Unbeaten 2016 Olympian super lightweight Gary Antuanne Russell (15-0, 15 KOs) scored a tenth round TKO over former world champion Viktor Postol (31-4, 12 KOs) in the Colbert-Garcia co-feature at the Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Russell, brother of former WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr., brought the fight to the 38-year-old Postal. He rocked Postol in with 29 seconds left in the bout and referee Mike Ortega very quickly waved it off to preserve Russell’s KO streak. Postol complained about the stoppage.

“The performance speaks for itself,” said Russell. “You see (Postol) went the distance with Terence Crawford, and I just stopped him. I believe I’m ready for another step-up fight.”

Postol fought on Saturday with his wife and their twin five-year-old sons back home in Brovary, Ukraine in harm’s way with the Russian military invading the country.

  • Russell was winning, but xorruption to stop it to keep his KO record! Ortega is corrupt and should never ref again! POS!

  • The stoppage was bad. Postol clinched too many times for my taste. When I watch African-American (AA) fighters, I want to see outstanding offensive/defensive fluidity (win, lose or draw). I am not impressed with Antuanne Russell (A. Russell) because he is/has:

    1) Open to power counters.
    2) Lousy defensive rhythm.
    3) Lousy offensive rhythm.
    4) Off balanced.
    5) Ineffective jabs.
    6) Okay power punch sequences.
    7) Okay combination punch sequences.
    8) Not patient.
    9) Slightly less than okay foot movements.

It’s only a matter of time before an opponent (with pop) times A. Russell’s crude boxing style. For now, thanks but no thanks to A. Russell, but I am glad he has an opportunity to earn an income.

    • Agree entirely E-Man. He’s aggressive but has his limitations and is very definitely beatable.

    • You actually summed up everything I was thinking about Russell! I am NOT impressed with him! Could you imagine what a prime Danny Garcia would’ve done to him?! While I’m NOT going to go into the African American fighter stupidity you just dropped (ignorant Bro), I will say that he isn’t that good! Bet you weren’t thinking this when Crawford was kicking ass @40 right?!

    • Dude are you for real? Unbelievable how ignorant and corny some boxing fans can be! Briscoe, Braxton, Fletcher, Hagler I can go on and on about AA warriors. Color of skin doesn’t make the man great or mediocre or lacking cajones, it’s his heart and huevos that defines the man whether he’s black or brown or white so GTFOH with that ignorant gay shit your talking man!

    • Oooookay so when the boxer isn’t “African-American (AA) fighter” what do you want to see?

  • i agree with everybody else Ortega should be fined and suspended way way too early of a stoppage Russell was winning but he needs a jab defense and a straight left if he wants to win a world title although after seeing Taylor vs Cattrel earlier he doesnt need much lol

  • There’s no way Postol gets stopped if he wasn’t fretting whether his wife and twins we’re going to die during the invasion, or not. Sometimes Ukrainians have too much heart. He should have pulled out and tended to his family.

    • Why is he fighting and not in Ukraine protecting his family??? A few bucks is more important apparently.

      • Maybe he has no way to get there since the invasion started? Maybe he needed the money for this fight to pay to get him family out of there? Maybe his family lives somewhere rural or on the western part of the country? Maybe he knows that Putin wants Ukraine and doesn’t want to kill anyone he doesn’t have to. He plans on being their leader after this.

Nothing worse than people like you who judge others from the comfort of mommy’s basement.

    • You have to go back a long way but Gaspar was an exciting fighter-remember seeing him back when free fights were on twice a week.

  • Showtime sees their “KO artist” going the distance for the first time, ummm, better put a stop to that!

    • Yeah, I’m sure Showtime thinks that Russel is gonna make them millions of dollars just like his brother made for them…… Oh wait.

How’d this get 13 likes? Ignorance is the real pandemic.

  • I also thought as I watched it that it was an early stoppage, but better to stop it one punch too early than one punch too late! The ref is in the ring and has the best judgement on the fighter’s condition. Russell’s fighting style is crude and not sophisticated. Postol lacked the power to hurt Russell. My amateur opinion is that Russell won’t be able to overwhelm future fighters.

    • So why not stop ever fight the minute a guys legs buckle?

Hell, why even have the fight in the first place. Boxing needs to be canceled. We can’t having boxers hurting each other.

  • Postol used to be a very good well schooled fighter. But he’s about 8 years past his prime and hasn’t been very active since he first lost to Crawford.

He’s on his way to Ukraine now. Hopefully he and his family will remain safe.

Russell was gifted a tko victory. He would have won the decision and thats fine. Sometimes fights go the distance. Why the quick stoppage ref?

  • Postol was doing better than credited for and the stoppage very premature. Russell looks like a less polished Shawn Porter.

    • I agree with Bob. I actually thought Postal was in the fight and was landing punches that the announcers were not commenting on.It felt that the judges, announcers, and referee were seeing what they wanted to see. I actually had him winning 6 rounds to 3 at the time of the stoppage. I can understand where people may disagree but I feel there were many close rounds where Postal was landing one clean punch after another and making Russel miss. Yes Russel was coming on in the later rounds and I can see someone having him winning if they favored him in some of those early rounds. Postal is a 38 years old fighter with a low KO % with losses in his big fights. From my experience guys like him do not get the benefit of the doubt in close rounds and can be victims of premature stoppages at the first sign of trouble against someone that is being built. I also think he deserved better then he got in his decision loss to Ramirez.

  • The ref was out of line 29 seconds and he stops the fight ? Thats just wrong !

  • I watched that fight last night with Russell and Portal, and I think that the Referee shouldn’t have stop the fight, with 28 seconds left that was wrong he should have let it finished. Portal was going to loose he might have pulled it out!!

  • The fight was stopped prematurely postal still throwing punches and looked okay ridiculous

  • the fight should have not been stopped i had the fight even going into the 10th round russell nothing special good luck to postel he should be with his family he showed he can still box at 38 years
