More on Canelo/DAZN deal

Canelo Alvarez has signed the richest athlete contract in sports history. The 11-fight DAZN deal starts December 15 when Canelo faces Rocky Fielding at Madison Square Garden.

Golden Boy Promotions will present up to 10 additional fight nights per year on DAZN beginning in early 2019.

The Golden Boy deal is separate from the Matchroom Boxing pact with DAZN providing 32 boxing events per year. DAZN also offers Season 2 of the World Boxing Super Series.

The deal marks a major change in the boxing landscape, where its biggest stars traditionally fought on pay-per-view.

DAZN Group Executive Chairman John Skipper: “By bringing Canelo’s fights to DAZN, we will turn his pay-per-view success into a growth engine for subscribers – a truly transformational moment for our business and the entire industry.”

That said, we’re still not done with pay-per-view. Showtime has the December 1 Wilder-Fury PPV and ESPN also has boxing PPVs in its plans.

The duo have also confirmed ‘Del Boy’ is no more. Under Haye’s complete guidance, Derek has overhauled his approach to his professional career. With London his hometown currently proving to be the epicenter of heavyweight boxing, Derek ‘WAR’ Chisora finally means business, this is WAR.

The two share a colorful and well-documented history which began on a night of mayhem in Munich back in 2012. Fists flew, camera tripods were wielded and threats were issued. The torch paper to one of British boxing’s most notable rivalries was well and truly lit. As previously reported, Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) received his WBC middleweight world title Monday at Museo Soumaya in Mexico City.

Canelo Alvarez: “I want to thank everyone for their support during the good times and the bad. It was a tough year for me. I would never do anything to blemish my career, but I’m grateful to all those who were there with me. I’m going to represent the WBC from here on. They’ve been my family since the beginning. It’s a great responsibility to be a Mexican world champion. But I take that responsibility because I know I’m a determined and disciplined fighter. I honor every fighter who has fought at Madison Square Garden, but I’m going to make my own story. This is another chapter in my legacy.

I am so proud he is representing the WBC once again.”

Farmer ready to do it big or not at all

By John DiSanto – PhillyBoxingHistory.com

For years, when Tevin Farmer woke up every morning, the first thought on his mind was his goal to become a world champion. It was like an instinct. It came before breakfast, before he put his feet on the floor, and before he said his first words of the day. It was automatic. In his mind, he visualized that goal and saw himself with a championship belt wrapped around his waist.

Photo: Darryl Cobb Jr. – dcobbjr.com

On August 3rd, that goal came to be. Farmer made a trip to Australia and returned home with the IBF junior lightweight title, following a dominant win over Billy Dib. After seven years as a pro, all of his hard work had paid off and he had finally achieved his long-standing goal.

So how did it feel when Tevin woke up after becoming champ?

“At first, it was regular,” Farmer said. “You kind of get used to that feeling. It becomes normal. So when you become champion that feeling is still on you, but now it’s just starting to wear off.”

And for world champion Tevin Farmer, 26-4-1, 5 KOs, 1 NC, things are starting to change. With that belt in his possession, everything is new for him, and he needs new goals and new things to visualize. On Saturday night (October 20), for the first time, Tevin Farmer will enter a boxing ring as a world champion when he makes his first title defense against Belfast’s James Tennyson, 22-2, 18 KOs, at the TD Garden in Boston. The bout will be streamed live by DAZN. Continue reading “Farmer ready to do it big or not at all”
