Undisputed super lightweight champion Josh Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) barely retained his WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO belts by twelve round split decision against WBO mandatory challenger Jack Catterall (26-1, 13 KOs) on Saturday night before 12,101 at the OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland. For the first eight rounds Catterall largely outboxed and outpunched Taylor, dropping Taylor in round eight. After that Catterall’s workmate went down. Catterall was deducted a point in round ten for holding. Taylor was deducted a point for tapping Catterall after the bell in round eleven. Scores were 113-112 Catterall, 114-111, 113-112 Taylor.

Catterall had a big edge in the punch stats. 120/73 in total punches, 81-57 in power punches, 39-16 in jabs.

  • I am a big fan of Taylor but decisions like this do so much harm to boxing.

    I had it 9 rounds to 3.

    • I had 30$ on Catterall at 8/1. Disappointing . Either way , that was a shocking performance by taylor

  • Horrible, what a terrible sport. I’ve been losing interest for years, I’m done watching this crap.

  • Sloppy fight. Looked like Catterall won by a few points, but man, what a messy scrap. Taylor looked like rubbish.

  • Taylor was exposed a little but i felt he won Catteral showed in no way that he wanted to win down the stretch Taylor will get crushed at 147

    • You call yourself boxing historian with that comment???? Can I ask you where you come from? 🙂

  • Wrong decision simple as that. Catterall won the fight but two biased judges robbed him of the victory. Decisions like this only confirm how corrupt boxing is at the highest level so often.

  • 114-111 Catterall. Ridiculous decision IMO. Did I miss something? I was laughing at Andre Ward’s scoring, yet the judges agreed with him. What the hell? I didn’t even think it was all that close; the rounds Catterall won he won easy.

    • Thought it was a close fight but you dont win an undisputed decision by jabbing and headlocking like Catterall. The ref sucked and took the fight away from Taylor by saying any left hand was behind the head. Catterall was standing completely sideways for most of the fight. Taylor should have used a right hook. Obviously, doesnt have one.

      • I agree the referee sucked, but for different reasons. Catterall reminded me of John “The Octopus” Ruiz. Not only was he holding way too much, he wouldn’t break when commanded. While his knockdown of Taylor was clean, he clearly threw an Intentional shot at his head when he was down. I mean, he stopped momentum and then decided to throw. Filthy stuff!!! When he finally got a point deduction it was only after using both hands to press Taylor’s face toward the floor. He should have been disqualified!

As for Josh Taylor: I’m no homer! He was AWFUL! I could see the shots he should have thrown all night and he just didn’t do it. And no matter what Tessitore and Ward think, he did punch Catterall in the gut way after the bell. Don’t believe it? How’d Catterall’s response look: jovial and fun loving or angry?

As for the scoring…this was more wrestling match than Boxing match. Punchstat might show a huge advantage, but each round is scored individually and the last 4 rounds Catterall wasn’t throwing.

Rematch? I hope not! It was awful and honestly should have been stopped. The Commentators said it was high level stuff, but it was no better than the Scottish Heavyweight Championship a couple fights prior.

  • Fan of JT but why can fighters never hold their hands up in the post fight interview and admit that they were lucky to get the decision. Josh saying that he ‘bossed’ him just sounds ridiculous. He knows that’s a load of crap

    • The only boxer in my recollection who admitted he lost after he beat Glenn Catley controversially was Richie Woodhall

  • Well,if you thought the Ryder/Jacobs cards were off then this was an absolute disgrace.
Catterall outboxed, out fought and out smarted Taylor all night.
How the one judge scored it 114-111 Taylor, I’ll never know.
Catterall landed the better, cleaner, harder shots all night long and Taylor never got in any sort of rhythm.
All Catterall had to do was roll to the left and Taylor had no answer and then he got countered with straight lefts.
Catterall absolutely should be the new Undisputed champ.
Another horrendous decision that’s bad for boxing.

    • I had it 117-109 Catterall. It was a horrible fight to watch so there may not be a rematch. Catteral may have boosted his stock but I am not certain if he will be in high demand. Either way he was robbed today. Not sure where either of them will go from here.

      • They should order a rematch. That would set things straight and remove the stain of this decision.

  • I was watching the whole fight and I can say Taylor won the fight 14 rounds to 8 to Catterrall. Taylor won the last 10 rounds on biased replays

  • and Tim Bradley needs to be fired as a commentator he spits out the absolute dumbest crap all those years of blocking punches with his face has taken its toll

  • Styles make fight…Taylor in this fight …had horrible footwork…causing him to square up and constantly get hit and hurt by the short straight left hand…Catterall lost this fight by simply not being busy enough during the championship rounds..After the knockdown this was Catterall’s fight to lose and based on his activity or lack of .,Catteral lost., Catterall actually could have stopped Taylor after the eight round …Taylor just did not have an answer for that short left hand….Taylor was desperate….Taylor appeared to be busier swaying the judges… Catterall corner has some blame..no good instructions…Great Fight

  • The collective outrage at egregiously bad decisions like this is almost as maddening as the decision itself at this point. Catterall was fighting Taylor in Taylor’s backyard and the event was promoted by Taylor’s promoter, Top Rank. What the hell did all of you think was going to happen when it went the distance? Did you think Catterall was going to get a fair shake? Boxing is arguably the most corrupt sport on earth because there’s no oversight, it’s highly de-regulated, and crooks like Bob Arum are allowed to exist and make millions by fixing its events (i.e., bribing officials, financing the commentators) to benefit him and his stable. Not complicated, y’all. You think this was bad, go and watch the video of Guillermo Jones winning twelve of twelve rounds against then-WBO cruiser champ Johnny Nelson in Nelson’s backyard in either 2002 or 2003, only to leave with a draw. No wonder casual fans dislike boxing and don’t think twice of going over to MMA. In what other sport does a guy who’s actually the winner doesn’t get the win? Some dumb crap.

    • It’s called “money talks” and having government oversight won’t fix it but will only make it worse. And don’t forget, boxing in the U.K. is already regulated by the BBBofC, so fat lot of good that does.

    • mma just robs fighters in different ways. they won’t give great fighters the title shot when they want to protect their favorite champs

  • Taylor still has all those belts courtesy of terrible decision in a terrible fight. Catterall loses his undefeated record in a fight where he did more than enough to win.

  • I wish Catterall hadn’t disappeared after the knock down. He took his foot off the gas pedal just enough for an undeserving Taylor to sneak through. Nasty refereeing but I’m glad he evened it up despite it being a rubbish deduction on Taylor. Bad call#2 erased bad call #1.

    • How do you win comfortably by holding and deadlocking and you’re not even the champ?

  • I must’ve watched a different fight. Taylor looked like absolute garbage, had no fight plan, besides trying for the KO, and have no clue why his corner didn’t help him out. With that said, I had Taylor sweeping the last 4 rounds, had him winning 2 and 3, with a number of swing rounds in between. I could see Huggerall winning by a point, or Taylor by a point. One last thing, I do not ever want to watch that worthless, holding piece of garbage in a ring again. He made John Ruiz look like a saint!!! Mills Lane would have disqualified him after the 6th round.

    • RD, we are of a same mind! Not only did Catterall hold and grab more than he punched, he also wouldn’t break when told. Mills definitely would have DQd him!

  • Absolute robbery. Just horrible. Catterall boxed Taylor’s ears off. . Referee sucked .

  • I thought Catterall edged it, but he was in his opponents back yard. If he would have at least engaged more in the final 3 rounds he would have won. Taylor looked terrible. But honestly I wasn’t all into the hype. Good fighter, but I thought he lost to Prograis and barely edged Ramirez.

  • Taylor everybody’s super jr.welterweight champ looked like crap and if he moves up to welterweight he might have to go to the back of the line and if he stays in the jr. Welterweight division there are a lot of hungry talented young fighters waiting for him. He might have to retire if he wants to stay undefeated.

  • Coterell totally won that fight, Taylor hardly landed any clean punches. That fight was fixed there is no way on earth that Taylor could have beat Coterell on points with that performance. The two judges who scored the fight in Taylor’s favour should be investigated and struck off. It is disgusting that things like this can happen today.

  • Embarrassing decision, that was said the Sky TV commentors and I am totally agree. Poor Catterall, you gave a boxing lesson to the champion but with no prize, although maybe you should put a little more preasure specially after the knock down . This kind of things are a big shame and keep out credibility to this sport.

  • What a fix Taylor was beaten all the way and he knows it. To say he thought he won it was a ridiculous statement and he should be ashamed
