After spending almost six weeks in a hospital in serious conditions – including a few days in a medically induced coma because of some complications – he eventually won his battle and was sent back home in Plainevaux, Belgium, early this week. The EBU board and his colleagues wish him a full recovery and to be back on the boxing stage again soon.

Estrada (40-3 27 KOs) and Gonzalez (49-2 41 KOs) both regained their World champion status in stunning fashion in recent outings, with Estrada beating Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in a rematch to regain the WBC and Ring Magazine Super-Flyweight belts last April and ‘Chocolatito’ rolling back the years to rip the WBA strap from previously unbeaten Brit Kal Yafai in Dallas in February with a clinical ninth round KO win. Richard Steele Interview

By Jeff Zimmerman

Legendary Hall of Fame referee Richard Steele, at 76, has been in the fight game most of his life – first as a fighter and then arguably the greatest referee in boxing history. Steele has seen it all in boxing and has been the 3rd man in the ring for some of the sport’s most iconic fights that are still talked about today, including Leonard-Hagler, Hagler-Hearns and Chavez-Taylor just to name a few.

But with the recent pandemic that has swept the world and has caused thousands of deaths and an economic shutdown, Steele, like most people, is stuck at home instead of making his daily trips to his Richard Steele Foundation & Boxing Club (https://richardsteelefoundation.org/) where he runs his various educational programs for at risk youth around N. Las Vegas plus a Parkinson’s program for those inflicted with the dreaded disease.

Fightnews.com® caught up with Steele this week as he now spends most days watching the Price is Right, Divorce Court, old basketball and football games and of course past classic fights that are being aired on various networks. Continue reading “Richard Steele Interview”

Synergy in Boxing

By Mauricio Sulaimán
Son of José Sulaimán / WBC President

While we are still alert and active, albeit prudently staying at home, diligently, imaginatively and intelligently trying to keep the boxing community connected through WBC Talks and WBC Workouts, some boxing issues are already occurring.

Devin Haney has asked the WBC for his reinstatement as WBC world lightweight champion, because he has already healed, and it is not necessary for him to continue as champion in recess.

We’ve also received the reaction of Fortuna and Campbell as they were ordered to fight for the title due to Haney’s injury. I was missing that friction pressure that one constantly shoulders in the lively and vigilant twenty-four hours per day administration of the WBC.

The WBC Board will make a decision in the coming days. Continue reading “Synergy in Boxing”

The WBSS is monitoring the COVID-19 situation and under the current circumstances, they feel a feasible date for Briedis-Dorticos is out of reach at the moment.

Q&A: Jose Ramirez Wants All The Belts

WBC/WBO super lightweight world champion Jose Ramirez is staying ready. The 2012 U.S. Olympian has not fought since knocking out Maurice Hooker last July in a title unification bout. He was supposed to fight Viktor Postol Feb. 2 in China (Feb. 1 prime time in the U.S.), but it became the first major bout to be impacted by COVID-19. The May 9 makeup date in Fresno also fell by the wayside.

Ramirez is self-quarantining with his family in California’s Central Valley, but he is awaiting the call for the third — and hopefully final — Postol fight date. Continue reading “Q&A: Jose Ramirez Wants All The Belts”

Referee Luis Pabon on knockdowns

Says referee’s error cost Mike Tyson a knockout win against Buster Douglas

WBA international referee Luis Pabon explains step by step how the third man in the ring should act when a legal knockdown occurs.

Interestingly, one of the examples of a mistake Pabon uses was in the famous Buster Douglas-Mike Tyson fight. Pabon says in round eight after Douglas was knocked down by Tyson, referee Octavio Meyran neglected to pick up the timekeeper’s count and started the count a second late. Douglas barely beat Meyran’s ten count and famously went on to KO Tyson two rounds later. “Tyson won and lost on the same night,” said Pabon, who added that Meyran’s refereeing career was basically over after that fight.
