“We want fans to feel boxing from our viewpoint”

On Tuesday morning, the World Boxing Association (WBA) held a press conference to introduce the 99th Convention, scheduled to take place online between July 1st and July 4th. More than 50 journalists from different countries joined Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, president of the pioneer organization, through digital platforms, to talk about the event starting next week.

As the WBA has expressed since announcing this convention, it will be the first virtual convention in boxing history and will serve as the kick-off for the 2021 centennial celebration in Moscow, Russia. But it is also an opportunity to reinvent ourselves, adapting to the moments we live in and offering new tools to the fans, who will be the great beneficiaries of this format. World ranked welterweight contender Radzhab Butaev has spoken out following the recent details of Alexander Besputin’s failed drug test results from their WBA welterweight world championship fight on November 30, 2019 in Monte Carlo. Recently, Butaev and his team were informed that the ‘B’ sample from Besputin also contained LGD-4033 (Ligandrol). The ‘A’ sample contained the same prohibited drug when the finding was announced in January. Besputin was declared the winner of their hard-fought bout by unanimous decision by scores of 116-112 on all three judges’ scorecards. SES Boxing returns on Saturday, July 18, with an open-air show on the floating stage at Elbauenpark in Magdeburg, Germany. No spectators will be allowed. Unbeaten world-rated heavyweight Agit Kabayel (19-0, 13 KOs) will headline facing Evgenios Lazaridis (16–2, 10 KOs). MDR will broadcast in Germany, with ESPN+ likely airing the event in the U.S.

With a lack of live boxing events due to the global COVID-19 Pandemic, the British & Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA) today announced a series of 10 professional boxing events under the ‘Let Battle Commence’ banner, which will be broadcast on PPV July 18. Initially, the events will take place behind closed doors at the Northern Hotel in Aberdeen. Each of the first three events is restricted to five contests and a maximum of six rounds per contest in order to comply with the United Kingdom Government’s Guidelines.

The first event is headlined by former longtime World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Scott Harrison (27-3-2, 15 KOs) versus Paul Peers (0-2). For the 42-year-old Harrison, it will be his first fight in seven years and this is currently the first professional boxing show scheduled to take place in the UK since the coronavirus pandemic.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WBC contemplated only 20 editions of its “WBC Talks” platform, 10 in Spanish and 10 in English. However, this way of linking with people was so well received that by today they have broadcast more than 100 programs.

Today it was announced a change of schedule:

English version: Monday/Wednesday at noon ET, 9AM PT
Spanish version: Tuesday/Thursday at noon ET, 9AM PT

We just celebrated Father’s day all around the world. There are those who are still fortunate enough to enjoy their dads in this life. If so, then it`s time to hug them, kiss them, talk to them and thank them for everything they have done, even though this might have to be virtual due to the terrible pandemic the world is suffering, the rest of us will be meditating and talking with our Old Man looking up top the sky, even though he is no longer physically here with us.

The World Boxing Council has announced that their 2020 convention scheduled for August 12 to 15 will be a virtual event.

WBC Statement: “We all looked forward to the month of August for our 58th WBC Convention, this time in the majestic city of St Petersburg, Russia.
