Beterbiev KOs Gvozdyk, unifies IBF/WBC LH titles

By Kurt Wolfheimer at ringside

In a spectacular light heavyweight world title unification showdown, IBF champion Artur Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs) scored a tenth round KO against WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk (17-1, 14 KOs) on Friday night before 3,283 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.

Gyozdykbeterbiev 8

Beterbiev was credited with a knockdown at the end of round one, but it was overruled as a push after an instant replay review. Both fighters landed big shots as the bout progressed. The relentless Beterbiev had Gvozdyk hurt and holding on in round nine. Gvozdyk finally took a knee in round ten. Beterbiev then battered him to the canvas two more times in the round to end it! Time was 2:49.

Beterbiev was behind on two of the three scorecards at the time of the stoppage! After nine rounds, judges had it 87-84 Gvozdyk (John McKaie), 86-85 Gvozdyk (Ron McNair), and 87-83 Beterbiev (John Poturaj).

“For this moment, it’s my most important fight,” said Beterbiev afterward. “I had big work to prepare for this fight.”

Keys to victory? “I think you have to ask my coaches about that. I have three coaches. We work in the gym. We work hard, and we have some targets. My first target, second target and other one comes soon.”

“It doesn’t matter {who I fight next.} Anyone. I’m focused on the title, not on the name.” Continue reading “Beterbiev KOs Gvozdyk, unifies IBF/WBC LH titles”

Undercard Results from Philadelphia

By Kurt Wolfheimer at ringside

The co-feature of the eight bout card promoted by Top Rank with Peltz Boxing IBF number one ranked welterweight contender Kudratillo “The Punisher”Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9 KOs) remained undefeated in a fight that went to the scorecards in the tenth and final round when former WBA welterweight champion Luis Collazo (39-8, 20 KOs) who was behind on the scorecards received a brutal cut over the right eye from an accidental headbutt.

Abdudukakhorov fought well early as lured Collazo in and landed counter combinations in the second round. Colazzo continued to press the attack and started to find his range in the third round. It became a chess match in the fourth and fifth rounds. Collazo used his elusiveness to force Abdukakhorov to miss on several combinations, but the ones that landed in the fifth round slowed the advances. Collazo seemed to injure his left arm, but his experience allowed to take the seventh round as he worked the inside. Collazo was cut over the left eye that was opened up from counters from the native of Uzbekistan. Collazo shook his left arm in between rounds to loosen up the injured arm. Collazo was following Abdukakhorov and basically barely throwing his injured left arm as the fight wore on in the ninth. In the tenth both fighters banged heads in a clinch which opened a huge cut over the right eye of Collazo, which was deemed to dangerous to continue, sending the fight to the scorecards. All three judges saw the fight for Kudratillo Abdukakhorov by scores of 97-93, 98-92 and 99-91 for the unanimous decision victory. Continue reading “Undercard Results from Philadelphia”

Benavides-Yildirim mandatory bout confirmed

The World Boxing Council has closed its Clean Boxing Program’s Results Management process concerning Avni Yildirim’s adverse finding related to a recent out-of-competition anti-doping test. That process included a thorough scientific investigation and evaluation, with the participation of independent experts.

That investigation and subsequent evaluation concluded that Yildirim did not ingest or became exposed to a banned substance knowledgeably or with a performance enhancement intention. Instead, Yildirim unintentionally and inadvertently became exposed to a substance as part of a muscular inflammation therapy he received in Germany which was fully confirmed during the investigation. Credible evidence was presented that the source of the banned substance was a specific contaminated product that was administered to Yildirim.
