Ex-Japanese 115lb champ Nakagawa, Nagata win

By Joe Koizumi

Hard-punching southpaw, former Japanese 115-pound champ Kenta Nakagawa (16-3-1, 11 KOs), 115, decked his third victory since his title forfeiture to his ex-high school classmate Ryuichi Funai (now world rated by all the organizations) in March of the previous year, as he scored a couple of knockdowns and pounded out a shutout decision (all 80-69) over Kittipong Jareonroy (reportedly 10-4, 3 KOs), 113.75, over eight rounds on Friday in Tokyo, Japan.

Photo: Boxing Beat

When Nakagawa, an upright southpaw, floored the Thailander at first with a straight left to the liver, and again with a flurry of punches in the third, it looked a matter of time for the audience to watch a short affair soon. The hard-hitting Japanese attempted to finish him with solid combinations, but Kittipong, from the fourth on, inexplicably became a different boxer—very tough and durable—from what he was in the first three sessions. Whyte defends the WBC silver title he won against Robert Helenius in October, landing the number one spot in the WBC into the bargain.

NSAC suspends Canelo pending hearing

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has placed Canelo Alvarez under “temporary” suspension for twice testing positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol. Canelo must appear before the commission on April 10 to explain himself. The move came two weeks after Alvarez’ adverse test results became known, and days after middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin harshly condemned the NSAC.

Canelo maintains the adverse test result was due to tainted meat he ingested while training in Mexico. Golovkin accuses Canelo of being a long-term drug cheat who has traces of injections.

Golovkin vs. Canelo are due to meet in a high stakes May 5 mega-rematch at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

While rumors of a June 9th rescheduled date for the WBO welterweight world title clash between Terence Crawford and Jeff Horn, I waited for a concrete 100% on-the-record answer from Crawford’s manager/trainer Brian “BoMac” McIntyre.

BoMac stated, “Yes the working date is June 9th, still finalizing a couple things we are supposed to have an official announcement soon.”

BoMac: “Listen, everybody got all worked up about the hand. My fighter is as tough as they come. We were in the gym the next week. Parker aims to fulfill Wilder’s prediction

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Sportsbooks have established WBA, IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua as an 8:1 betting favorite over WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker when they collide in Cardiff, Wales on March 31. However, the Parker team prefers the view of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder over that of the betting houses.

Wilder is on the record saying Parker “has a 100 percent chance of winning. He has to be smart and stick to the game plan. In this ring it’s not about how much a person weighs, or about how big a person’s muscles is – it’s about heart, that dog that he’s going to bring to the fight.”
