Jeff Horn hits Las Vegas

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn is in Las Vegas ahead of his June 9 clash with WBO mandatory contender Terrence Crawford.

“Early in my career my trainer Glenn Rushton sat me down and told me that I was no longer a fighter but an entertainer,” Horn explained to Grantlee Kieza of the Courier Mail. “I was now in the business of creating excitement and Glenn said he wanted me to be an all-action hero. That’s the fighting style I’ve adopted and the one that Crawford will face next week. The showman side comes from my high workrate and good boxing. I plan to upset Crawford’s style, upset his rhythm and not let him show those crafty skills he’s known for. Continue reading “Jeff Horn hits Las Vegas”

Cotto: Promoting more challenging than fighting

Future Hall of Fame boxer Miguel Cotto believes that, for him, promoting is even more challenging than fighting. The living legend retired last December with an incredible 41-6 (33 KOs) pro record, in which he became the only Puerto Rican to capture world titles in four different weights classes, light welterweight through middleweight. “We have been in the promoting business for more than 13 years, combining both roles (fighter and promoter),” Cotto said. “Now, we are able to give more attention to our fighters in terms of training.

“Promoting is more complex because there are challenges regarding every facet of an event. As a fighter, you concentrate solely on the fight, not all the details involved in promoting a successful event.” Continue reading “Cotto: Promoting more challenging than fighting”

Japanese super-feather champ Masaru Sueyoshi (18-1, 11 KOs), 129.75, successfully kept his national belt as he decked #1 contender Tsuyoshi Tojo (14-16-5, 3 KOs), 130, with a countering right in the opening session and pounded out a unanimous verdict (all 98-91) over ten heats on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan.

The upright stylist, making his second defense, acquired the vacant national belt by outscoring Ribo Takahata last October and halted Ken Osato in eight sessions of his initial defense this February.

Unbeaten Filipino prospect, 21-year-old Jayr Raquinel (10-0-1, 7 KOs), 112, impressively retained his OPBF flyweight belt by disposing of Japanese challenger, #13 Shun Kosaka (15-4, 4 KOs), 112, with a single southpaw left at 1:20 of the fourth round in Wakayama last Sunday (May 27). The hard-punching Raquinel, making his first defense, captured the OPBF throne when he surprisingly demolished defending titlist Keisuke Nakayama in nine hot rounds here this March. Raquinel is worth watching.

Lomachenko surgery successful

Vasiliy Lomachenko underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday morning at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder suffered during the second round of his May 12 bout against Jorge Linares. The surgery, performed by world-renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache, will preclude Lomachenko from fighting Aug. 25 as originally scheduled. Lomachenko will begin the recovery process immediately and is hopeful that he will defend his WBA lightweight title before the end of the year.

Said Dr. ElAttrache, “Vasiliy had the anticipated injuries in his right shoulder, resulting from a dislocation event that he sustained during his fight on May 12. In particular, he had an extensive labral tear, approximately 270 degrees with a small amount of cartilage damage and a bone impaction injury, all resulting in instability of the shoulder. He underwent an arthroscopic repair of the labrum as anticipated with no complications. Based on the result of the surgical repair, we are optimistic for an excellent prognosis and for him to return to competition at his previous level of performance.”

Ennis meets Arnaoutis in AC gateway fight

Story by John DiSanto – PhillyBoxingHistory.com

In Philly, the word on the street is that welterweight Jaron “Boots” Ennis, 19-0, 17 KOs, is boxing’s next big star, and some say the best to come along since Meldrick Taylor electrified the City of Brotherly Love by winning an Olympic Gold Medal at age 17, and world championships in two weight divisions as a professional. Big shoes to fill for sure. However, Ennis’ rise thus far suggests we should indeed believe the hype.

Ennis takes the next step in his budding career on Friday night in Atlantic City when he faces veteran “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis, 26-10-2, 13 KOs, in the 10-round main event at the Showboat Hotel & Casino.
