IBF#10 featherweight, Japanese southpaw Reiya Abe (20-3-1, 9 KOs), 127, had a tough time coping with previously unbeaten JBC#7 Ren Sasaki (10-1, 6 KOs), 126.5, but showed his ring experience in winning a unanimous nod (78-74 twice, 77-75) over eight speedy rounds on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan. It was an affair of the fast-moving southpaws. Reiya, who once entered the world top ten by upsetting then highly ranked compatriot Satoru Hosono in October 2017, failed to win the national 126-pound belt twice in a row since he battled to a grueling draw with defending champ Taiki Minamoto and lost to fast-rising Ryo Sagawa in a title bout for the vacant belt because of Taiki’s relinquishment. Abe, a good speedster, needs to improve his power. Continue reading “IBF #10 Abe defeats unbeaten Sasaki”

“Toño” Morán back on Telemundo Friday

Antonio Moran (4)
Photo: Pablo Lozano Reyes

Friday’s Boxeo Telemundo main event will be another edition of the classic boxing rivalry of Mexico vs Puerto Rico. WBA welterweight Fedecentro champion Antonio “Toño” Morán (25-4-1, 18 KOs) vs WBA jr. welterweight Fedecentro champion Emanuel “Pinky” Colón (17-1-1, 16 KOs) will be the third of four consecutive events aired on the network. The site will be the Osceola Heritage Park Events Center in Kissimmee, Florida. Bouts are in the quarantine fight zone with no fans.

It’s a quick return to the ring for Morán who stopped Luis Solis inside the distance just last month on the network. Moran was close to earning a world title fight not long ago. A win over Colón could position him for another world title run.

How was your preparation for your upcoming fight?

I took a little rest after the last fight but immediately got right back into a strong preparation for this fight.

How did it feel to get a knockout victory in your last fight coming in off of back to back tough fights prior?

It definitely has done a lot for my confidence heading into this fight.

What do you know about your opponent?

In the videos I have seen on him, he looks as strong as his record indicates.

How do you feel now having moved up from lightweight to super lightweight?

I have adapted well to the weight and feel strong.

How you do you feel you match up with the top fighters at 140?

I think that the division has talented champions and contenders. I feel that I match up well with the best in the division. I just have to remain disciplined and prepare properly prior.

Do you think your experience could be the difference in this upcoming fight?

I believe so. I feel that my experience will lead to a better overall performance leading me to victory.

What type of fight should the fans expect tonight?

I think we both respect each other and will use our intelligence in the ring. This is an important fight to both of our careers so I definitely see this leading to an exciting fight for the fans.

Two-plus years of bad blood ignited Wednesday evening when WBC Franchise/WBO/WBA lightweight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko and IBF kingpin Teofimo Lopez shared the stage for Wednesday’s press conference in advance of Saturday’s super fight on ESPN.

Lomachenko and Lopez had not been in the same room since last Dec.14, the night Lopez knocked out Richard Commey to win his world title. Shortly after that sensational knockout, Lomachenko entered the ring and welcomed Lopez to his club.

The lightweight champions sat 12 feet apart on a stage inside the ring. The tension never boiled over, but it was palpable. Continue reading “Loma-Lopez Final Press Conference”

Zeuge injured, De Carolis EBU title off

By Marco Bratusch

As it looks, the third encounter between former WBA secondary belt-holders Giovanni De Carolis (28-9-1, 13 KOs) and Tyron Zeuge (24-1-1, 14 KOs) is not going to happen. At least, not next. The pair, following a couple of postponements due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, was scheduled to fight for the vacant European title on November 27 in Germany, as Zeuge’s promoter Agon Sports won the relative bid last February offering a considerable sum of 96,233 Euros.

However, early this week the 28-year-old Zeuge claimed he got injured. Consequently, the EBU board have decided to go on soon, putting the German co-challenger “on hold” as next mandatory challenger for the winner, allowing him to recover. Continue reading “Zeuge injured, De Carolis EBU title off”

Unheralded and JBC unranked ex-amateur novice Rei Nakajima (4-0, no KO), 159.5, surprisingly scored an upset victory by a split decision (77-75 twice for him, 74-78) over ex-OPBF middleweight ruler Shinobu Charlie Hosokawa (12-6-1, 11 KOs), 159, over eight fast rounds on Friday in Tokyo, Japan.

Charlie, the younger brother of former Japanese national 140-pound titlist Valentine Hosokawa, both being from a Nigerian father and a Japanese mother, appeared for the first time—chiefly because of the coronavirus outbreak—since he forfeited his OPBF 160-pound belt to Kazuto Takesako last January. Wallin ready to step in for Fury rematch

Hearing reports that WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is looking for a December 2020 opponent, Sweden’s IBF #14-ranked Otto Wallin (21-1, 14 KOs) says that he’s the rightful choice for a rematch against the “Gypsy King.” Yesterday, Fury and his team stated they are moving on from the prospect of a trilogy fight with former champion Deontay Wilder and are looking for a late 2020 opponent.

Wallin and Fury met in a savage slugfest in December 2019, where Wallin opened two gruesome cuts around Fury’s right eye so severe that many experts assert Fury was extremely lucky to have avoided a TKO loss. Fury required close to 50 stitches and had to have a web mesh inserted surgically into the horrific wounds. Continue reading “Wallin ready to step in for Fury rematch”
