Warren waiting for green light to resume boxing

Hall-of-Fame Promoter Frank Warren has today gone public with his worry that boxing could “lose a lot of young fighters” if the sport doesn’t resume in the coming months. “We need to get on,” said Warren. “As far as boxing is concerned, if we don’t, I think we’re going to lose a lot of young fighters…It’s not like they can even train properly. They can’t get into gyms, they can’t spar.”

Accepting the need for a ‘new normal’, Warren acknowledged that financial gain for promoters will be impossible over the coming months but insisted it is imperative for the fighters and the sport itself that action is resumed. Continue reading “Warren waiting for green light to resume boxing”

Felix Sturm gets three year jail sentence

A court in Cologne, Germany, has sentenced former middleweight and super middleweight world champion Felix Sturm to a three year prison term on tax evasion charges. Sturm was found guilty of trying to hide funds in Switzerland to dodge about one million Euros in taxes for the years 2008.

He was also convicted of doping for his 2016 world title fight against Fedor Chudinov. The 41-year-old Sturm denied the charge and suggested that he was affected by tainted meat. Authorities didn’t buy it, saying the substance “stanozolol” is not used in animals as clenbuterol is.

Sturm will get credit for eight months already served. He had been planning a comeback fight against Arthur Abraham.

Less activity in 1918 -1919 due to WWI, pandemic

By Joe Koizumi

Boxing has almost disappeared all over the world. Reviewing the numbers of previous world title bouts in respective calendar years, this observer saw the least active years in 1918 through 1919 caused by World War I (which broke out in July 1914 and came to an end in November 1918) and the pandemic called “Spanish Flu” (lasting from January 1918 to December 1920; actually no relation to Spain). The H1N1 pandemic had some 500 million people infected, approximately a quarter of the world population at that time, with some 50 million deaths worldwide and about 675,000 passing in the US. Even in Japan of the Far East, we pitifully had 23 million infected through the first and second waves of the pandemic.

The New York Times, on October 13, 1918 (Section E, Page 7), described the influenza pandemic, “Boxing in the East is now at a standstill, because of the epidemic of Spanish influenza. Promoters in Philadelphia, Boston and New Jersey, in compliance with requests issued by their different Health Departments, have agreed to close up shop. How long the sport will be idle remains to be seen, but it is positive that no matches of any importance will be undertaken while the epidemic continues.”

A similar disastrous situation as today happened some one hundred years ago. Continue reading “Less activity in 1918 -1919 due to WWI, pandemic”

WBC Talks: Brace yourself for boxing greats

By Mauricio Sulaimán
WBC President – Son of José Sulaimán

I had the great pleasure of holding talks, one on one, with two all-time Boxing Greats … Julio César Chávez and Sugar Ray Leonard … during the dynamics called WBC Talks, which are done through the WBC University with the support from LiberQuaré.

These are informal conversations, totally relaxed, and in which we simply remember the courses, passages and routes of their lives inside and outside of the ring.

We have selected photographs that, when put on screen, generate great interest and nostalgia in our champions, facilitating the flow of the conversation, opening the floodgates of memories and pride of these great champions. Continue reading “WBC Talks: Brace yourself for boxing greats”
