has to overcome the awkward style of “Outlaw” Ryan Venable (2-9, 0 KOs), which included several rounds of obvious frustration. Perez settled down nicely and took the fight to Venable, flooring him in the third and again in the sixth, en route to a six round unanimous decision. Scores were 59-53, 59-53, 59-53. Elizando stuns undefeated Angel Baby

For boxing fans in the Duke City, Saturday night was supposed to be the long awaited return of the Sweet Science in Albuquerque. And more specifically, the return of undefeated lightweight prospect Aaron “Angel Baby” Perez. Perez, 134.4, had not fought in front of his hometown crowd since November of 2019 and was hoping to make a statement against the dangerous Nevadan, Diego Elizondo, 134.8. But Elizondo, who had always shown flashes of brilliance in his eight fight career, finally put the pieces together in the ring (and finally got the judges to score his fight correctly) as he derailed the talented New Mexico, winning a comfortable ten round decision. Hearn goads Diaz into fighting Haney

On Saturday’s DAZN stream, promoter Eddie Hearn said he has offered JoJo Diaz the same money JoJo would have made for fighting injured Ryan “Kingry” Garcia if he will fight WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney on December 4 in Las Vegas. “You’re gonna look real bad if you don’t accept this offer,” Hearn said. “The only way you wouldn’t do it is if you don’t believe you would beat him.”

Diaz responded via Twitter. “Imma fight Devin Haney in December y’all I promise. Like Ryan Garcia, he hasn’t been tested and I’ll give Devin his first L…and for Ryan Garcia hope you recover quick. Once I take out Devin I’m coming after you next!”

In a shocking upset, unheralded European super lightweight beltholder Sandor Martin (39-2, 13 KOs) won a ten round majority decision over four-division world champion Mikey Garcia (40-2 30 KOs) on Saturday night at the outdoor Chukchansi Park baseball stadium in Fresno, California. Mikey, who hadn’t fought for nearly 600 days, looked sluggish and never got untracked, while 25:1 underdog Martin was simply sharper. Scores were 95-95, 97-93, 97-93. The bout was fought at a 145lb catchweight.

In a return fight against the only opponent who has reached the decision, unbeaten super bantam Rafael “El General” Pedroza (12-0, 11 KOs), from San Miguelito Panama, scored a seventh round TKO win over Venezuelan Iwier Henriquez (11-14-1, 5 KOs).

Henriquez, who had knock Pedroza down in the first fight, did it again in round 2 but the Panamanian, ranked #14 by WBA, punished the Venezuelan so hard that his trainer decided not to let him fight the 8th round.

Pedroza, Henriquez fought in the undercard of the Poker of Aces show Promoted by Laguna Premium on Friday night.

Juarez dominates Valdez in a classic fight

In one of the best fights seen in Panama over the past few years, Mexican Salvador “Peloncito” Juarez (16-7-2, 4 KOs) pulled out the upset defeating the previously unbeaten Dominican Geraldo “Rigondeaux” Valdez (10-1, 8 KOs) to capture the WBC Latino super flyweight title over 10 rounds in an action-packed fight from start to finish to the likeness of the enthusiastic crowd present at the Roberto Duran Arena and the thousands watching the fight on TVMax in Panama.

The decision was unanimous (97-93, 97-93, 96-94) for the Mexican Juarez but the Dominican Valdez didn´t deceive but Peloncito was the better man.

Unbeaten super flyweight David “El General” Cuellar (20-0, 13 KOs) scored a brutal sixth round knockout over former world champion Moises Fuentes (25-7-1, 14 KOs) on Saturday at the Oasis Arena in Cancun, Mexico. Competitive fight until the 19-year-old Cuellar’s crushing left hook put Fuentes down and out. Time was 2:11. Fuentes was taken from the ring on a stretcher.

Unbeaten welterweight Taras Shelestyuk (19-0, 11 KOs), who captured a bronze medal for Ukraine at the 2012 London Olympics, scored a tenth round TKO over Ernesto Espana (31-3-1, 26 KOs). After nine workmanlike rounds, Shelestyuk got a referee’s stoppage with 15 seconds left in the bout. Espana complained about the stoppage.

Junior featherweight prospect Cristopher “Pollo” Lopez (14-0-1, 10 KOs) extended his winning streak to eight with a ten round unanimous decision against Franklin Manzanilla (20-7, 19 KOs). Two knockdowns. Scores were 95-93, 97-91, 98-89.

Unbeaten WBA #2, WBO #4, WBC #8 light flyweight Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (14-0, 10 KOs) scored a fourth round knockout over Jose Alejandro Burgos (18-5-1, 15 KOs) on Saturday’s Mikey-Martin undercard at the outdoor Chukchansi Park baseball stadium in Fresno, California. Two knockdowns ended it. Time was 1:23. Rodriguez was originally slated to challenge WBA champion Esteban Bermudez, but that bout fell through and he took it out on Burgos.

Unbeaten IBF #9 super featherweight Brock Jarvis (20-0, 18 KOs) survived a hellacious round two to win by fifth round TKO against Alejandro Frias (13-5-2, 6 KOs). Frias nearly had Jarvis out of there in round two, but Jarvis rebounded in round three and got the referee’s stoppage in round five. Time was 2:04. Hughie Fury, Eubank, Marshall stop foes early.

WBA #4, IBF #14 heavyweight Hughie Fury (26-3, 15 KOs) dominated Christian Hammer (26-8, 16 KOs) for five rounds on Saturday night at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, England. The bout ended when Hammer couldn’t continue after round five citing a bicep injury. Hughie is the cousin of WBC champion Tyson Fury.

WBA #1, WBC #3 middleweight Chris Eubank Jr (31-2, 22 KOs) punished Wanik Awdijan (28-2, 11 KOs) for five rounds. Awdijan couldn’t continue after round five citing a possible broken rib.

WBO female middleweight champion Savannah Marshall (11-0, 9 KOs) stopped previously unbeaten Lolita Muzeya (16-1, 8 KOs) in two rounds. A barrage of punches prompted a referee’s stoppage. After the fight, it was announced that Marshall and Claressa Shields will box separate opponents on the same card on December 11.

Unbeaten heavyweight Hemi Ahio (17-0, 13 KOs) annihilated Mohammad Ali Bayat Farid (17-3-1, 17 KOs) in two rounds on Saturday night at La Perle in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Ahio dropped Farid in round one and knocked him out in round two to claim the WBC Middle East title. Navarrete: I want the bigger fights

WBO featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete admitted that he was hurt in his unanimous decision over Joet Gonzalez on Friday night in San Diego.  “Without a doubt, I hurt him,” said Navarrete, “but every single time he came back, and he also hurt me. A couple of shots he landed hurt me during the fight.”

“It has been an exciting ride so far, and from now on, I want the bigger fights. These are the kind of fights I’m looking for, and without a doubt, I’d beat him in a rematch.”

Joet Gonzalez stated, “I thought I had it seven rounds to five, eight rounds to four. I was really surprised by that score of 118-110, I believe. But it is what it is, and I did my best.”
