Still no date for the reopening of Las Vegas casinos, but Top Rank is hoping to stage a June 9 no-spectator card at MGM Grand featuring Shakur Stevenson. An ESPN platform would televise. This is pending approval from the Nevada Commission.

Promoter Eddie Hearn says Anthony Joshua’s WBA/IBF/WBO heavyweight title defense against Kubrat Pulev will not happen behind closed doors so if arena shows aren’t allowed in the U.K. by August, the bout could wind up in the Middle East, China, or Croatia.

Arum: Mike Tyson could do a lot of PPV

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum thinks an exhibition charity bout between Mike Tyson and WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury could do well on pay-per-view. “I think it could do a lot of pay-per-view business,” Arum told Deadspin. “But would I want to bet on it by putting up my own money? No way. Millions of people are unemployed. Would they be willing to spend $80 to watch a 50-year-old man perform in the ring? I have my doubts. Without the backing of a site fee, I don’t think it’s possible.

“I would entertain the idea of Tyson Fury fighting an exhibition against Tyson if the money was going to a legitimate charity,” Arum said. “I wouldn’t finance it. I would put sweat equity into it. I think it would be good for Tyson.”

WBC Clean Boxing program resumes testing

The World Boxing Council and the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association have announced the resumption of anti-doping testing activities under the WBC Clean Boxing Program. Last February, the WBC CBP temporarily suspended testing activities due to the world Covid-19 pandemic.

All eligible boxers under the WBC CBP (top 15 in the last WBC world ratings, current WBC Champions and boxers slated to fight for a WBC championship) could be subject to random anti-doping testing. VADA has designed a sample collection protocol together with its collection arm Clearidium, that strictly adheres to the most stringent safety procedures available, in full compliance with any applicable rules enacted in the jurisdiction where the sample collection will take place in light of the Covid-19 world situation. Hearn: Tyson can make quite a lot of money

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Promoter Eddie Hearn has commented on former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson possibly making a comeback at age 53.

“I would like to see it,” Hearn told British Boxing TV. “But I kind of feel like, and I know people will say ‘Well, you did the YouTube fight with KSI,’ but is it a bit irresponsible to let a 53-year-old legend get back in the ring? I don’t know. He looks pretty dangerous, but I think it’s just the fascination of could he actually go in at 53 and do some damage in the division? Maybe, maybe not. Still no fight dates announced by the major promoters. A lot of it depends on the various commissions giving approval.
—–
Top Rank and Zanfer are talking about being the first out of the gate in June. Golden Boy, PBC, Matchroom and Queensbury are eyeing July. In Germany, the Bundesliga will be the first of Europe’s major soccer leagues to return on May 16. Hopefully this means Team Sauerland and SES will get the green light soon. Nothing new on the rescheduled WBSS cruiser final. Boxing in Japan is closed until at least July.

Florida is open for business with three UFC shows in one week, but no takers from the sweet science so far. TR and GB seem more comfortable staying in Nevada, Texas and California. With its home base in Brooklyn not opening anytime soon, PBC seems a natural for the Sunshine State.

Saturday’s UFC PPV reportedly had 700,000+ buys.

Maniatis: Petalcorin wants rematch with Shiro

WBC # 14 light flyweight Randy Petalcorin is chasing a rematch with WBC light flyweight champion Ken Shiro, who defeated the former world champion in December. “Randy had four weeks to get ready and to travel to Japan and fight the best light flyweight in the world, Ken Shiro. It was a big challenge that we could not knock back a chance of a lifetime for Petalcorin to fight for a WBC world title,” said co-manager Peter Maniatis.

Boxing can use UFC as a blueprint

By Karl Freitag

On Saturday night at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, UFC staged a successful pay-per-view show. This was the first major combat sports event in the United States since March. The show took place with no fans in attendance and all fighters, officials, production crew, and anyone else involved had to pass multiple temperature checks, an antibody test, and a nasal-swab test. UFC has shows scheduled for May 13 and May 16 at the same venue.

Florida has been open to hosting boxing events as long as there are no spectators in attendance, which unfortunately sidelines the state’s vibrant club show circuit. But major promoters with TV dates have so far been gun-shy about coming to the Sunshine State.

With UFC’s blueprint, we hope the pugilistic lockdown will end soon as the world’s fight fans suffer through another weekend without boxing.

Foreman: Tyson could be a top contender

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Former two-time world heavyweight champion George Foreman was impressed with Mike Tyson after viewing a video clip of him hitting the pads and thinks he could be a contender if he dedicates himself to training.

”I was so happy. He looked like he had turned the clock back at least 20 years,” Foreman told IFL TV. “He was looking fit and those punches were coming sharp. If he’s able to go into the woods and dedicate himself to that for about 10 months, he could come back and really be a top contender…I would like to see him back in the ring. He’s an older fella, but a record is always waiting to be broke.”

Ryder eyes NYC showdown with Jacobs

John Ryder says a win over former IBF Middleweight ruler Danny Jacobs in New York would fire him back in line for another shot at WBA super middleweight world champion Callum Smith in the latest episode of Matchroom Boxing’s podcast ‘The Lockdown Tapes’.

Ryder (28-5, 16 KOs) pushed Smith all the way at the M&S Bank Arena Liverpool in November but lost out in what many thought was a controversial decision. A rematch with ‘Mundo’ is at the top of Ryder’s wish-list but the Islington man accepts he may have to earn another shot.

“The fight that I really want is the rematch with Callum but I know that Chudinov is now in the mandatory position,” said Ryder. “In order to get myself back there then why not someone like Danny Jacobs in New York. He’s a great fighter and I want to test myself against the best. Continue reading “Ryder eyes NYC showdown with Jacobs”

47-year-old “Golden Boy” Oscar de la Hoya hasn’t fought since 2008. Will he come out of retirement to face MMA star Conor McGregor?

Oscar stated on a CBS Sports podcast that in a hypothetical fight he’d take out McGregor in two rounds. “Oh come on, brother. Two rounds. One thing about me is I went for the kill, always. Look, Conor McGregor, I love him in the Octagon, I respect him, I watch him all the time. But the boxing ring is a whole different story, it’s a whole different story.”

McGregor responded via Twitter, “I accept your challenge, Oscar de la Hoya.”

Gallen wants to get in the ring with Tyson

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Australian football legend and heavyweight boxer Paul Gallen (9-0-1, 5 KOs) would happily get in the ring with Mike Tyson if the former world champion comes to Australia for charity exhibition bouts. But not for free.

“I’d be happy for a charity to be involved, but I’d be getting paid for it,” Gallen told Wild World of Sports. “You’ve got to remember, Mike Tyson is Mike Tyson – he hasn’t got an off switch, he hasn’t got an exhibition fight switch. If he gets in the ring with someone, we’ve all seen what he’s done to people in the past and that mentality’s not going to change.

“How could you not want to get in the ring with Mike Tyson, to be honest? …but as far as being a legitimate fight or a charity bout, it’s not something you’d do just for charity, jump in the ring with that bloke.”
