The Excitement Behind The Scenes

The “behind the scenes” or backstage activity in any sport and entertainment event is fascinating for all fans.

Whoever has the opportunity to experience this type of experience, such as entering a dressing room before a fight, going down to the field before a game, being backstage before a concert, or any situation that is limited to very few, turns out to be something to be remembered for a lifetime.

Something that I have enjoyed many times is being able to give that experience to friends and strangers. I’ve had the opportunity to bring people into the locker room, also have them close to the action at weigh-in ceremonies, but my favorite moment is bringing kids into the ring after the fights. Unbeaten Japanese southpaw Junto Nakatani (21-0, 16 KOs), 112, impressively acquired the vacant WBO flyweight belt as he took the initiative from the outset, effectively battered WBO#1 Giemel Magramo (24-2, 20 KOs), 111.75, and finally finished him with a barrage of punches at 2:10 of the eighth round on Friday in Tokyo, Japan.

Nakatani, an elongated southpaw, had the Filipino slowing down with persistent body attacks and dropped him with furious combinations to the face and the belly for the count.

Step Into the Ring: Legal and Business Issues in Boxing

Miami Law and the Entertainment and Sports Law Society presented an interesting webinar titled “Step Into the Ring: Legal and Business Issues in Boxing” on Thursday night. An all-star panel included boxing attorney/manager Tony Gonzalez, Hall of Fame promoter Don King, boxing attorney Alejandro Brito, WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, and Boxeo Telemundo promoter Tuto Zabala Jr.

The panel discussed how the attorney, the promoter, the manager, the agent, and the WBA support the professional athletes in the boxing industry. Topics included promotional activities, drafting agreements, legal representation, managing the event, and more. The webinar was open to Miami Law students and the University of Miami community.

The knockout king of the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble, junior welterweight southpaw Elvis “The Dominican Kid” Rodriguez (10-0-1, 10 KOs) will fight an opponent to be named in an eight-rounder on the undercard of the November 14 world title doubleheader undercard featuring WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford against former welterweight world champion Kell Brook. The Impact Network has hired 18-year-old Zach Hirsch as a ringside reporter for its boxing telecasts. Hirsch, the son of famed boxing manager Scott Hirsch, is known for his sports handicapping skills. He has more than 350,000 followers on his @ipickwins Instagram account. WBA lightweight and super featherweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis is reportedly being sought by Baltimore police in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left several people injured. According to WJZ, the local CBS affiliate, at 1:53AM this morning a vehicle ran through a red light and struck another vehicle, then left the scene. According to the station, a source named Davis as the driver who ran the red light.

Heavyweight Alexander “The Great” Flores previewed his showdown against Luis “King Kong” Ortiz on a media conference call Tuesday. Flores and Ortiz headline an all-heavyweight FOX telecast this Saturday from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Benn-Formella is new Nov 21 DAZN headliner

With Alexander Povetkin vs. Dillian Whyte 2 being postponed due to Povetkin’s positive COVID-19 test, there was some concern that the whole event would be canceled. However, EC Promotion announced today that the card is still on with the new headliner being welterweight Conor Benn (16-0, 11 KOs) against former IBO titleholder Sebastian Formella (22-1, 10 KOs). The bout will be for the WBA Continental welterweight title and take place at the SSE Arena in Wembley, London.

Benn is coming off two knockout wins in 2019 (Jussi Koivula KO2 and Steve Jamoye KO4). Formella dropped a decision against two-time world champion Shawn Porter in August. Sky Sports will televise in the UK. DAZN will televise worldwide.

Undefeated 2016 Lithuanian Olympian welterweight Eimantas Stanionis (11-0, 8 KOs) scored a ninth round TKO over Justin DeLoach (19-5, 10 KOs) on Wednesday night at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Stanionis broke down DeLoach and dropped him twice in round nine. The bout was waved off after Stanionis’ follow-up barrage. Time was 2:53.

Unbeaten super welterweight Chordale Booker (16-0, 7 KOs) won an eight round split decision over Sonny Duversonne (11-2-2, 8 KOs). Scores were 77-75 Duversonne, 77-75, 77-75 Booker.

Estrada-Rungvisai III bout ordered by WBC

WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada will next fight mandatory challenger Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. The WBC ordered free negotiations to carry out this fight, promptly informing all parties involved. If no agreement can be reached within the next 30 days, the purse bid for the bout will be held on Tuesday, December 1.

In their first battle, Sor Rungvisai achieved a majority decision victory over el “Gallo” to successfully defend his title in early 2018. In their rematch last year, Estrada won a unanimous decision.

Unbeaten heavyweight Filip Hrgovic (11-0, 9 KOs) has vowed he’ll be the first man to stop 39-year-old Rydell Booker (26-3, 13 KOs) on Saturday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, live on DAZN in the USA and RTL in Croatia.

Can South African boxing recover?

Since the COVID-19 pandemic South Africa has only had a handful of boxing tournaments under strict and controlled conditions with no fans in attendance. However, prior to this boxing was at low ebb with limited coverage in the newspapers and television.

At one time there were weekly television shows on SATV and Supersport and most newspapers had a dedicated boxing reporter. WBA #12 Resendiz inks promotional pact

Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing, Aldo Mir of Boxing Major League, and Lourdes Saura of World Class Event Entertainment announced the signing of undefeated WBA #12 ranked middleweight Armando “Toro” Resendiz (11-0, 8 KOs) to a co-promotional contract.

Resendiz is originally from Compostela, Mexico, but is planning on training in Minneapolis, Minnesota at The Circle of Discipline Boxing Gym with trainer/co-manager Rodolfo Estevez, and alongside WBA interim welterweight world champion Jamal James and WBA interim champion David Morell, Jr.
