“It came from my training but not only my training as a boxer and referee but my training as a fireman for the Los Angeles Fire Department where I worked for 31 years, where we were required to be Emergency Medical Technicians, so I was a EMT for 31 years, as well,” said Reiss. Boxing Safety Protocols Updated in Las Vegas

The Bubble Ring
Photo: Mikey Williams/Top Rank

With numerous fights being cancelled due to non-fighters (trainers, managers, cutmen) being infected by COVID-19, the safety protocols in Las Vegas have been updated. Now upon a positive test for someone in a boxer’s camp, that person is immediately quarantined.

Top Rank will then consult with infectious disease experts and a risk level will be assessed for the non-infected team members. If deemed tolerable and acceptable, the fighter and remaining team are immediately isolated in their room and both must test negative daily until the fight.

Does it work? Under the original protocol, three of the six bouts taking place Thursday night would have been cancelled.

Eleider Alvarez-Joe Smith Jr. fight postponed

Former WBO light heavyweight champion, Eleider Alvarez, was injured in training last week. He met with the team’s doctor, Dr. Francis Fontaine, and the report is an injury to the right shoulder which requires anti-inflammatory treatments, physiotherapy and a stop in sparring for 4 weeks. Unfortunately, this injury forces the postponement of the WBO light heavyweight elimination fight against Joe Smith Jr on ESPN on July 16.

Dr. Fontaine is confident of complete rehabilitation in a few weeks but for coach Marc Ramsay, the fact that he cannot allow adequate preparation for his boxer against a dangerous opponent like Smith Jr. in a fight of such great importance, a postponement of the fight was necessary.

This is the third main event to be postponed since Top Rank brought back boxing earlier this month.
