In the first world title fight since the coronavirus lockdown, WBA #12 contender Joshua “The Professor” Franco (17-1-2, 8 KOs) dethroned previously unbeaten WBA super flyweight champion Andrew Moloney (21-1, 14 KOs) by narrow twelve round unanimous decision on Tuesday night inside “The Bubble” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Franco pressed the action and closed strong, busting up the now ex-champ in round ten. Franco then battered Maloney to the canvas in round eleven and that was the difference. Scores were 115-112, 114-113, 114-113.

Joshua Franco: “After the fourth round, I gained the momentum and figured him out. I always knew this was possible. I wasn’t nervous when the decision was being read. I knew I’d done enough to win this fight. My coach, Robert Garcia, had me ready. I’m going home with the belt.”

Andrew Moloney: “It just wasn’t my night tonight. This was not the best version of Andrew Moloney, but full credit to Joshua Franco. He deserved to win the title with his effort. He closed the fight strong, like a true champion. I’ll be back. One loss won’t define me.”

  • Even though Franco was a clear winner, I am shocked that he got the decision as the “judging” in the Bubble thus far has had a pervasive stench.

  • I was not surprised by the decision in favor of Franco. I thought the odds on a Moloney win were out of line. Franco was a live underdog. Anyone who can hang with Negrete is a tough customer. He was getting the opportunity for a title and he looked prepared to take advantage of it. He started slowly, but finished strongly. I have to admire Moloney for his comeback in the final round after being battered in the previous round.

It was a terrific fight and the right man won. Moloney certainly deserves a rematch and I would like to watch them go at it again.

  • Is it a requirement that you have to be super tough to be in Robert Garcia’s gym? I can only imagine what the sparring sessions are like there! This was a decent card and the main event was one heck of a fight. Hard not to like both fighters after that one.

  • Maloney got his his ass beat! Had to go to the hospital! Fight not even close!!
