Dogboe and Magdaleno hint at rematch

By David Finger

Ever since winning the WBO 122-pound championship, undefeated Isaac Dogboe has been hinting at a unification fight in the near future. But in the last two days another war of words has erupted between the Ghanaian champion and the Mexican-American puncher whom he defeated to win the belt: Jessie Magdaleno.

“(W)here you at,” Magdaleno asked on his Instagram page. “(L)et’s get this rematch you and I know you can’t really beat me at my best just saying you know that!!!!!”

The challenge, and the implication that Dogboe couldn’t “really” beat Magdaleno, prompted an immediate response from the Ghanaian.

“Listen Ex-Champ!” Dogboe said on Instagram. “Don’t Flatter Yourself. I think you are a great fighter, but there’s a NEW CHAMP on the block.”

Dogboe then accepted Magdaleno’s challenge.

“YOU CAN BE MY FIRST DEFENSE.” Dogboe added (in all caps) on his Instagram post.

The first fight proved to be a barn burner with Dogboe coming up off the canvas to stop the undefeated champion in round eleven. However, although both sides seem keen on a rematch, there is a potential hiccup that could derail the fight: Jessie Magdaleno is not currently ranked by the WBO. After dropping the title there had been questions raised as it if Magdaleno would stay at 122-pounds or move up in weight. As a result, he was dropped from the latest WBO rankings, which were released last week. Although Magdaleno’s overture towards team Dogboe would indicate a desire to stay at 122-pounds, the fact that he has been entirely removed from the junior featherweight rankings could delay the rematch if he is still unranked when the June ratings are released.
