Marriaga foe misses weight by 8.7 pounds

Update: Marriaga-Yap was cancelled by the NSAC after Yap weighed in in nearly nine pounds heavy. New main event: Felix Verdejo vs. Will Madera.

It’s possible that another Top Rank main event could fall through. At Wednesday’s weigh-in, Miguel Marriaga weighed 127.3 for his bout against Mark John Yap on Thursday night inside “The Bubble” in Las Vegas. However Yap weighed 136.7, 8.7 pounds over the 128 pound contract weight. Marriaga-Yap was already a replacement fight.

Gotta feel for Top Rank, who almost single-handedly brought back boxing after the shutdown. ALL of TR’s first five main events in July have fallen through for various reasons. Continue reading “Marriaga foe misses weight by 8.7 pounds”

Kevin Lerena 1

By Ron Jackson

IBO cruiserweight champion Kevin “Two Guns” Lerena has a strong claim to being South Africa’s best fighter at present, after making a record six successful defenses of his IBO belt. The only other South African cruiserweight to hold the IBO belt was Sebastiaan Rothmann who won the belt in October 2002 and after making one successful defense lost the belt in February 2004.

However, Thabiso Mchunu 22-5; 13 from KwaZulu-Natal would possibly dispute the claim that Lerena is the best cruiserweight in South Africa. Continue reading “Kevin Lerena: South Africa’s best fighter”

WBC on referees wearing face masks

In the framework of boxing’s return with strict new hygiene and protection rules and protocols due to the Covid-19 pandemic, several parties have approached the WBC to suggest referees not wear face masks or mouth covers during their work in the ring. The issue is that the masks limit the passage of air and hinders the normal oxygenation process.

After the World Boxing Council consulted with several worldwide experts and its Medical Committee, it has been determined that the use of the mask is not, in any way, harmful for the referee at all, so it does not pose a risk to their health. The decision of the use of mouth covers will be for each referee or boxing commission where the fight takes place. Continue reading “WBC on referees wearing face masks”

Herring: These tests are 30% faulty

WBO junior lightweight world champion Jamel Herring isn’t happy that his world title defense against Jonathan Oquendo was postponed. “These tests are 30% faulty,” Herring posted on social media. “Here’s clearly my timeline of when I contracted the virus, til the time I came back negative. I even woke up today on weight, ready to go, and even took an antibody test this morning to prove I’m fine, but the commission didn’t want to risk it.

“Crazy thing is… this was the easiest weight cut that I had! I wasn’t drained, and I could’ve made weight earlier last week. My trainer and manager Brian “Bomac” McIntyre wanted to see if I could compete at 126… but that’s pushing it.

“I did everything possible. They asked me to take the antibody test this morning, just for them to return and cancel the fight.”

Tomorrow’s Top Rank on ESPN main event between WBO junior lightweight world champion Jamel Herring and Jonathan Oquendo will not proceed as scheduled after Herring tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this morning. The Mikaela Mayer-Helen Joseph junior lightweight bout will be Tuesday’s main event.

Said Herring, “I’m extremely disappointed that I’m not going to be able to fight tomorrow night. As I’ve shared previously, I tested positive for COVID-19 on June 22 after exhibiting symptoms. I quarantined and recovered as directed by my doctor. I then retested on July 3 and my test was negative, so this result is a complete surprise. I was fully prepared to make my second title defense tomorrow night. I am hoping that my team and Top Rank can reschedule this fight soon. Thank you for all the support everyone has shown. I can’t wait to get back in the ring and perform.”
