In a good toe-to-toe scrap, unbeaten junior bantamweight Fernando “Puma” Martinez (14-0, 8 KOs) ended the world title reign of long time IBF 115lb champion Jerwin Ancajas (32-2-2, 22 KOs) on Saturday night at the Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Martinez was a buzzsaw and comprehensively outworked the champ compiling a clear twelve round unanimous decision. Scores were 117-111, 118-110, 118-110.

Martinez landed 427 total punches of which 421 were power shots, a new division record.

Ancajas, who confirmed he will exercise a contractual rematch clause, was making his tenth title defense of the belt he won in 2016. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution following the match.

  • Lost Estrada – Gonzalez 3, Rungvisai – Cuadras 2 and now Ioka – Ancajas all in the same weight class in like a few weeks. But we did gain Jesse Rodriguez and now Fernando Martinez. Just a crazy division. Martinez will be fun to watch.

  • Bless Ancajas/Martinez because both fighters represented their countries with great pride, glory and thunder. The fight also involved tremendous:

    1) Heart.
    2) Will.
    3) Determination.
    4) Non-clinching.
    5) Body punching.
    6) Rock solid chins.
    7) Combination punching.
    8) Conditioning.
    9) High punch volume.

Ancajas did not display enough authoritative jabs to help minimize Martinez’s inside approach/pressure. Martinez’s left hooks would have been more impactful if he turned over his left hand for better exposure of his knuckles. During the fight, I sipped my bourbon while shaking my head in great admiration of both fighters!!!

I hope to see a rematch.

  • This turned out to be a weekend full of surprises. This is why boxing is a great sport when opponents are matched up correctly. Congratulations to all the fighters that turned the tables.

  • would like to see a rematch could go down as one of the best fights of the year
