Duran, The Great Warrior

By Mauricio Sulaimán
Son of José Sulaimán / President of the WBC

Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán managed to knock out the coronavirus, and is at home after a stay at the General Hospital in Panama. We had just finished celebrating the 40th anniversary of that historic triumph over Sugar Ray Leonard, which happened on June 20, 1980, when the news of Durán’s admission to the hospital was announced.

Roberto always showed positivity and tranquility, and put himself in the hands of doctors, nurses and the entire medical staff that was there to attend to him. The discharge from the hospital was very emotional, and demonstrated the greatness of all those heroes of humanity who are there ready to save the lives of whoever is in a difficult situation. Octavio Raúl Rodrígues Salazar, Gustavo Padilla, Raúl Cáiz, Jr., Luis Pabón and José Roberto Torres all participated in the WBA ring officials seminar as the last order of the day for the 99th WBA convention online.

Several hypothetical, situational exercises were held combining both judging and referee issues. Slips versus knockdowns, cuts caused by unintentional head clashes, etc. were discussed. Continue reading “Ring Officials Seminar closes out WBA 99th Convention”

Resistance To Change

By Mauricio Sulaimán
Son of José Sulaimán – President of the WBC

The World Boxing Council, in collaboration with national boxing federations and local boxing commissions, has revolutionized the sport, implementing measures to make it safer for fighters as well as to improve the dynamics of the sport in general, making precise modifications to certain rules to achieve justice, and modernizing boxing to bring it to the levels of other sports, using technology that is now a reality and serves to maximize justice in the fights.

Resistance to change is what so often dominates. Traditionalists immediately reject the possibility of even studying and analyzing the proposed modifications. There are some who, taking advantage of their position, abuse the power that it gives them, and even take actions to block the possibility of any variation/innovation/progress. Amir Khan Speaks

Khan2 (1)

By Boxing Bob Newman

Former unified 140-lb champion Amir Khan held court this afternoon during the WBA’s 99th convention on Zoom!

The former champ answered questions from both the panel and fans who tuned in.

Khan reflected on two of his losses being the toughest to come back from. The first one was against Danny Garcia. Khan admitted going into that fight to cocky and thinking that Garcia couldn’t do anything to him.

“The fight against Lamont Peterson was also hard to take. When the judges said he had won the fight, there’s no way he won the fight. I put him down two times. One thing I respected was that the WBA, upon learning that he took testosterone, they reinstated me as champion. It made taking the loss a little less difficult.” Continue reading “Amir Khan Speaks”

WBA convention Day 3 Notes & Quotes

By Boxing Bob Newman

Day 3 of the WBA 99th convention, virtual version, commenced at 10:00 a.m., ET. The seminar topics were Challenges in Boxing, Boxing & Gender Equality and Olympic Boxing.

Challenges In Boxing

CHALLENGES IN BOXING

International journalist Claudia Trejo interviewed Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn and WBA president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza on the logistics of getting boxing back on its feet during this pandemic. While admitting that the difficulties are huge in getting boxing to return, Hearn felt that the promoters have a great product and the sport will return to its former luster.

Hearn also felt that in the UK, boxing will return back to “normal” with crowds, be that indoor or outdoor, full capacity or 50% capacity. That will remain to be seen.

“What we need is quality to bring the fans back. If we don’t have the ring walks, the crowd noise, we need to have quality match-ups.”

“We come from a sport where the powers that be don’t particularly like each other. But we have to work with each other. I think that hopefully, what’s happened in the world will make people want to work together.” Continue reading “WBA convention Day 3 Notes & Quotes”
