Wallin is the Toast of Sweden

Newly emerged top heavyweight contender Otto Wallin enjoyed a national hero’s homecoming yesterday in his native Sweden. Basking in the glory earned by his fight against former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas last Saturday, Wallin was greeted at Stockholm airport by countrymen eager to celebrate with their newest sports star and then whisked off for a national media tour.

“It felt great to have such a welcome at home in Sweden,” said a proud Wallin. “The media and the people are really backing me more and more and that’s awesome. Boxing in Sweden needs all the attention it can get and it feels good to be part of helping boxing at home and to be a role model for the kids.”

  • He is trained by former world champ Joey Gamache, hope he also gets a taste of the glory!

      • As much I respected Wallin’s bravado during most of the fight, it is true that he was a bit dirty in the fight. He purposefully raked the cut with his glove, then tried to head butt Fury’s eye. In short, he tried everything possible to open that cut even wider. Fury’s shut eye was the main target for the rest of the fight.

Wallin may have done well overall, but he definitely showed an ugly side with his roughhouse tactics.

  • Most ring physicians or ref’s would have stopped it but my score was 117-111 Fury at the end.

  • This guy got mopped up and only did better than what some thought because his opponent had a huge cut. And he raked the cut. Guy is a cheat. Role model????

    • He cut the guy who cherry picked him to the point of the fight needing to be stopped. He may have ruined fury. That eye is now a target

      • Who cares about a cut? Cuts are flukes anyways unless your Holyfield or Hopkins and are pros of the headbutt. The guy is a joke.

  • Everyone on here was calling him a joke beforehand and the guy went out there and did well. Credit where it’s due. Anyone with a slither of ring IQ would be going for that eye all night long. So he fought a little dirty.. .I didn’t hear Tyson crying about it.

    • @Chris: not everyone was calling Wallin a joke. I for one, predicted that he was significantly better than Schwarz.

Fighting dirty is not sportsman-like but targeting Fury’s eye was indeed his only chance in this fight.

  • No one expected Otto to do so Well, especially Team Fury * * *
Sweden has good reason to be proud !

  • The way they are celebrating in Sweden, tells all how bad the sport of boxing is over here. Wallin had a welcome maybe bigger to the one Ingemar “Ingo” Johansson had. To celebrate even bigger, a fight against Wilder could be ideal. The only problem is if Wallin might have time to throw at least one punch, before Wilder put him flat on his back
