Spence: I should’ve lost my life that night

In one of the first interviews since his violent car accident from October 2019, unified WBC/IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. talks about the accident, his life in quarantine, his impending return to the ring and his ideal future opponents on Showtime’s “All the Smoke” show.

On training in quarantine…

“This pandemic really been helping me out a lot. Basically recovery, taking my time and getting back. I’m already back, I’m 100%…No restrictions in my training except sparring. I can’t spar yet because I got my teeth knocked out and they put three posts in my mouth. Once they heal, I get my permanent teeth and then I’ll be able to spar.”

On the effects of his car accident…

“I don’t even remember being in the hospital. The only thing I remember is being at home, three weeks later…I didn’t break any bones, no fractures, no anything…I should’ve lost my life that night.”

On Floyd Mayweather…

“100% focused, in my prime, I think I would beat Floyd … He’s very mentally tough. I would cut him off, I would use my jab…throw combinations, work the body and then work the head… I’d try to break him down physically, because I know I’m not gonna break him down mentally.”

What he learned from his car accident…

“Don’t take anything for granted. Around that time, I was taking a lot of stuff for granted. I think I was headed down that way anyway. I was headed down that path to destruction anyway. I was taking a lot of stuff for granted. It was showing…I was already heading to destruction I think and that car accident was eye-opening for me.”

  • I like Spence in today’s fight game but he would NEVER beat Floyd Mayweather.

    • I THINK FLOYD LOST A STEP HERE BUT NOW BECAUSE HE’S NOT THAT GOOD… HE IS BUT WHEN YOU FIGHT A OPEN CAGE GUY THAT KINDS OF SCREAMS TO ME HE’S LOST A STEP… CAN HE BEAT ERROL NOW PROBABLY MAYBE… NOT A FIGHT I’D MAKE A BET ON… LIKE ERROL WAS SAYING HE’D ATTACK THE BODY FIRST AND THAT’S WHAT MAYWEATHER NEEDS TO WIN THEM LEGS… I DON’T KNOW 50 50 WOULD BE MY GUESS… MANY FIGHTERS HAVE COME BACK AND IT WAS ONE FIGHT TO MANY… PERSOANLLY I HOPE FLOYD STAYS RETIRED… HE’S GOT NOTHING TO PROVE

      • I still think Floyd beats Errol but if he does he will never get credit for it. they would blame it on the accident so its pointless.

  • In your prime you beat Floyd Mayweather? So why are you avoiding Crawford as if he was God?

  • The biggest takeaway Spence should understand is the value in wearing a seatbelt. Spence said in his interview he had three [dental] posts placed and waiting for them to heal. He must have been banged so hard three natural teeth were popped out and now he will be getting three dental implants. Glad he can afford them. They generally run $3000-4000 each.

Sorry Spence, but Mayweather’s defense and counter punching would have had you so confused and dazed. Mayweather would have won on points fighting you.

    • I like Spence but i agree after 2 rounds he will look like the rest of Floyds opponents like a deer in headlights. This is good for him much more time to recover heal up and make a proper comeback.

    • Hey Scooby, you do know in sparring that Spence whooped him so bad Floyd got embarrassed and kicked him out of the gym right?

  • 2ND COMMENT… IN HIS PRIME FLOYD WOULD HIM LOOK FOOLISH FOR EVEN TRYING/… HE BEATS SPENCE EASY… SPENCE IS TOUGH SO HE’D LAST THE 12 ROUNDS…. I’D CALL IT 10 ROUNDS TO TWO IN FLOYD’S FAVOR….

  • Spence, I firmly believe can be great!!! Spence has been blessed with a second chance to pursue what he Love’s doing best! We have lost great boxers in which are fathers, brothers, sons and friends to a bad decision at hand. Go out and be Great!!! I don’t see anyone in his division to be much of a problem. However, Crawford was running from Spence before the horrible accident, I would not be surprised of Crawford now asking for the fight. Spence will need two fights to be 100%. I hope Spence can use his platform and be the voice for boxing and/or athletes in regards to the high life of fortune and accolades can be lost with a bad decision making, how invisibility does not exist. I see Spence unifying the division. Be great Spence!!

  • I seriously doubt if he would beat Floyd if they were both in their primes, but he is Floyd’s equal in avoiding opponents that he is not sure that he can beat. Instead of emulating Floyd, perhaps Spence should try to act more like Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, and Duran and actually show some honor and integrity and fight Crawford instead of being a coward and waiting for him to get old.

    • Never understood people sitting behind keyboards to call a world class professional fighter a coward. The same fighters who fought the best avail competition to make and fight on an Olympic team is now cowards because the fight you wanted to see didnt happen?

      • Yep, we are all keyboard warriors and it amazes me some of the stuff I read myself with all the pseudo-testosterone, know-it-all attitudes, finger-pointing, and of course, great posts we all can learn from. What a mixed bag!!!!!!!!!

  • — TUE 51-0 ducked Manny for 6 years, so he’d duck Spence for 8, and if he fought him, a huge IF, it’d be his stock in trade typical TBA short notice Vegas fight with Spence missing his teeth…only in boxing!

  • Spence man what a talent no way he beats Mayweather prime vs prime Unfortunately he may never be the same after suffering from a concussion like he did. In fact If he fight a Thurman Or A Pacquioa next I would bet against . He may be fine but you are only allowed hits to the head.

  • Prime vs Prime, Floyd cleary beat Spence every day of the week

  • Errol Spence , if you feel like you are strong enough to beat Floyd, why can you fight the Man of Nebraska ? You know who I am talking about . Terence Crawford.

  • To call Errol Spence out after a serious car accident is no better than being an avoider. Crawford is a special boxer. You simply don’t get in the ring not fully prepared if you want to beat Crawford. I would say Errol Spence needs three fights before Crawford. The first one can be a warm up but the following two must be very competitive. Then Crawford.

  • Spence obviously has tom TBI. He barely got by Porter so how is he going to beat Floyd. He better we worried about Crawford.
