May 5

By Mauricio Sulaimán
President of the WBC – Son of José Sulaimán

Today, absolutely all Mexicans know the meaning of the celebration of May 5, for as we know, it’s the Battle of Puebla, the defense of our territory against the French invasion.

Yes, it was the boxing cards in Las Vegas that gave this the dimension of a national holiday, and for more than 30 years the most important fights in the world have been taking place on the weekend close to this date and also that of September 16.

Immigrants from Mexico started this tradition of celebrating May 5 with important fights, mainly in California and Texas – Puas Olivares, Carlos Zarate and Salvador Sanchez, plus many more.

It was in the 90s when May 5 and September 16 became a real fixture for the promoters and the largest television networks, establishing their annual calendar based on those two weekends. Continue reading “May 5”

Tyson offered $1 million to fight in Australia

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has been offered $1 million to fight Aussie heavyweights Paul Gallen, Barry Hall or Sonny Bill Williams in Australia by Melbourne-based promoter Brian Amatruda.

“I’d hold it at Melbourne Arena where we’d get over 10,000 or even Princes Park where they got 30,000 for Jeff Fenech versus Azumah Nelson,” Amatruda said to Daily Mail. “He might be 53 years old but he’s still a huge name and any of those blokes Hall, Gallen or Sonny Bill would jump at the chance to get into the ring with him. I’d make it part of a card with a world title fight for Tayla (Harris) on it. It would be enormous. Not just a fight, it would be an event!”

Andrade: I would bust up Billy Joe

Demetrius Andrade hopes to finally get to face bitter rival Billy Joe Saunders when boxing returns – and told Matchroom Boxing’s Podcast ‘The Lockdown Tapes’ that he would ‘bust up’ the Brit if they clashed.

Andrade (29-0 18 KOs) was due to face Saunders in October 2018 for the Londoner’s WBO crown but the Briton failed a drugs test and subsequently relinquished the title.

“I was willing to fight Billy Joe after a 15 month lay-off but that didn’t happen and I am willing to fight him again,” said Andrade. “If I can’t get Canelo then it’s Billy Joe or Charlo at 160. At 168 we’ve got Callum Smith. I would bust Billy Joe Saunders up at 160 or 168, that’s not a problem. Continue reading “Andrade: I would bust up Billy Joe”

Boxing is coming back in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – as previously announced – on May 30th. WBA #7, WBC #14, super flyweight Nolberto”Meneito” Jimenez ( 29-9-5, 16 KOs), will defend his belt against countryman Eliezer Aquino (21-4-1, 14 KOs).

Both men have already faced each other in a shoot-out in 2013 that ended in a technical draw in 5 rounds. This rematch between unorthodox stylist Jimenez and slugger Aquino should be a dandy as there is no love lost between the two boxers. Continue reading “Card is a go in Santo Domingo on May 30”

Left Brain Judges vs. Right Brain Spectators

Courtesy WBC

One of the realities of boxing that sometimes cause widespread dispute is the occasional decision by judges that goes against the overwhelming opinion of fans, writers and spectators. Without naming specific fights that were “controversial” in this way, there may be a legitimate explanation for why this occurs from time to time.

Brain800

Everything we do as humans is controlled by our brains. Our human brains are the command center that dictates all aspects of our lives from when we get hungry to what music we listen to to what we watch. That being said, that same human brain of ours is also key when we watch boxing. Continue reading “Left Brain Judges vs. Right Brain Spectators”
