Taylor: No rematch, I took over and bossed him

“I don’t think there is any need for a rematch,” said undisputed super lightweight Josh Taylor after his split decision against Jack Catterall. “I won the fight by several rounds. I won in the second half of the fight. I took over and bossed him. He was doing a hell of a lot of holding and spoiling. The ref taking the point off me helped him a little bit, but I still won the fight.

“I started a little slow, but once I grabbed the momentum, I started catching him with the bigger shots. He was trying to spoil a lot. Going down and up a lot and clashing my head. He caught me with a couple of good shots. I’m not gonna lie to you. It wasn’t my best performance. I put a lot of pressure on myself with it being my homecoming. Been three years, first time since lockdown and all that. I put a lot of pressure on myself being the heavy favorite and it showed in the first half of the fight.

“Once I got my rhythm I started catching him with the bigger shots and catching him and catching him. It wasn’t my best performance, but I believe I got the win 100 percent. But Jack did very well.
“I put a lot of pressure on myself to put on a good show for my home fans. But it didn’t matter in the end. I got the good result.

“I knew I won the fight. It was close. Overall I scored the bigger shots, the better shots, the more meaningful shots so I know I won the fight. It was a little bit close, but I know I won the fight.”

  • He was beaten. Rubbish decision. Poor Caterall.

A couple days ago Taylor said he could fight his whole career that weight if he wanted to and now he’s saying he struggled to make the weight. Jack deserves a rematch.

    • Jack wins the decision if he pressed forward and threw hands more in the 11th and 12th.

  • Catteral had his chance got lucky and caught an unmotivated Taylor who did look like crap with soe good shots but he kept backing up and grabbing he never once especially down the home stretch look like he wanted to win he looked more like he was surviving hoping every now and then to catch taylor again but realistically both these guys get KOd by Tea Lopez or even Ramirez and if Taylor does move up to 147 he gets trashed by all the top fighters there not including the champions if Catterall wants another shot then beat the winner of Ramirez and Pedraza

    • Straight up the way I seen it. Have you ever seen a guy not want to win a belt more than Huggerall? He made John Ruiz very proud tonight. Honestly, I could do without watching either of these guys again, although I know Taylor is WAY better than what he showed.

  • Taylor won by a razor thin margin… Catterall lost this fight on inactivity during the championship rounds…This was and is a bad stylistic match up for Taylor….Taylor should avoid this guy

    .

  • To beat an undisputed champ you need to take the fight to him. Caterrall barely did much except stand sideways the whole fight to make any left hand shot a behind the head shot. And the ref should never ref a major fight again.

  • I haven’t seen it but the TV crew calling the fight had Taylor winning. From the round by round report that I read it seemed like draw or a catterall win but Andre Ward scored the fight for Taylor which is a fairly credible statement.

    • Andre was a better fighter than a judge! Ward even said he was scoring based on what Taylor should have been able to do. That is not how you score a fight.

  • I didn’t see it but from the sound of it, Taylor probably doesn’t wanna risk it again after he got lucky.

  • Well, I guess I have to watch the fight now. No worries guys. I will watch it and give you my honest and irrelevant opinion.

  • This was an awful fight to watch and Catterall probably should have been disqualified, but to call it a robbery is just silly. It shows a lack of understanding.

    Points:

    1) the judges view the fight from 3 different sides of the ring. In a fight filled with cliches, it would smell if the scores actually aligned.

    2) body language of this fight. I’m not saying the aggressor should always win the round, but if you’re view is skewed, then often the aggressor gets the benefit of the doubt. Consider that after the knockdown, it was still Taylor who pressed the action.

    3) hometown noise…anytime Taylor threw anything close the crowd reacted like he landed. Again, if you can only see his back, then you’ll likely believe the crowd.

Finally, reconsider Catterall’s body language the whole fight. He never pressed and was the holder most of the time. With most of the early rounds being close, I’m a little surprised it was as close as it was. Even if you bought into the punchstat, then you had to give Josh Taylor the final 4 rounds.

Neither fighter deserved this win, but I’m pretty old school and still believe you need to take the Title. Nobody in their right mind actually thinks Catterall did that.

  • Taylor overated always was. Took Taylor too long to realise he was coming in too straight. He finally figured it out around round 9. Great champions solve these things earlier. Spence or Crawford will hurt him.

  • Josh should retire with his 140 Unified Title intact and move to 147. Hes gonna get his butt kicked bad at 147 but he retains the bragging rights of being the 140 kingpin. The guy I saw tonight was lucky, and had no plan B.

  • Taylor looked horrible. Says he bossed Catterall.. he didn’t boss shit. Should’ve adjusted early but didn’t or couldn’t. Catterall can’t bitch about it either. If you want to take the title then you need to TAKE the title. It was a close fight that could’ve gone either way. And NOW after this fiasco he says (Taylor) making weight is too difficult. Go ahead to 147.. forget about Crawford, Spence, Ennis, Ortiz. Who gave you the advise to keep trying to knock Catterall out all night? Teo Lopez Sr?

  • I am having a hard time seeing Taylor at 147. After Ramirez takes care of Pedraza, let’s see a Taylor vs. Ramirez rematch during late 2022 or early 2023.

  • You dont realy beleive u won that fight ya know ya lost massive flog for celebrating that win deadset disgrace

    • Agree Nick. He’s deluded. Lost more fans with his interview afterwards than his poor performance imo. Should have said “… it was close, I had an off night, and maybe got a bit lucky, but that’s boxing”. Instead, he dishes out that trash.

  • I was a fan of Josh Taylor. Not anymore. He bossed him? Taylor got his ears boxed off and he looked befuddled the whole fight. He was always two steps behind the beat. Catterall’s jab, slick boxing and Taylors inability to get off was Taylors undoing. Taylor lost that fight handily. Just look at the punch box numbers.

  • Catterall ripped right off a decision win. Taylors been found out and there’s no way he wins a rematch.
    Catterall in 2!

  • You lost clearly my friend. All the Sky TV commentors said the same word EMBARRASSING decision. You deserved have lost your titles because you received a boxing lesson. Very bad post fight with a lack of humble and not recognizing the fair victory of Catterall. I hope you fight next agains Subriel Matias who will finish you.

  • Such looser got beaten big time,he bossed himself because everyone saw winning to Cattrell

  • Taylor is scum of the earth. Big mouth talked all kind of shit then got his sorry ass beaten. Now let the excuses begin. This guy better quit talking about Crawford he will get slaughtered by Terrance.

Horrible decision and now he’s almost trying too hard to convince everyone he won the fight. Those two inept crooked paid off judges had those cards filled out before the fight even began! Disgusting and I find this spoiled bitch revolting and nauseating.

  • With all the hype around Taylor being the next greatest thing with the idea of him moving up to 147 to challenge Crawford now seems a bit tarnished as he clearly should have lost this fight with Catterall. Piss poor judging to say the least. Crawford would annihilate Taylor.

  • Scottish hospitality must of been great for the judges….were they still drunk?? Gutted for boxing as another bad decision, but this one was on the grandest of stages. Catterall…. poor lad

  • Taylor’s fans are making excuses. He was unmotivated and had a night off. I always thought that about Ramírez, he had a night off. I think he’s better than what he showed that night. And watching this fight kinda reassures my thoughts, Taylor is no world beater. I know he beat Prograis, but I think he’s overrated. By the way, I think Taylor should be more humble, and at least admit he was in a hard, close fight. You’ll see, he’ll be losing soon. Crawford will annihilate him.

“Boxing is well on its way to sporting irrelevance”.

Nope, Colson, it’s already been there a while…..

  • 115-111 for Taylor.
Catterall did not impose his will on Taylor.
Catterall did not fight like a driven fighter trying to Take the Title away from the Champion.
Catterall was too defensive, on the backfoot all night, and too inactive with his punches.

The reigning Champion Taylor was the aggressor throughout the fight.
Catterall appeared to be focused on staying away and avoiding engaging.

    It was no robbery.
    Taylor won on aggression.
8 rds for Taylor, 4 rds for Catterall.
By no means, a classic fight; it’s not worth rewatching (nor worth a rematch for that matter).
It was as lame an attempt for a Title Challenge as I’ve ever seen.

  • Josh Taylor is deluded if he thinks he won that fight.
I was a fan of his but if he doesn’t give jack c a rematch before he vacates them titles and moves up he’s running scared because he knows he was beat by the better boxer.sad day for boxing one of the worst results I’ve ever seen in any sporting event.

  • Taylor knows he lost that fight, doesn’t want to take a chance on another one. That’s why he don’t want a rematch. Boxing is still pretty corrupt. That wasn’t a close fight, and I’m a Taylor fan, at least I was.
