Promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes Floyd Mayweather is angling for a rematch with Canelo Alvarez — claiming he’s a broke fraud who desperately needs a money fight to stay afloat. The head of Golden Boy Promotions was celebrating the record-breaking $365-MILLION contract he made for Canelo Alvarez … when we asked about his rekindled beef with Floyd.
As we previously reported, Floyd dug up an old photo of Oscar on Thursday and blasted him on social media saying some pretty offensive stuff. But, Oscar didn’t seem too bothered at The Belmont restaurant Thursday night — saying Floyd is simply trying to ruin Canelo’s moment because he’s a jealous, bitter man. In the main event of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, Jason Quigley (15-0, 11 KOs) retained his NABF middleweight title with an entertaining ten-round decision over game but faded former welterweight title challenger Freddy Hernandez (34-10, 22 KOs). Scores for the bout were 98-92, 98-92, 99-91.
In some respects, this was a disappointing performance by Quigley, who was never in any danger of losing, but was forced to go ten hard rounds with a 39-year old who was 4-7 in his last 11 fights coming in, with three of those seven losses by knockout. Nevertheless, Quigley controlled the action mainly behind his jab, relying almost exclusively on it in the early rounds, circling away from Hernandez and sticking him repeatedly as the well-seasoned veteran came forward. WBC, WBA middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) just signed the most lucrative deal in all of sports, but WBA super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs) plans to send Canelo’s stock crashing down on December 15 in Madison Square Garden.
“I went to Germany and fought for the world title,” said Rocky. “People wrote me off and didn’t give me a chance. But I won the world title and it only took me five rounds. I worked my whole life to be on the biggest stages, and now I’m fighting the biggest name in the sport at Madison Square Garden. It is every fighter’s dream. I know Canelo is an elite fighter, but I’m going in there as a champion to defend my title and walk away with the victory.”
Fielding’s trainer Janie Moore added, “[Rocky] has all the attributes to give Canelo problems. He has had setbacks, but they have taken him to where he is today. We will walk away with the victory on December 15.”
