Fenech: Mike will look after Roy

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Former three-time world champion Jeff Fenech is concerned that Mike Tyson will have too much power for Roy Jones Jr when they clash on September 12 in an eight round exhibition bout.

“Mike looks in good shape, and Roy is in good shape and I think it’s going to be hard for these guys to have an exhibition,” Fenech told Sporting News. “I think if one of them hits the other, it could be a war and we might have something unforeseen happen. I think poor Roy might feel the power of Mike Tyson.

He added, “Danny Green doesn’t punch at all like Mike Tyson. I guarantee that – I trained them both. I’d hate Roy to get hurt, but Mike just looks so powerful. And he looks so great at the moment. He looks as good as he’s ever looked. His chest is pumped, it’s great to see him. It’s great to see Roy train, but I’d hate for anyone to get hurt. I think Mike is a good enough person and he’ll look after Roy.”

  • Since this is an exhibition, it’s basically each guy looking after each other in a mini-sparring session. Let’s not go over board and say it’s an all-out war.

  • Fenech’s one-eyed, ‘he can do no wrong’ view of Tyson is getting boring.

  • Promoters and trainers are like used car salesman. Oil leak, what oil leak? That’s just sweat from all that horsepower. They’ll tell you anything you want to hear to sell you something. Mikes looks the best he’s ever looked? Really? Anyone who has any knowledge of boxing knows that is the furthest you could be from the truth. It’s a shame, everyday that passes boxing becomes more of a side show circus than the once great sport it really was.

  • Mike is not even in the best shape he could be in at his age. Judging from his appearance I don’t think he could do a fourth of the workouts he did with D’Amato and Rooney. Tyson is just like so many others affected by the Covid19 and looking for a way to kill time.

  • Duke: What are you doing? This is supposed to be an exhibition you understand, an exhibition!

  • Call it / label it what you want. They are both fighters and as a former competitive amateur fighter. I know this, once the very first good shot connects the instinct kicks in with “retaliate. With that said anything could happen. If Mike even lands a half assed shot to Roy’s well publicized china chin it could have a scary ending.

  • Tyson has been seen at a lot of MMA bouts – I’m afraid that if Roy hits him Tyson will revert to illegal tactics and try for an armbar or triangle. His dirty boxing skills are excellent and his grappling is underrated but it’s there for all to see V Botha. The winner should fight the winner of Cormier V Stipe – the winner of that v The Predator.

    • I would actually put money on Mike vs the predator in a straight boxing match. Love the predator but in a straight boxing match I’ll take Mike… mike vs any active real heavyweight… I’ll take the other boxer. Times up, but I appreciate the memories and the fear that you put on me as I sat on my couch.
