Juan Domingo “Martillo” Roldan passes

By Gabriel F. Cordero

Sad to report that former middleweight world title challenger Juan Domingo “Martillo” Roldán, 63, died at the José Bernardo Iturraspe Hospital in San Francisco in Cordoba, Argentina. The cause was “respiratory failure”‘ associated with “bilateral pneumonia” that was diagnosed after he tested positive for covid-19.

Roldán had a professional record of 67-5-2 with 47 knockouts between 1978 and 1988. He had three world title shots, coming up short against Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, and Michael Nunn. In most other eras, Roldan likely would have been a world champion.

Mental Health

By Mauricio Sulaiman
Son of José Sulaiman – WBC President

This past November 14th marked the sixth anniversary of the creation of the WBC’s mental health program and the World Boxing Council’s appointment to the USA Congressional Mental Health Task Force under the leadership of Congresswoman, Grace Napolitano.

That wonderful day, in which we were able to visit Congress in Washington D.C., to celebrate our collaboration and support of Mental Health Awareness, stands as one of the most important ones in WBC history.

Jill Diamond, World Director of WBC Cares, organized a very complete agenda for our visit in which we had the company of great figures of the boxing world who accompanied us; legendary friends and champions as Julio Cesar Chávez, Erik Morales, Roberto Durán, Mia St John, Gerry Cooney and Ray Mancini, Alicia Ashley, Heather Hardy, Chazz Witherspoon, Karl Dargan, DeMarcus Corley, Juan LaPorte, Chuck Williams, Bob Yalen, and the WBC staff. On that great day, we met with a significant number of U.S. Senators and Congressmen, including Grace Napolitano, Nancy Pelosi, Peter King, Raul Grijalva, Gregory Meeks, Ben Ray Lujan, among others. Mental Health awareness is a bipartisan issue, one that we all support. Continue reading “Mental Health”

69th anniversary of Joe Louis Exhibition in Japan

Image001 (7)By Joe Koizumi

Today (November 18) is the sixty-ninth anniversary of “Brown Bomber” Joe Louis coming to show an exhibition in Japan in 1951. It was just less than a month after the former world heavyweight champ Louis fought his last fight and was knocked out of the ropes by Rocky Marciano at the Madison Square Garden on October 26. The referee Ruby Goldstein called a halt without taking a count to save the 37-yer-old loser but still hero.

It was Torii Oasis Shriners Club and the Press Yomiuri in association with the USO (United Service Organization that provided the US military people with various entertainments from the US mainland) that organized this historic event. On November 18, 1951, the curtain-raiser started with a 45-minute professional wrestling game of Bobby Bruns and Gino Red Vagnone, both of US at 1 PM. Rikidozan, a future wrestling star here, wrestled to a draw with Ovila Asselin, Canada. Continue reading “69th anniversary of Joe Louis Exhibition in Japan”

Franco retains WBA title by phantom headbutt

WBA super flyweight champion Joshua “El Profesor” Franco (17-1-2, 8 KOs) controversially retained his belt against former champion Andrew “The Monster” Moloney (21-1, 14 KOs) by no-decision on Saturday night inside “The Bubble” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Moloney started punching non-stop from the opening bell. By round two, Franco’s right eye was closed. It was decided that Franco could not continue in round three. Referee Russell Mora ruled that Franco’s eye was closed by a headbutt. Officials reviewed replay footage for nearly 30 minutes and finally determined that they found the headbutt that caused the swelling. ESPN announcers repeatedly reviewed the same tape and couldn’t find the headbutt.

Andrew Moloney: “They took this away from me. The injury was caused by a punch. I can’t believe this. I was in control of the fight and on my way to a clear victory. I deserved this win. I landed 50 punches on that eye. It was not even close.”

Bob Arum: “This is an absolute disgrace. There was no headbutt. Andrew Moloney should be the new champion.”

Franco’s promoter Oscar de la Hoya (via Twitter): “The effects of the head butt are already there and any punch will just swell it some more.”
