In an astonishing upset, unheralded Bruno Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) knocked out WBC #2, WBO #3, WBA #4, IBF #5 super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) on Saturday night at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. Mangier dropped Surace in round two with a left hook to the chin. It was all Munguia until Surace connected with a right hand that put Munguia on his back.
“I know that he is an excellent boxer. So, we worked on our counter punches,” Surace said. “He is a true warrior. I want to thank him for the opportunity. This was a big experience for me. Middleweight is my true weight class. But we’ll see if {a rematch} can happen.”
* * *
In the co-feature, WBC #1 super bantamweight Alan Picasso (31-0-1, 17 KOs) scored a third round knockout against late sub Yehison Cuello (13-3-1, 11 KOs), who replaced Picasso’s original opponent Isaac Sackey. Picasso took out Cuello with a brutal body shot. Time was 1:55.
Wow! Unbelievable!
Dang, kind of feels like justice after watching about a hundred punches land more than 6” below the belt. That was borderline insane. Every replay showed several punches landing deep into the Southern Hemisphere.
Good ! Tired of these over protected fighters just carried to championship fights . Mungia and promoters were just “working their way “to another scripted rematch .
Thats right! Obvious hype job for the Mexican fans to get behind and pay their money. They were able to get him a nice Canelo payday. The party is now over.
Truth padding his record and he ran into a real fighter.
I like this kind of results because somebody here said the French guy did not hit hard and he was set up to lose against Munguía ….so ….this is the way you learn about boxing
I already went through this years ago
What do you mean ‘I already went through this years ago?’
Carlos, I’ve been watching boxing for over 20 years and picked that up throughout the years. Can’t count anyone out.
Probably a bigger upset than Douglas over Tyson. I’m glad they showed the replay 20 times, it took me 19 to grasp that is was real. BOXING! THE GREATEST SPORT INVENTED BY MANKIND!
Bigger upset than Douglas v Tyson haha yeah I don’t think so mate.
I meant Douglas at least had a “punchers chance.” I didn’t mean historically!
Douglas was Tyson’s mandatory, he defeated a man that went the distance with Tyson in a final eliminator. He was slso a huge heavy. This geezer was an unknown middle with 5 knockouts to his name, try another excuse.
Great win and upset!!!
This is why Mungia , handlers , and promoters avoided so many top level fighters . They all knew . I am sure they will come up with some excuse – illness , weight drained , hand injury , unfocused fighting at home , etc , etc . He wasn’t going to fight any top level fighters until he got a “ rematch” . I am just glad it wasn’t Berlanga “another fraud” that beat mungia .
I think the refery counted to fast.! Munguia got up at 9.
8=)))
Yeah, and then he start to go down again. He was caught with a near perfect shot on the chin as he was leaning back. He got buzzed, fell backwards and his head bounced off the canvas.
He was done.
Yeah… he was done
Probably so. But you go back to fights like Gatti-Ward and how they fought back after being in serious trouble. I do agree it’s better to err on the side of protecting the fighter.
I think the referee thought Munguia was in too bad a shape to continue. I felt He could have let him continue a few more seconds but in real time it is a split second decision.
Great for the Frenchman! Hopefully a big money rematch in Paris! Yeah, we got an Eyeful tonight didn’t oui? I’ve been so burned out listening to that Mexican warrior bullshit! We are not Supermen dammit! Ah Ha!
Ooops! It wasn’t a sunny walk in the park.
When cherry-picking goes wrong.
Bwahahaha!!!!! You nailed it! Watch every mofo at 168 want to fight Munguia now.
They won’t wan’t to fight Surace.
I remember Munguia winning the junior middle weight crown but think he out weighed the guy Ali? by 15 plus lbs,! by fight time. This cherry picking and weight manipulation isn’t helping the sport.
This is easily upset of the decade. Munguia was stopped by Surace who was blown up ten pounds above his natural weight and only had four KO’s. I’m just curious who at Top Rank will be thrown under the bus for this obvious blunder.
Top Rank made the fight with Surace because they saw he had two draws in his first six fights, only 4 ko’s, and never fought above middleweight against any significant opposition. Nothing is guaranteed in boxing and not every unheralded opponent with a glossy record are just there for the payday. This is the best example of that.
WTF!!! I wonder if fans won any big money for this major upset??
Wow!!!!
5 kos? Jamie = BUM
Less of one than you.
Damn, I proposed that Munguia better fight a more well-known opponent.
But that formerly unknown opponent knocked out Munguia. Respect!
OMG. A guy with hardly any KOs puts Jaime away with one right hand!!!!
Not a big puncher, but one shot is all it takes. Ask Anthony Mundine about Sven Ottke, he floated like a butterfly but slept like a log
Yeah, as a German I saw that bout live on tv, that was a devastating knockout by Ottke, who was not known for his hard punching and numerous knockouts.
Sven ottke was a top eastern block champion, olympian(during the cold war) Mundine had no previous amateur fights, he went straight from Aussie football to pro boxing (following his father Tony) This was about his 14th pro fight i think. He was winning almost every round, but was still behind on the cards.
Ottke is a West-Berliner, and during that time Mundine was considered as a dangerous contender with many KOs.
That female commentator was more brutal than that right hand, Lord Jesus.
Yeah, like please contain your excitement, missy. Another DEI hire, for sure. Can’t wait to hear all the rebuttals.
She was 100 times better than the clowns DAZN hires
she was alot better than the spanish espn commentators. especially that one commentator yelling ” ay papa ” like 10 times. where did they find that commentator ?
Actually she has been good on all the broadcasts I have seen. She usually works with Ali’s grandson who has become a good analyst as well. Chris Algeri always good- usually does the Pro Box shows.
Ali’s grandson better be a good analyst.
If his name is Nico, it’s doubtful he will
ever reach the upper tier in his other career.
other excuses will include – mungia over looked him, it was a “lucky punch ” , ref. shouldn’t have stopped it, ref. counted too fast, the gloves, the hand wraps , over or under training , the altitude , fought too many times this year, etc , etc,. Lets see which ones they choose.
You see when keep pick package boxer they give you big surprise
Munguia was always protected by their management by picking low opposition most of his career. His luck only ran for so long! Surace vs berlanga, should a good be next if it happens!
He is human. It happens. Right shot, right time.
I looked up the guys record. Only 5 kos. However, most of his fights were six rounders. So obviously he has some pop, but the guy isn’t a brawler and doesn’t throw many punches…thus hard to Ko anyone with that temperament in a six rounder. Anyone can be knocked out. Probably a fluke, but Canelo vs Brunelo next in France.
Kinda like when Oliver McCall knocked out Lennox Lewis. Fluke?
I was never impressed with Munguia, so I’m not entirely surprised this happened. Kudos to Surace for hanging in there after getting hurt, and pulling off this upset. What a warrior!
Munguia stepped straight back with his hands down and caught the right hand. It happens. Surace landed the right shot at the right time. Munguia is a good fighter, not great but he lost focus it’s as simple as that.
I agree. Munguia will get tarred in the press, but he actually looked pretty good before making his fatal error. I thought he was allowed to punch low far too frequently without any warning. He’s still a good fighter, but you can make mistakes like backing out of the pocket off-balance with your hands down. Sometimes one bad mistake is all it takes.
It was like clockwork. He stepped straight back hands well below his chin then boom, game over. Just like that! Pittsburgh kid is right that’s why we watch boxing!
That folks is exactly why we watch boxing.
It’s boxing sheet happens. But also he was never that good. A hype machine. I still believe Canelo could of destroyed him but chose to help him m instead to carry the torch down the road
Wow!! Only 5 kos to his name, he was in his zone I guess!!
Hope SURACE gets the rematch and gets PAID!!!!! I have never been a big fan of Munguia! Flat footed, slow, at times telegraph’s his shots, poor fundamentals and IMO not as big of a puncher as they make him to be!! Has definitely been protected and I always believed that @60 Charlo would have beat him and Benavidez would have ANNIHILATED HIM!! Oh surely PLANT would’ve knocked him out as well
Munguia has shitty technique. Why should anyone of us be surprised that he got KTFO by a dude with only 4 KOs on his resume, with a record replete with UBER drivers.
And the fact that Canelo will only fight technically inept boxers like Munguia & Edgar Berlanga, with twin results, just goes to show how much on the back 9 Canelo is.
So what are the Munguia fans going to do about this? Take Xanax. Shave their heads. Get sterilized. See Wicked a trillion times. Commit a serious crime, then get arrested at a McDonald’s 2 states away.
Which Canelo do you speak of Le- KAREN?
The same one that fought Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley & Floyd Mayweather?
All 3 Hall of Fame boxers BTW..
He is not really a legit 168 pounder. He is really a blown up welter weight with a boatload of talent & guts. He is as UNDERSIZED for the super Middle weight division, as Benavidez is OVER-SIZED for that weight division
Your argument is as preposterous as a Kamala supporter after the elections results. Canelo is on the back 9. And once Canelo faces real competition, Canelo is going to get KTFO.
Ha!
You know as much about politics as you know about boxing, BUT
you R funny which goes a long way in this dumpster fire world we are living in right now. Time waits 4 no one. Saul is obviously on the tail end of his career, that SHOULD go without saying. BTW – the female commentator did a more than decent job, much better than many
TC, go home and get your shine box.
Man………..why you have to bring up Luigi?
Home boy was trying to lay low and enjoy his happy meal. Then some fast food worker
called the FBI to get a junior g-man badge.
FBI=Forever Bothering Italians.
Alvin Bragg & Luigi are going to go to prison, and get stacked in the ass by Tyrone & Bubba. They will both be sucking dicks and taking it up the ass.
Go McDonald’s Go.
Kash Patel will take care of both of them.
Just like Dorothy Gale will deal with The Wicked Witch with her water & ICE.
The French kid is not a nobody anymore
Boy he really nailed him. He took a quick step to the right, turned and fired before Munguia recovered.
I think there’s quite a bit of over reaction on this fight. Munguia’s career is far from over. He just got caught with a perfect shot. The most surprising part is Surace isn’t a big puncher and Munguia has shown a good chin.
Kudos to Surace, he is one tough guy and earned this win.
Surace is not gonna be any threat to anyone after this fight regardless this win. Munguia was never anything special. He is a very sloppy and no defense boxer.
“Everyday the bucket goes to the well, one day the bottom will fall out “.This guy kept fighting a lot of non-rated guys after almost 50 fights he was now koed by a middle with 5 knockout. The excuses will be coming. Maybe he forgot his “Mex-meat ” dosage..
A shocker maybe Jaime didn’t train properly.
A guy with 4 kos did what Canelo could not
I sat ringside when Munguia fought Derevyanchenko, and thought the Ukrainian may have outfought him. It was also so obvious Canelo carried the Tijuana fighter; Canelo took it easy on his fellow Mexican. With that said, I’d still love to see a Munguia vs. Caleb Plant matchup.
I said it before, every time I see Munguía and Berlanga it looks like it’s just a matter of time. Losing to canelo doesn’t count because we knew they would lose but it looks like that matter of time caught up to Munguía.
WHOA!!! Did not see that coming!!
Frenchie, you went to Mexico to LOSE.What´s wrong with you ?
Sorry, I forgot to read the script…
