In a clash of former world title challengers, featherweight Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz (26-2, 16 KOs) outpointed Jason Sanchez (15-2, 8 KOs) over ten rounds. Scores were 98-92, 97-93, 98-92.
“I can fight at featherweight, or I can make 122 pounds,” said Diaz afterward. “Whatever Top Rank wants, but I’m ready for a big fight in either weight division. I am a completely different and improved fighter from the one who fought Shakur Stevenson last year.
“I worked on my power in the gym. My coaches, Nelson Rodriguez and Freddie Roach, got me ready for tonight. I’m ready for a big fight now. Whether it’s at 126 or 122, I’m ready. This is a new Christopher Diaz.”
In a clash of unbeaten junior welterweights, Miguel Contreras (11-0, 6 KOs) outboxed previously unbeaten Rolando Vargas (5-1, 5 KOs) over six rounds. Scores were 58-56 3x.
Heavyweight Helaman Olguin (8-3, 3 KOs) won a six round majority decision over previously unbeaten Adam Stewart (8-1-1, 5 KOs) in a six-rounder. Scores were 58-56, 58-56, 57-57.
The Joseph Adorno-Alexis del Bosque bout was canceled after Adorno was admitted to a Las Vegas hospital due to suspected dehydration. The telecast will proceed as scheduled with four fights.
